As the Chair of the Legal Committee, I had asked David Ferguson to establish a committee to identify and research the legal issues and issues in general that seemed to impair progress at several of our An-nual General Meetings. I have asked for and received input from the membership regarding any issues that the members might have. I want to thank everyone for their input. The issues that the committee identified from their experiences and the input from the membership regarding the following:

NERYC was established in 1930 as a stock-issuing corpora-tion, then at some point, changed to a non-stock issuing cor-poration? What is the status of the original NERYC, Inc. stock certifi-cates? Do current members own a “share” in the assets of the Club? Did NERYC, Inc. give up valuable rights or real property for inadequate compensation in its arrangement with North East Harbour, LLC? Who owns NERC Docks, LLC? Does NERYC, Inc. have the right to lease slips, and collect slip fees, for slips it does not own? Did any member benefit financially from the construction of the docks and the agreement with North East Harbour, LLC? Does the “Life Membership” category jeopardize the Club’s tax-exempt status? The Committee has finished the first phase of their work to the overwhelming appreciation of the board. Please read the minutes of the June BOG meeting for the entire report. I again thank David Ferguson and his committee, George Bar-nard, Bob Brady, Mike Hamlin and Ann Osborne for the tremendous amount of work they have done to aid the mem-bership and the BOG in moving forward for the benefit of NERYC.

FROM THE VICE

It’s time for everyone to begin thinking about their donations for the Live Auction/Crab Feast being held August 29th. This is a chance for NERYC members to substantially contribute to the club by offer-ing their services for auction and a fun packed evening. As we all know, it is more fun having fun and being entertained than receiving an assess-ment notice in the mail. All of this plus a full menu of steamed crabs and other entrees for those afraid the crustaceans. This year we are asking both men and women to offer their “Honey-Do” service trying to eliminate the sexism with only the men doing the work. After all, we know the women usually have a part in the activity being auctioned. For those of you who have not participated in this event, we auction off services such as de-tailing cars, yard work, cooking meals, accounting services, com-puter services, legal work, sailing lessons, boating lessons, art lessons, photography/portraits, you got the idea now. Dressing the part for auction is suggested but not necessary. Please contact Ginny Somers at [email protected] advis-ing her of your donation. Their will be mystery auctioneer auc-tioning off your services, don’t miss this one!

FROM BUILDING & GROUNDS

I would like to thank the group of people who turned out on short notice to clean the carpet in the Commodore’s dining Room on Saturday, June 6th. The carpet is only a few years old, yet it was stained so badly, there had been talk of replacing it. A decision was made to rent carpet shampooers and clean it ourselves before further action was taken. Vivian Malloy, Nancy Tuttle, Steve Somers, Joan Brown, Joyce Hare, Darlene Hamlin, and April Conway participated in the cleaning. Once we developed a system, we made short work of it. In less than three hours the entire carpet was cleaned. We actually had fun doing it. Best of all, the carpet looks great. There is a lot of life left in that carpet. We did it a fraction of the cost of hiring somebody, and it’s a better quality job. This may become a regularly scheduled work day event. Next up is the carpet in the Burgee Lounge. This is another example of the greatness of our membership. Regardless of the task to be done, there is always somebody who will step up and help get it done.

2009 CRUISE SCHEDULE

Fireworks Dock Party July 3 NERYC Mid Summer July 18,19 Crescent Y/C Labor Day Sept 5-7 Kent Island Y/C Frostbite Oct 10,11 Sassafras Harbor Marina

