JCoaldescribedabout theplant safetymanagementespecially inthe O&M area.They alsooutlined aboutlegal frameworkof power plantsafety in Japanand the Standardprocedures and
practices in Japan withfocus on high-risk tasks and near-
miss incidents. EPRI outlined therecent development of materials foradvanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC)
coal-fired power plants. Uniperdescribed their efforts to improvecapacity, availability, reliability,flexibility, efficiency and cost as is mostappropriate to our own plants.
Going further CMD, NTPC shallinaugurate TECHNOLOGALAXY, anexhibition by power sector vendors on14th February followed by technicalsessions on Renewable Energy,Control & Instrumentation, ElectricalSystems, Operation &Commissioning, Steam Turbine andAuxiliaries, Energy Efficiency &Conservation, Hydro Generation, Fuel& ash management, Steam Generator& Auxiliarires, O&M Issues in PowerGeneration and Flexible operation. Inaddition to this there will be session foracademicians forpowergeneration. Tobring the eventful deliberation toanother successful close, technicalsession on 15th Feb will be ontechnological challenges in powerstations, Chemistry & EnvironmentManagement and WaterManagement.

India needs to understand their journeyand strategies to be adopted and here the IPS2018 will open the gateways to ongoingtechnology revolution in the arena of digitalisation

To commemorate theday, an International Operation & Maintenance(O&M) Conference is being conducted every yearin NTPC. Its aim is to reinforce our commitment tomake a difference on an organisational level andendeavour to capture contemporary challengesand future scenarios.
In the span of 36 years since the first unitsynchronisation, NTPC has emerged as a reputedpower utility not only in India but also onInternational power scenario. Accordingly, theConference has become a prestigious event andhas attracted participation from major powergenerators in India such as SEBs, DVC, Vedanta,Reliance Power, JSW Energy, Nabha Power,NLCLtd, RRVUN Ltd, THDC, BBMB, Sasan Power Ltdetc., and also from across the world such as USA,UK, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Germany,Russia etc.Equipment manufacturers and serviceproviders such as Toshiba, SKF, Ljungstrom,Doosan Power, Megger, Steag, EPRI, Black &Veatch, KSN Ventures etc. participate in a big way
to demonstrate the advances in power generationtechnology and latest systems being used forO&M of Power plants. This O&M Conference ofNTPC, ‘Indian Power Stations 2018’, shall be onestep in the direction of meeting the challenges ofstrict environmental norms, cyclic operation ofconventional generation, renewable integration ingrid, low load operation, coal mining & extractionetc. The design of proceedings of the conferenceshall also target to have interaction on relevantexperience with global fraternity and enrichknowledge base of every participant and thusbenefitting the whole power sector.
In this year’s conference, out of 103 papers, 18international papers are expected withrepresentations from USA, Australia, Japan,Germany, Italy, South Africa etc.Apart from foreign
companies, there will be around 36 papers fromIndian participants such as Doosan Power, JSWEnergy, Reliance Power, NLC Ltd, CEA, TERI,Vedanta etc. NTPC will be presenting about 49papers. It is because of this format of theconference that a platform is available to all stakeholders for knowledge sharing and fruitfuldiscussions. As a consequence, all participants,big and small share their views on contemporarysubjects for mutual benefit. It is expected that thetechnological challenges deliberated during theconference will throw light on the risk andopportunities in power generation.The conferencewill deliberate, share on various issues &challenges being faced and work out solutions andstrategies for generating the power with minimumcarbon foot print.

The global O&M event- IPS 2018 being organ-ised by NTPC from 13-15 February 2018
reflects the global focus on safety and sustain-ability, observed R K Singh, MoS (I/C), Power,New and Renewable Energy, while releasingthe e-compendium of proceedings of the confer-ence at IPS 2018, along with release of com-pendium of best practices and the SustainabilityReport of NTPC. Further, while presenting theBusiness Excellence Awards 2016-17 to variousNTPC units, Singh added that NTPC is todayrespected for its corporate size, unequivocalfocus on safety and strict adherence to globalbest practices. “Going forward- NTPC shouldideally grow into a India focused global major inpower generation business with a diversifiedenergy mix,” Singh emphasised.
