Support the Youth!
Welcome to the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show Commercial Heifer Sale
We are proud to offer our first set of Commercial Heifers fed and raised by the youth of Nueces County. The exhibitors are offering a large selection of high quality open heifers for your cattle operation. These heifers are all breeding age and ready to be exposed to your herd sires.
We are excited and hopeful this will be the first of many NCJLS Commercial Heifer sales. This year we had 16 youth validate their Pen of 2 Commercial Heifers and participate in this year’s contest.
Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a sale lot of 2 Commercial Heifers and support the youth of Nueces County as they gain “real life” knowledge of feed-ing and raising heifers for a cow/calf operation.

Exhibitor Name: Matteson Kapa Grade: 12th
Club/Chapter: Tuloso Midway FFA School: Tuloso Midway High School
Matteson entered the Commercial Heifer Contest because he felt like this was a great opportunity to get his Grandpa, a commercial heifer rancher, more involved in his FFA project. Matteson has learned raising commercial heifers is very different from raising show heifers. Tagging and loading the heifers is a lot more challenging because they are not halter broke and you must try to guide them in the right direction. The Commercial Heifer Contest has also helped me improve on time management skill because it is not the only divi-sion I entered in the 2019 NCJLS.
Matteson is top 10% of his graduating class and he will graduate to further his education and obtain a degree in AgriBusiness/Accounting. In High School he is involved in many clubs and organizations where he holds four officer posi-tions.

Exhibitor Name: Colby Skoruppa Grade: 8th
Club/Chapter: Chaparral 4-H School: Tuloso Midway Middle School
Colby entered the Commercial Heifer Division because he had thought about raising a market steer, and thought this would be a good start. He believed he could learn a lot from this project to possibly use in a future pro-ject or cattle in general. Colby learned that it takes patience and time to get results from any live-stock projects. The heifers grew up differently. They went through a growth spurt and grew taller when they had been shorter and more filled out. So with more time he believes they would have grown and filled out much dif-ferently. He loves to go hunting and fishing and ride his dirt bike. Colby is also show-ing a market swine in the show this year.
