[email protected] after me: you don’t have to fol-low other people’s rules.According to the world, there are

immense list of ‘rules’ for being a woman. We’re all expected to pour time and effort into meeting certain beauty standards so we’re suitably aesthetic for those around us. We’re expected to magically figure out what side of the work/family balance our neighbors expect us to be on, which can change depending on who you talk to at any given moment. Worse, we’re expected to keep that balance effortlessly, without any regard to the fact that we have only so many hours in a day and could really use a little help. No matter how much we do, how much we give, the ‘rules’ are always asking more of women. We’re expected to be good, kind and gracious at all times, keep clean homes, make sure our kids have enough extracurricular activities, be nice to the neighbors, be involved in our communities and church groups and always stay skinny and so on and so on and so on…. No. Those are the world’s rules, not yours. And honestly, the world doesn’t know anything about you, and what you have to go through in a given day, and anyone who hasn’t been in your shoes really doesn’t have a right to decide whether you’re doing things “correctly” or not. Some days, the fact that you’re doing anything at all is enough of a reason to stand up and applaud yourself. You don’t have to live up to anyone else’s standards but your own. You’re the one who’s doing the job of living your life, which means you know better than anyone else what it takes to live it right. The world won’t give anything back to you for jumping through its hoops, so there’s really no reason to kill yourself trying to pull the trick off. No matter how loud they’re shouting at you, there’s nothing that says you have to go where they tell you to. I’m not saying that there aren’t things we do have to do, both as wom-en and people in general. We all have responsibilities, no matter what gender we are, and fulfilling those responsibili-

ties is what keeps the world moving. Whether it’s going to your job, calling your mom, eating slightly healthier than you did yesterday, or making sure your kids get fed and go to sleep at a reasonable hour, we’ve all got a to-do list that sometimes feels like it’s five miles long. But don’t let other people put things on the list that you don’t want to have on there. The church potluck will survive without you bring-ing anything, and if you feel guilty about not contributing something a bag of store-bought salad is just fine. If your kids have to make their own dinner for a few nights, the world won’t end. Neither will your husband, even though he might complain like he will. You don’t always have to be the one who stays and works those extra overtime hours at your job. You don’t have to dress the same way everyone else does. You get to decide what it means to be a good woman, and the only test that really matters is how you feel about yourself at the end of the day.

Women, write your own rules

Directional Non-Force Tech-nique is the original low force method of chiropractic that was developed by the late Dr. Richard VanRumpt (1904-1987). Often known by its acronym, DNFT, it is unique in conception and thought to be the fountainhead for many other low-force techniques today.

VanRumpt, while still a student at the National College of Chiro-practic in 1923, became interested in a different approach to struc-tural analysis and correction. He

Dr. Jerry Park and his wife, Mona Park, own and operate Park Chiropractic in Centerville. They utilize a low force method of chiropractic in their treatments.

initially found that the mere pressure of spinal palpation on his patients often resulted in unexpected structural, symptomatic and physiologic changes. He soon felt that a low force approach could not only be an alterna-tive to the more forceful methods taught in school, but might even surpass them in power and results.

Some examples of DNFT philosophy are: • The “Innate Intelligence” of the patient’s

body is capable of yielding the best diagnostic subluxation information. X-ray, manual pal-pation, thermographs, or biomechanic theory, although valuable for various purposes, are not considered to be the optimal methods for analyzing subluxations. This is obtained through use of the DNFT challenge and leg check.

• The body best and most permanently responds to a very specific, directional, low force, impulse style of corrective thrust, deliv-ered by the thumb.

• There is a sequence of correction of

subluxations, different on each visit, which constitute a process referred to as “retracing.” This means that the body is decompensating as the result of relieving of structural faults and associated nerve interference. After a relatively brief series of visits, most patients report enhanced long-term structural stability and health.