CRUISE DESCRIPTIONS AND DETAILS CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.NERYC.COM

July is here and the boating season is in full swing. Last months 2nd annual "Fleet Pass and Review" was a HUGHE success with good company, good food, and a few water fights enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Doug Cain for all his time and hard work putting this event together to make it one of the best at-tended gatherings of the year. On July 18th, the fleet will travel once again to the Middle River to visit the Crescent Yacht Club for our mid-summer cruise. Please start your preparations to attend by e-mailing me your intent to attend, when you plan to arrive and depart CYC, the number of per-sons attending, and your boat information. Once I receive this information, I will make slip reservations for everyone. Since CYC is a reciprocal club, fees will be $20 per night plus electric. Remember that on Saturday afternoon at aprox. 1600, we have our famous "Fleet Captains Happy Hour". Everyone should bring some type of delectable appetizer to be shared by all as well as $8 per person, or $15 per couple to help cover the liquid refreshments. The Officer of the Day,(OOD), program continues to strug-gle along with only a few volunteers signing up. As you are all aware, the restaurant is no longer open for lunch,(a decision I fully supported), so this means that there will be no one around to open the club in the mornings. This will of course necessitate some changes in the OOD protocol. I will notify you of these changes as they occur. My thanks to those members who have already served as an OOD and to those who are already signed up for future dates. If you are signed up for a future day, please contact me prior to going down to the club on your assigned day so I can let you know the latest procedure. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions. See you at the club, and at Crescent Y/C.

FROM THE FLEET

Hello members, a rainy June is behind us so there should be plenty of sunny sailing & motoring for the remainder of the season. Frank Wile, Mike Wagner and plenty of supporting members have been working hard to build a new dockmaster shed so the old shed can be used for the sail program. Take a walk behind the clubhouse to see all the great work they have done. Just a friendly reminder as we slowly turn into the second half of the season. Transient fees for non-slipholders are on an honor system and apply after your sixth “free” nights are used up. This applies to both slips and the attenuator walls. If you are planning to stay overnight I would appreciate an e-mail to [email protected] saying we plan to stay our 4th of 6 nights in slip xx (as an exemple). After your 6th free night please see my-self, the OOD, or any of the office staff to settle up your fee of $15 per night plus electric We have a few repairs to make that people have brought to my attention and the dock crew will attend to these in the month of July. Any issues, please bring them to my attention. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of the season, the weekends really fly by.

FROM THE DOCKS

Hello everyone, my past month has been swell. This weekend I went to the final Open-ing Day ceremonies of our sister clubs; all in all I attended 18 openings around the Bay escorted by our wonderful officers and past commodores and would like to thank them all for driving me all over Maryland so that I could represent our wonderful club. Its summer time now and I’m ready for the rain to stop, it’s not April any more, and the rain isn’t suppose to still be coming down. Other than it being really rainy, I’m out of school, so that means I’m a sophomore now. I’m excited for tenth grade but not ready to go back to school yet as summer has just really started. My family and I took a vacation down to the beach with the Hughes and the Leigh’s and we stayed at Roger and Linda’s beautiful condo on the beach in Ocean City, MD. We had a wonderful time and I enjoyed myself very much. I just started working as a counselor with our summer sailing camps here at the club. So far, it’s a blast. It’s a good thing because I am saving up for a car as next month, I will be getting my learner’s permit, and I’m pretty excited about that. Your little princess is starting to drive so watch out! Other than that I’m taking my summer one-step at a time. Trying to keep myself out of trouble and just enjoy my life. See you out on our beautiful waterfront for the July 3rd Dock Party & Fireworks!

