Standard of Care

• The ASTM D2047 acts as the official

safety guidelines for commercial

businesses to follow when it comes to

their flooring, especially when

considering coatings.

• As a focus of these guidelines, coatings

must meet a slip resistant standard.

• Virtually all coatings available today

meet the standards set forth in the

ASTM D2047. However, it is wise to

always ask the supplier of your floor

care products for assurance.

Standards of Slip Resistance Company

LOGO

• It’s important to know that throughout the

ASTM D2047, uncoated walkways are not

officially defined.

• However, there are still bare walkways that

can meet the coated floor standard. This

can be determined by measuring bare

walkways with strict adherence to the

methodology set forth in the ASTM D2047.

• The three industries that need to adhere to

walking safety are the flooring, shoe, and

floor coating industries.

Flooring Coating Usage

• Floor coatings can add to the

life span of flooring, especially

materials that have poor

abrasion resistance.

• Floor coatings makes flooring

easier to maintain and clean.

• It also gives a favorable

aesthetic to the surface.

Measurement of

Self-Conducted Slip

• It’s not necessary to use portable slip

testers in order to gauge if a floor

meets slip resistance standards.

• Pedestrians generally do not fall

because of dry floors or floors that are

too waxed.

• Pedestrians typically fall due to wet

flooring or cluttered walkways.

• Portable slip tests are fairly expensive

and do little to actually demonstrate

the safety of the floor.

Keeping Walkways Free of

Foreign Materials

• Keep all walkways clean and hazard-free

from liquids, lubricants, hard surface

polishes, powders, debris, etc.

• Thoroughly clean areas where

contaminants are used or sold.

• Contaminants can be hard to detect and

contribute to over 50% of all slip and fall

accidents.

• Slip resistance standards do not apply to

walkways that are wet or contaminated.

Textured Flooring

• Textured and abrasive flooring

do not have a standard of

performance.

• Most textured and abrasive

flooring do not require coating.

• Textured flooring is typically

used sparingly in public.

Hazardous Conditions

• If a business is made aware of a situation that

causes the floor to be dangerous they should

fix the issue ASAP.

• Keeping a consistent level of maintenance on

the floor helps to ensure that the presence of

contaminants, clutter, debris, and other

dangers are significantly minimized.

• Training employees about the standards is

extremely important.

• Also, giving notice to pedestrians should be

practiced for everyone’s safety.

Walk-Off Matting

• Walk-off matting should be present

at the entrance of buildings.

• Matting should have the ability to

absorb a great deal of water,

especially for inclement weather.

• A walk-off mat will help prevent a

majority of that soil from going

beyond the entrance.
