Building on her long career of leadership, Bonnie Jo Wurzbacher served as Chief Development Officer for World Vision International from 2013-2017. With their holistic approach of long-term development, emergency relief and advocacy for the poor through 40,000 local staff members, WVI helps communities address the root causes of poverty in 100 nations. As a key member of WVI’s executive leadership team, Bonnie was responsible for the growth and stewardship of $2.8 billion in global revenue and represented WVI on the local boards of World Vision US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. She led a global team with responsibility for global fundraising strategy, child sponsorship and grants acquisition, as well as regional executive leadership across Europe and Asia.

Prior to her work at World Vision International, Bonnie enjoyed a 28-year career with The Coca-Cola Company, serving in various senior leadership roles including Corporate Vice President and Sr. Vice President, Global Customer & Channel Leadership. In this capacity she led the development of Coca-Cola’s global commercial strategy. Her career began as a schoolteacher in the Chicago area public school system from 1977-1982.

Bonnie’s extensive global leadership and her Christian faith provide a unique and practical perspective on the integration of faith and work, which she has shared nationally since 1998 when she spoke at a Wheaton College chapel service.

A second generation Wheatie, Bonnie was involved in WETN Radio and Jukebox Theater, and as a member of the Track and Field team. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor this past school year in the Business and Economics Department, she currently serves on the board of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics & Economics and the national board of CareNet, a Christian, pro (abundant) life organization in Washington D.C. She is co-leading the expansion of the WorkMatters Institute in Atlanta. Bonnie holds a B.A. from Wheaton College and an M.B.A. from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

Bonnie and her husband Steve love their large, growing, and extended family including their son, daughter-in-law and grandson. They have been members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia for over 30 years, where Bonnie has served as an elder, choir member, Bible study leader, and life calling coach.

Bonnie Jo Pruett Wurzbacher ’77

THE ACADEMIC COSTUME

The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. European institutions show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress, but American colleges and universities have followed a costume code adopted by the American Council on Education. The bachelor’s gown traditionally has pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is distinguished by its oblong sleeve. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bell-shaped sleeves. The velvet border of the hood indicates the type of degree conferred, such as navy blue for Ph.D., scarlet for Th.D. or other theology or divinity degrees, pink for music degrees, white for M.A. or other liberal arts degrees, purple for law degrees, light blue for Ed.D., etc. The colorful hood linings represent the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The length of the hood and the width of the trim are determined by the degree.

Rodney Sisco dedicated 34 years to serving Wheaton College through his commitment to unity within diversity across all facets of campus. After graduating in 1984, he worked in the Admissions Office before becoming the Director of the Office of Multicultural Development in 1988, where he served until his passing on December 30, 2018. As Director, Sisco led efforts to make Wheaton a more welcoming space for students of color, as well as to facilitate fruitful conversations between those who come from vastly different life experiences.

When Sisco was an undergraduate at Wheaton, students of color made up just over three percent of the student body. Now, about one-quarter of undergraduates are students of color. During his

service to Wheaton, he became an established mentor, father-figure, advocate, and spiritual counselor for countless students, regardless of ethnic background. He left a legacy of Christian compassion for those after him to follow. In addition to his leadership on campus, Sisco provided national leadership on diversity in Christian higher education. He served on the Racial Harmony Commission of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU); the Board of the National Christian Multicultural Student Leaders Conference Inc.; and on the Diversity Task Force of the Association of Christians in Student Development, which recognized him with its Jane Higa Award for Racial Harmony.

Philip Yancey is a bestselling author and speaker whose books, including The Jesus I Never Knew (Zondervan, 1995) and What’s So Amazing About Grace? (Zondervan, 1997), have sold over 15 million copies and been translated into 40 languages. He has received 13 Gold Medallion awards for his books. Yancey is known for his willingness to address hard questions about the Christian faith, and he is celebrated for his honesty and pursuit of truth in the face of doubt, grief, and suffering.

Although he does not seek fame, Yancey has received many opportunities to witness for Christ and His Kingdom. After graduating from the Wheaton College Graduate School with Highest

Honors in Missions in June 1972, Yancey worked as a journalist in the Greater Chicago Area. He served as editor of Campus Life for eight years and an editor-at-large with Christianity Today (CT) for three decades. At the same time, he wrote for numerous publications, including The Saturday Evening Post and Chicago Magazine. During his position at CT, Yancey wrote dozens of articles and a monthly, back-page column that lasted 36 years. As a journalist, he interviewed Jimmy Carter and covered stories of famous writers such as Annie Dillard and Henri Nouwen. Yancey and his wife Janet have also visited 87 countries and are committed to sharing their resources with the church abroad.

For 36 years, as a student, faculty member, dean, administrator, and parent, Dr. Gary Larson has been committed to furthering the mission of Wheaton College both in his own life and in the lives of others. He has served in a wide range of capacities, from Dean of Humanities and Theological Studies to Supervisor of Computing Services, and most recently retiring from his role as Director of Institutional Research and Academic Support in the Office of the Provost. As a faculty member at Wheaton, Dr. Larson taught in eight different departments, demonstrating his interdisciplinary prowess, and was appointed to be the first coordinator of the College’s Faith and Learning Program, newly funded and revised under former Provost Stanley Jones.

Dr. Larson earned a double B.A. in history and biblical studies from Crown College (St. Paul Bible College), after which he came to Wheaton to pursue a master’s in theological studies with a concentration in Old Testament and Semitics. After graduating from Wheaton in 1983, he completed a second M.A. in communication from Arizona State University (’84) and obtained a Ph.D. in computational linguistics from the University of Chicago (’93). Gifted in humanities, sciences, ministry, education, technology, and more, Dr. Larson embodies the value Wheaton places on the liberal arts in furthering God’s kingdom.
