Committee on Dental Hygiene Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) Chapter 631: Committee members (NRS 631.205): The Committee members are appointed by the Board and consist of: The members of the Board of Dental Examiners of Nevada who are dental hygienists; and One dentist who is a member of the Board and who has supervised a dental hygienist for at least three years immediately preceding appointment to the Committee by the Board. Dental hygienists may not participate in the grading of licensing examinations of dentists. An unlicensed member of the Board shall not participate in grading any examinations required by the Board (NRS 631.130). Appointments of the members must represent geographic areas of the State (NRS 631.140). Powers and duties of the Committee: The Committee may: Make recommendations to the Board concerning the practice and licensing of dental hygiene; and Shall carry out the duties as assigned by the Board. Background Legislation: 1947, Senate Bill 7 (Chapter 161, Statutes of Nevada)—defines and regulates the practice of dental hygiene, placing it under the Board of Dental Examiners of Nevada; 1951, Assembly Bill 6 (Chapter 152, Statutes of Nevada)—known as the Nevada Dental Act, repeals all previous acts, makes various changes to the Board and the practice of dentistry; and 2003, A.B. 489 (Chapter 89, Statutes of Nevada)—created the Committee on Dental Hygiene and added a practicing dental hygienist to the Board of Dental Examiners of Nevada. A legislative history of A.B. 489 has been compiled and is available here: http://www.leg.state.nv.us/Division/Research/Library/LegHistory/LHs/2003/AB489,2003.pdf. According to the minutes of committees considering A.B. 489, proponents testified that the Nevada Dental Hygienists Association and the Board of Dental Examiners of Nevada had collaborated on developing the legislation. Proponents testified that dental hygienists sought a greater role in the regulatory process. They proposed that the Committee would research and provide recommendations for the practice of dental hygiene. Members: Listed on the Website and on the Review Form.