A ‘Motley Crew’ reunion?.......No sorry it’s just the Blofish Crew

Wow Again! July 4th is upon us and the summer is in full gear. Registration is open for our next big event, the NERYC Invitational Race which is sched-uled for Saturday July 25th. Last year we had a great race with great sponsors, a great turnout, and a great party. This year we are hard at work again and expect to bring you another exceptional event. New for 2009! Corinthian class start (see class require-ments opposite). This is a new PHRF cruising spinnaker class for those that don’t have the ‘go fast’ boats but who want to race with the option to use a spinnaker. Online registration is now available at CBYRA.ORG regatta registration with payment by credit card, or at NERYC.COM with payment by check. For those who do not favor using the online registration, paper entries may still be sub-mitted by downloading an entry form see details on the website. Use the shortcut to link to our website to register and find out how all you need to know about the event: http://www.neryc.com/pages/sail_race_invitational.htm NERYC members, make sure your mark your calendars so that you don’t miss the best party on the Upper Bay. The party STARTS AT 5PM AND is open to all. non-racers are encouraged to support the event. We ask that you please sign up to attend. The Thursday evening races began June 11th and having been at sailing camp all week, I was around to watch the 2nd race on June 25th. It was great to see so many boats, both big and small, out having fun on a warm summer’s evening. Thursday races are relaxed, informal and a great place to learn. The dinghy fleet does not need to register, if you would like to use a club laser of Sunfish to race just let me know in advance. Races start at 6:45pm Please register online or contact Greg Eckman at [email protected] for more information. We had 4 boats go down compete at Northern Bay Race Week in Middle River this past weekend. Dailey Tipton and his Blofish crew did us proud by securing PHRF A with a win overall, Nigel Veater and his Therapy crew pulled in worthy 3rd in PHRF N overall, and Lottery and First Love who were competing with limited crew, let's just say, we enjoyed the practice. Next down the Bay events for racers: EYC Solomon’s Invitational Delivery Race, July 17th and SMSA Screwpile Regatta, July 19-21st, and Gover-nors Cup on July 31st. I encourage you to consider gathering up a crew and taking part in some of these events. They are tough, but a great learning experience, but above all they are fun. If you are interested in crewing for any of these away events let me know and I will try and hook you up with a skipper. Summer Sailing Camps are underway and the club is a hive of activity during the week. With a lot of sweat and hard work on Mike Wagner’s behalf, we have finally got our newly acquired sail shed ship shape and our equipment so organized that it brings tears of joy to my eyes. (Mike you are the best!) The kids have been having a great time learning to sail. How do we know this? Well one, because we have such great instructors, and two because some have already signed up for a 2nd & 3rd session. Please note that the summer camp sessions are almost fully subscribed. At this time we have 170 registrations spread over seven weekly sessions. The following weeks have limited spaces open: July 6th and 20th so this is literally your last chance to get them in. Register online at www.neryc.com.

FROM THE RACE COURSE

Enjoy the fireworks and club activities. We will see you all at the Invitational unless you are venturing down the Bay to race.

PHRF CORINTHIAN Cruising Class

The purpose of these requirements is to establish a set of rules for true “dual purpose boats” oriented to racing and cruising with family and friends. It is the responsibility of the skipper to ensure that their boat meets both the letter and the intent of these rules in a Corinthian manner. 1. Boats must have a design date no newer than 4 years prior to the date of the competition. 2. The number of crew allowed is limited to the number of fixed berths on the boat. Children under the age of 14 are not counted towards the crew limit. 3. No more than two Group 2 or Group 3 sailors are allowed and no Group 2 or Group 3 sailor is allowed to helm except in an emergency or unless they are at least a 50% owner of the boat. 4. Sail material is limited to kevlar, dacron, mylar and nylon. No carbon or Cuban fibers are allowed. There is no material restriction for storm sails. No Code 0 sails are allowed. 5. Boats are limited to one new sail per year. Storm sails do not count towards this restriction. 6. The boats must be wet sailed with conventional bottom paint applied. Haul outs are limited to two per year. Bottom cleaning by diving is allowed within the spirit of the rule. 7. All normally installed equipment including doors, tables, stoves, head equipment, floorboards, cushions, etc. must be carried in their normal position while sailing. 8. Boats must have an upwind Sail Area to displacement less than 24.0 and a downwind Sail Area to Displacement less than 65. 9. Boats must have a valid PHRF of the Chesapeake handicap. This may be converted to a TCF (Time Correction Factor) and used to calculate a corrected time using a time-on-time formula when sailing in the PHRF Cruising Class unless otherwise noted in the Sailing Instructions. When sailing in “pursuit” type races (where the handicap allowance is taken before the start), PHRF time-on-distance scoring will be used. 10. The #1 pennant shall be the official class flag.

