The Long Island Single Sailor’s Association .. Our 28th Year Dedicated to Sailing and Boating Vol. 29 No. 10 October 2016 God Bless America Commodore’s Corner Howard Marks So here we have another October, another col- orful reminder that the seasons fly by before we know it. Like it or not, it’s time for a sweater and a windbreaker. There’s still time to enjoy what re- mains of the sailing season, if any of you still even think of sailing anymore. The quire may indeed be gone. Gone or not, we can still look forward to the land. But the fall and winter has always been the time for a hot cup of sailor’s grog, on a cold day, in front of the fireplace, a pot belly stove or your fa- vorite warm fuzzy place around town or in the country, when the leaves start to fall. There’s nev- er a season with nothing to look forward to. In October we have a Planning Meeting, a Hap- py Hour, a Birthday Babies and a Halloween Party. The Planning Meeting is always important. Ideas have thinned out and so, these meetings are be- coming more important for the club’s future. No ideas, no club. The Happy Hour details are in the Coming About News. The Birthday Babies this month is at The Vil- lage Lanterne in Lindenhurst, on Thursday, Octo- ber 20th, in the heart of the Long Island fall sea- son. This is a great place for a good German meal. There will also be an Oktoberfest Band, with music for our knee-slapping enjoyment. This is fabulous. Hosted by Terry and Will you WILL be there, ja!! (See more details in the Jib.) Our Halloween Party will be at Nocello’s on Thursday, October 27 th and will be our LISSA so- cial for the month. To be in the spirit of the sea- son, we ask that you come in costume. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could be a fancy hat, or a mask, a fake mustache or a sheet. But we ask that you join us in the spirit of the evening. Irv and Jo- se, as usual, will offer 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place prizes for best costumes. It’s always a fun night. Be there and be scary. (See flyer) The Annual Meeting will be at Nocello’s on Sunday, November 13 th starting at 1 PM. After a brief Planning Meeting the LISSA Elections will be held. After the elections, Irv and Jose will serve the food. It’ll be light fare finger-food and then, cof- fee and cake… simple and easy for us; no lugging food and no clean-up. Amazing. Cash bar. CABARET: 2:00 PM Matinee on Sunday, No- vember 20 th at The 5 Towns College Performing Arts Center in Dix Hill. Most of us will remember this delightful, kind of raunchy, meaty movie star- ring Lisa Minnelli and Joel Grey. It’s a great play and the 5 Towns Theater group should do it jus- tice. Your host is Ralph Guastaferro who, if enough people call, will organize a pre-show din- ner at the diner. Ticket cost is only $15.00 for sen- iors. You will need to call the theater and make your own arrangement. As usual, a show like this will sell out so, don’t wait until the last day to grab your tickets. (See flyer) The Change of Watch will be on Saturday, Jan- uary 21 st , from 7-11 PM at the Smithtown Landing Country Club. The cost will be $70.00 pp, minus your deposit, of course. Guests will be $80.00 pp. DJ Rick C will be providing the music all night long. Please note: Seating will be 8 per table. If you want to sit with a specific group of people, please make sure you organize this with your host, Billy Vassel. Don’t wait until the last few days to contact him because after a certain point, he will make ta- bles arbitrarily. We ask for your cooperation in this regard. Please look for the flyer in the next Jib and in a separate email later this month.

Thanks to George Fuchs for arranging the dinner cruise on the Moon Chaser. Although postponed from the week before because of the hurricane that wasn’t, the weather on the following Sunday was superb. Thanks to Fran and Jack of the Blue Angel Band who honored their commitment to all even though they were married on the day before the cruise. Their band was fantastic as always …..Carol The Birthday Babies at The Oar, in Patchogue, host-ed by yours truly, was a rousing suc-cess. The calamari was very good, the steaks were tender and the salmon cooked to perfection. The ser-

vice was also good, if a bit on the slow side, but the ba-bies seem to have enjoyed the evening, chat-ting gregariously amongst themselves all night. I was seated at the head of the table, being entertained by Maryanne's stream of non stop, Energizer Bun-ny, verbiage. The dinner, I admit, was a little on the ex-pensive side, but that didn't seem to dampen the vibes. Ed O'Hagan was particularly thankful and vowed to be there next year, if I were to do it again. We were seated in the back room adjacent to the dock. Twenty Two people were there and, unless there were rumblings I'm not aware of, it was ALL GOOD!! ...Howard Marks
