Comirnaty®  Pfizer/BioNTech COVID‐19 vaccine will be delivered by the National Cold Chain Service (NCCS) at temperature of +2 to +8 °C

Exposure of vaccine to direct sunlight and ultraviolet light must be avoided.

Initial orders will be predetermined and delivered to the nominated sites

Vials

• 2 mL type 1 glass preservative free multi‐dose vial (MDV)

• MDV has 0.45 mL liquid drug product

• 5 doses per vial after dilution

• Single tray holds 195 vials• 975 doses per tray

The US label requires the ‘Dilution time and date’ to be added at time of dilution while the EU label requires ‘Discard date/time’ to be included at time of dilution. Discard date/time will be required on both labels

Storage Options

• Vials should be stored in a ULTF between ‐80ºC and ‐60 ºC (‐112°F to   ‐76°F), protected from light and kept in the original packaging.

• Vials are stable for up to 6 months at ‐80ºC to ‐60ºC until the expiration date on the vial and tray (6 months after manufacture). 

2‐8°C

Vials are stable for up to 5 days (120 hours)at +2ºC to +8ºC.

At the point of fill during manufacturing an expiry date is assigned to the batch. This is the expiry date on the vial and is linked to the batch number

Storage at a temperature between+2 °C and +8 °C reduces the shelf life to 120 hours from the time of removal from ultra low freezer. Boxes delivered by NCCS will be labelled with a Use before date and time. This should be recorded in the patient record. 

After dilution in sodium chloride (0.9%) solution for injection the vial label requires Discard date and time to be recorded. This should be recorded in the session report form.

Vaccine should be administered immediately once drawn into a syringe. There is no stability data for vaccine once in a syringe.

• Vials should be kept upright both during storage and during refrigerated/ cool‐box  transportation. 

• Vials should be securely packed when transported.• If being transported outside of original trays, vials must be 

packaged securely to avoid breakage and to prevent vials from rolling during transport.

• An appropriate container should be used to minimize the potential for vials to be jostled. If vials are inadvertently bumped, they should be righted, however the risk to the product is minimal and vials which are temporarily knocked over may still be used. 

• A temperature monitoring device should be used (data logger with external display)

• Vials are glass and should be handled with care. Visual inspection prior to use should be carried out.

After Dilution: Use immediately, if not used immediately store at +2˚C to +25˚C. Discard any remaining quantity 6 Hours after dilution or at date and time shown on the USE BEFORE label, whichever is sooner.

Transportation Time Restrictions

The total or cumulative duration of transit of the undiluted product at 2 to 8 °C must not exceed 12 hours. The 12 hours cumulative time includes the travel time from NCCS to the site and each additional transportation step thereafter must be added. 

Diluted vaccine should not be transported for administration in another location

Requirements for Vaccination Session

• Ensure cool boxes are correctly conditioned and packed with appropriate number of ice/cool packs

• Ensure appropriate temperature recording devices are used• Secure the prepacked boxes in the coolbox to minimize the 

potential for vials to be jostled.• Ensure all ancillary supplies, education materials, and PILs /fact 

sheets required to administer the vaccine are also available.• Transport diluents with their corresponding vaccine (in separate 

containers due to unique storage requirements) so there are always equal amounts of vaccines and diluents for reconstitution. 

• Diluent storage and handling requirements should always be adhered to when transporting and redistributing.

Before sending the vaccine confirm the receiving point has the necessary ancillary supplies to support vaccine storage and administration.

Ensure the receiving point is staffed appropriately and able to administer the vaccine within the stability timeline.

Prior to redistribution and accounting for transport time, make sure there will be enough product stability time left for the receiving point to be able to administer the vaccine.

Clearly communicate with receiving points on exact time of vaccine delivery to ensure readiness.

Unopened vaccines, that been continuously maintained under cold chain conditions, can remain in a pharmaceutical fridge at the site until the next session (within use by date and time) 

If they are returned to the hospital hub following Residential Care Facility vaccination session they should be used as soon as possible e.g. in a pop up clinic in the hospital.

• If these are not used on return to the hospital, they should be marked and can be taken to a second vaccination session providing the transportation time from NCCS plus transportation time to and from previous day’s clinic, plus the transportation time to this clinic in total does not reach 12 hours