Remember that our photo contest for the 2010 birthday cards is coming this fall. Any photo taken in 2009 that represents NERYC and its spirit can become the front of the card that all members receive for their birthdays. Submissions will be made in September and voted upon by the entire membership in November. So keep looking for that one great photo of NERYC! Speaking of birthday and anniversary cards, I would like to thank Laura Reynolds for addressing and mailing the cards every month. It is a big job some months, so THREE CHEERS for Laura! Any questions, comments about membership or offers to help please give me a call. 320 383 5595. See you on August 1st.

Linda and Steve Constable of Downingtown, PA recently moved here from Michigan. They shipped a 36 foot powerboat from their Club on the Great Lakes to NERYC. They are just learning about the Bay and plan to venture farther down the Bay soon. Sam and Tina Romero of Riverside Dr., North East live just up the hill from the Club. They bring a 30 foot power boat to our marina. They enjoy cruising the Bay on the weekends. Please say hello and get to know them! Welcome Aboard to the Constable and the Romero families. The New Member/ Past commodores dinner will be held on August 1. As well as honoring our past commodores, this is your opportunity to welcome the members who joined NERYC in the past year and get to know them. The cost is $34.95 which includes music for dancing. Please come and join our new members for a fun evening.! The Board of Governors (BOG) approved the change of ini-tiation fee from $550 to $200 for new members. The initia-tion fee is waived for any new member who rents a slip in our marina. In addition, our dues are prorated as the year goes on, so if someone should join now in July the cost is $200 initiation fee plus $300 dues for a total of $500. What a deal that is! Additionally any current member who sponsors a new member will receive a $100 gift certificate to our restau-rant. (Please sign as sponsor at the back of the application.) Members cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and served water-melon, chips and beverages to our campers and parents at the end of the first week of our junior sail camp. Many thanks to Susan Woron who helped prepare the food, Larry LeMasters who served the hungry masses, Judy LeMasters who greeted the new folks and John Hakeimian who worked the hot grill. Kay Brawley who with John volunteered for the week to help at the camp made folks feel comfortable and welcome. Thanks to all! It was wonderful to see so many happy kids and their parents. Everyone seemed to have had a great week on the water at NERYC. We will again meet and greet and serve up food this Thursday, July 2nd. Jeff Allen and Jared Wolegmuth are still taking pictures for a member pictorial directory. Please send your photos either digitally through e-mail or by regular mail to Jeff Allen. [email protected], 104 River Bend Park, Lancaster, PA 17602. We would like to complete this project soon. so please send in those photos! Also if you have any photos of the Pirate Pass and Review and Party please send them to Jeff. He says his digital camera does not like muddy water!

Dear Members and Family, The North East River Yacht Club has been a signifi-cant supporter of the American Cancer Society's Re-lay By The Bay since Relay came to North East 5 years ago. Our team, Cruising For A Cure, has been one of the top fundraisers all 4 years. Josie Dallas and Claudia Ferguson co-captain this year's team and are looking for your support once again. Relay By The Bay will be held September !8th and !9th in the North East Park so it's time to get our team together to raise money. Last year we raised over $10,000. Josie and Claudia have raised over $500.00 already but we need your help. For those of you who are not familiar with Relay, it is the American Cancer Society's main fundraising ac-tivity. The money is used for research, education as well as helping to support folks with cancer and their families. It is a fun- filled overnight (not mandatory) event that celebrates cancer survivors while remem-bering those we have lost. Many camp overnight, some of us walk all night, others come to watch the opening ceremony or participate in the very moving luminary ceremony. But we all come to enjoy the entertainment that comes with Relay. Cruising For A Cure serves fresh omelets as the sun rises over the North East River to make Relay By The Bay extra special. This is how you can support Cruising For A Cure, our NERYC team. Join by going to www.relaybythebay.org and press "join a team". Look for Cruising For A Cure. Registration is free until the end of May. Each team member is asked to raise, donate, or help to raise $100.00. You can just DONATE!!! We, once again, have raffle tickets for a trip to the beautiful Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn in Puerto Rico. These tickets went fast last year. Only 100 are sold at $25.00 each so call