DNFT adjustments are comprehensive and include spine, pelvis, cranials, shoulder, upper and lower extremities, TMJ and organ reflexes. There are very few contraindica-tions for Directional Non-Force Technique chiropractic, and it may be safely applied to babies, geriatrics, post surgical patients and those who have disc herniations.

It has been a long-stated goal of the technique to effect maximum benefits in a minimal number of visits. This has made DNFT a very patient-oriented technique with features appreciated by many. There are almost no contraindications, and the effects are as powerful on a young child as a mature, well-developed athlete. Directional Non-Force Technique is a constantly evolving product, and presently represents over 70 years of clinical research and experience.

What is your "golf fitness handicap?" Most people know their regular golf handicap as a mea-sure of one’s golf ability. But what is your fitness

level in relation to the game? Now the two can be combined with a golf fitness evaluation that in-cludes 15 different tests that can make a difference in your health and in your game. Here’s how it works. Candidates are measured from head to toe and given a score based on the results. The score ranges from

0-36, just like the regular golf handicap system, giving you an idea of where you are on the fitness side of things. A 3-D “motion capture” system is also used to analyze the physical side of the golf swing in a hitting bay. You are then prescribed a home workout program designed to attack the deficiencies found in the fitness tests. After 4-6 weeks of performing the supervised program the candidate is then re-measured to quantify progress being made on the golf fitness side. Examples: Player A has a golf handicap of 8, and a golf fitness handicap of 22. This player will be better off working on the physical side of the game in order to drop their playing handicap. A golf spe-cific workout program will help them improve their overall game. Player B has a golf handicap of 22, and a fitness handicap of 8. While we still feel like a golf specific workout would be beneficial for performance improvements, this player may initially benefit from golf lessons from a PGA professional. How do you know if you need this program? Ask yourself if you have plateaued with your golf level. Is your playing handicap getting better or is it staying the same year after year? Whether you are trying to improve performance or manage a golf-specific injury, an opportunity to look at both your fitness level and golf game performance in a unique way, is available locally at Rhodes Physical Therapy, who recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art physical therapy clinic on Shepard Lane in Farmington, Utah. Dr. Jon Rhodes, DPT, is certified by the Titleist Performance In-stitute as a golf fitness and medical instructor. He works with many of the best golfers in the state, including the men's and women's golf teams at BYU.

“No one walks alone.” The phrase is written in bold letters on the bright pink page. It is a phrase with a double meaning. First, it means that all who participate in the annual Mak-ing Strides Against Breast Cancer will walk with a team – a team of family members, friends, co-workers and care-givers. Second, it promises that anyone who faces the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis will not face it alone, but with the support of survivors, the determined work of researchers and the coordination of doctors

to support them. There will be offers of rides to treatments and a place to stay in between those treatments, and there can be classes on make-up, support groups and personal health managers for those impacted. The American Cancer So-ciety sponsors an annual walk to raise funds for breast cancer research and services such as these, to ensure, again, that “no one walks alone.” This year’s 5k walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 15 at Lib-

erty Park, 900 South 500 East in Salt Lake City. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and walkers head out at 10 a.m. And they wear pink. Supporters have been work-ing since August to pull to-gether their teams and collect the donations necessary to ensure the work can continue. At a kick-off breakfast Aug. 24, people on all sides of the fight shared their stories. One had a mother who died of breast cancer, another had lost a grandmother. One had won her personal battle but at great cost, having had to fight the

disease alone. Yet another was a surgeon who wanted there to be a cure so she wouldn’t have to oper-ate to remove tumors again. Many at the breakfast had survived breast cancer themselves; others came to honor loved

ones lost to cancer. “We need to find a cure,” said Brandy Slagowski, a survivor and advocate. “We need to fight the fight that’s worth fighting even if we’re not always winning. We all have this precious gift of life – let’s lend whatever resources we have to end the cancer blight on our society.” Money raised during the walk will go not only to services for those fighting the cancer battle, but for research to improve treatments and find a cure.
