E-mail

• Short for electronic mail, the transmission of messages over communications network.

• The messages can be notes entered from the keyboard or electronic files stored on disk. Most mainframes, minicomputers, and computer networks have an e-mail system.

Wiki

• It is a Web site that allows users to add and update content on the site using their own Web browser.

• This is made possible by Wiki software that runs on the Web server. Wikis end up being created mainly by a collaborative effort of the site visitors.

• A great example of a large wiki is the Wikipedia, a free encyclopaedia in many languages that anyone can edit. The term "wiki" comes from the Hawaiian phrase, "wiki wiki," which means "super-fast."

Social Bookmarking

• It is tagging a website and saving it for later. Instead of saving them to your web browser, you are saving them to the web. And, because your bookmarks are online, you can easily share them with friends.

Html

• Short for Hypertext Markup Language, the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web.

• HTML is similar to SGML, although it is not a strict subset.• HTML defines the structure and layout of a Web document by using a variety

of tags and attributes.

Podcast

• It is a digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, pdf, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.

• The word is a neologism and portmanteau derived from "broadcast" and "pod" from the success of the iPod, as audio podcasts are often listened to on portable media players.

VoIP

• VoIP is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over computer networks like the Internet. VoIP converts analog voice signals into digital data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations using Internet Protocol.

• VoIP calls can be made on the Internet using a VoIP service provider and standard computer audio systems.

Online Chat

• Online chat may refer to any kind of communication over the Internet that offers a real-time transmission of text messages from sender to receiver.

• Chat messages are generally short in order to enable other participants to respond quickly.

• Thereby, a feeling similar to a spoken conversation is created, which distinguishes chatting from other text-based online communication forms such as Internet forums and email.

WWW (world wide web)

• Collection of internet resources (such as FTP, telnet, usenet), hyperlinked text, audio, and video files, and remote sites that can be accessed and searched by browsers based on standards such as HTTP and TCP/IP.

• Also called the web, it was created in 1989 by the UK physicist Tim Berners-Lee while working at the European Particle Physics Laboratory (called CERN after its French initials Conseil Europeen de Reserches Nucleaires) in Switzerland, as an easier way to access information scattered across the internet.

URL

• URL refers to a Uniform Resource Locator, an internet address. • It is used as an address for classifying where documents can be found on the

Internet.• URL's define the Internet file or facility and it is what web browsers use to initiate a

connection.

Streaming

• Data streaming, commonly seen in the forms of audio and video streaming, is when a multimedia file can be played back without being completely downloaded first.

• Most files, like shareware and software updates that you download off the Internet, are not streaming data. However, certain audio and video files like Real Audio and QuickTime documents can be streaming files, meaning you can watch a video or listen to a sound.

Blog

• (n.) Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author.

• (v.) To author a Web log.

Social Networking

• Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one's business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals.

• While social networking has gone on almost as long as societies themselves have existed, the unparalleled potential of the Internet to promote such connections is only now being fully recognized and exploited, through Web-based groups established for that purpose.

Webfeed

• It is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an aggregator.

• A web feed is also sometimes referred to as a syndicated feed
