Tasting the foods ofA Bite of China《
Mysterious bird's nest soupI did not really like birds' nests either,
and always wanted to tell my Chinesefriends that, cooked in chicken broth as theyinvariably were, vermicelli tasted much thesame and cost considerably less, but since Ionly ate them in their homes, courtesy keptme silent. Certainly, they were prized fortheir properties, and were eaten hopefully bysome as an aphrodisiac. Boiled with sugarthey were considered a sovereign remedy fora sore throat, and often sent as such to mybedside.
When I saw the caves whence the bulkof nests came, I wondered how anyone hadever thought of trying them as an article offood... In thick swampy jungles, many milesfrom the Borneo coast, concealed behindsmall fissures and holes in sudden limestonerocks and cliffs, reached by climbing upwooden ladders, by crawling down subterra-nean passages and water-courses, the greatvaulting caves must have been hard to find, forbidding to explore. Would a lost man, starving in a cave, have thought of eating thenest, rather than the bird? And if he had,how would he have reached it? But there itis: Chinese for generations have paid fantasti-cally high prices for them, though exactlywhen they acquired the taste, I do not know.
-- Avril Mackenzie-Grieves

Hailing from Sweden, "plogging"is a fitness craze that sees participantspick up plastic litter while jogging --adding a virtuous, environmentally driv-en element to the sport.
The appeal of plogging is its sim-plicity (all you need is running gear anda bin bag), and the feeling of getting fitwhile supporting a good cause. By add-ing regular squats (to pick up junk) andcarrying weight to jogging, we can as-sume the health benefits are increased.
Plog-
