A combination of Communication Aid using symbols or text, an On-Screen Keyboard for controlling other Windows software, and a Teaching Aid to provide point and click access to literacy learning grids.

The Grid 2 software combines symbol communication, text communication, and on-screen

keyboards in a single program. Highly configurable access options for switch users and a range of communication vocabularies completes the package. The Grid 2 builds on those features, seamlessly integrating new activities (such as playing music and sending e-mails) and you can get started straight away with the new, user-friendly interface.

In addition to communication, The Grid 2 also has built-in computing functionality accessible without leaving the confines of The Grid 2 program. The Grid 2 uses a Workspace to display a sentence bar for speaking, or the Workspace can display any of these computing functions. Grid 2 users now have the option of using the 'computer' functions of their communication aid without the complexity of Windows

applications.

Symbol Communication The Grid 2 is a powerful symbol communicator, used by people of all ages and abilities who are unable to speak, or whose speech is unclear.

At a basic level, users can select a message to be spoken instantly. You can also select a sequence of symbols to create a sentence. More advanced users can

combine symbols with alphabet grids, and use tools such as prediction with symbols. Symbol sentences can be saved, printed, sent as email or sms messages, or simply spoken aloud.

You can quickly and simply add new vocabulary and new pages.

Use the SymbolStix symbols from News-2-You or Widget Literacy Symbols (both are included), or use digital pictures that can be easily captured without worrying about an elaborate storage scheme.

Text Communication The Grid 2 provides many ways to speed up text input for people unable to use a physical keyboard. Prediction and other tools are available for users who need support with language or spelling:

• Intelligent prediction learns as you write.

• You can use “sounds like” or "spelled like" word matching.

• Create abbreviations for typing useful phrases in just a few selections.

Text communication grids are included with The Grid 2, and can be adapted to suit individual needs.

Text Chat + Messages gives users the option to save sentences. Quick searching allows you to find and edit saved messages. Power users can maintain multiple message lists for different topics. Verb Morphology allows you to change a verb to a different tense just by selecting a cell.

Computer Control Our computer control grids are designed to make all the features of Windows immediately accessible to people who do not use a standard keyboard and mouse - even to people using a single switch.

In addition to replacing the keyboard and mouse with an on-screen display, The Grid 2 allows you to open and manage programs, move and resize windows, browse web sites and much more.

The Grid 2's computer control grids are set up for common applications like Word, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express. Grids for controlling other software can be created in The Grid 2 and shared online. Accessing other programs is very fast with The Grid 2. This high speed is due to the efficient way you control your computer. Each cell on the screen can be programmed to perform any number of functions, allowing users to perform complex tasks by simply selecting one cell.

Beeline

A grid set for The Grid 2 by

Beeline is a symbol-based, single word vocabulary designed for users with relatively good

language skills.

Beeline offers a large, single word or short

common phrase vocabulary with a view to

generating novel sentences. The majority of the

high frequency core vocabulary is accessed by one

or two selections with a maximum of three

selections for the majority of words. Beeline

follows a rigid structure that makes it relatively

easy to locate and add new words.

The consistent layout is designed to help the user

generate sentences through motor planning.

Theories of motor planning and automaticity have

been applied to the creation of Beeline.

CALLtalk


CALLtalk was designed primarily for school children,

but can also be used by adults when adapted and

personalized.

CALLtalk is more complex than a ‘beginner’

vocabulary and goes beyond basic functional

communication. Users need to understand topic

categorization and should be starting to put two or

more words together. It is for direct touch screen

users as well as switch scanners.

CALLtalk users

Primary school students with reasonably good educational potential (mainstream and/or

special settings) following 5-14 or National Curriculum or IEPs.

Relatively cognitively and language able children aspiring to acquire at least some degree

of literacy – i.e. for whom ‘talking’ and writing in sentences could be a realistic goal.

Users frustrated by limited vocabularies.

Chatterbox


Chatterbox is a great grid set for eye gaze

users, or those with small handheld devices like

PapooTouch. With many communication grid

sets, as the number of cells per grid is reduced,

the amount you can say is also reduced.

However, there are a large number of people

who require fewer cells due to access issues,

but who still have a lot to say. Chatterbox

breaks the mold, with over 3,000 unique words

but just 24 cells per grid.

Chatterbox has many innovative features,

including the use of The Grid 2's next-word

prediction on the front page, which makes it

very fast to generate sentences. The front

page has links to core vocabulary, for

immediate access, such as small words,

pronouns and common verbs.

Additional Vocabulary

Additional vocabulary is available on the Vocab page. The

word categories are very intuitive, and are based on topics

rather than alphabetical indexing, which reduces the

literacy requirement.

Keyboard with Prediction

Chatterbox uses an innovative keyboard with prediction,

which allows common letters to be accessed in one hit,

and less common letters in two hits. Using this layout, it is

possible to fit a full keyboard on the screen without losing

typing speed.

GridTalk


GridTalk has been designed for users with emerging literacy. It requires the user to know the

first letter of words that are not on the front page, and uses symbols to aid word finding.

Core Vocabulary

Language studies have shown that we use the same few words

(core vocabulary) in almost everything we say. GridTalk has

the core vocabulary on the first page for immediate access.

People - I, me, my, you, etc.

Small words - a, and, at, etc.

Verbs - am, are, be, etc.

Common - yes, no, +s (plural)

Word groups

Selecting a word group, such as days, displays the word group

words in the cells at the bottom of the page.

Additional Vocabulary

For finding the words that are not in our core vocabulary,

GridTalk has additional vocabulary arranged alphabetically.

Select a letter from the right-hand side of the front page to

display a list of words starting with that letter.

Symbols are included to aid word finding. These word lists

provide access to the top 2,000 words that we use in everyday

speech. The word lists in The Grid 2 are easy to edit, so you can quickly add or remove words.

Verb morphology

Select a verb and alternate forms of the verb are displayed to help you complete the sentence.

Keyboard with prediction

Type a letter to start prediction. Predicted words are displayed with symbols to aid word finding,

and the "sounds like" button will allow users to find words they are not sure how to spell.

GridTalk includes grids for e-mail and text messages, browsing the internet, Skype, and ECU.

Ingfield Dynamic Vocabularies


Ingfield Dynamic Vocabularies (IDV) is a topic-based system that place all the

necessary elements of a sentence on one page. This makes IDV a quick and easy way

to create complete sentences.

IDV is organized in four levels, from A to D. As you go up through the levels, the

number of cells on each page increases, allowing more vocabulary to be included on

each page. Higher levels also include more

topics and sub-topics. The layout of the grids

is designed to allow easy progression from

one level to the next.

Grids can be customized or extended as

much as required.

Key Series

Grid sets for The Grid 2 by

Key 48

Key 48 is a new vocabulary for young adults with basic literacy skills and moderate access

difficulties. Key 48 supports a range of users including those who prefer direct access.

Word prediction in the eye line is the most useful

place for many people. Switch users are also

supported by the arrangement of the letter board

with vowels on the first column.

For those who would prefer it there is a very large

picture supported vocabulary arranged topically

rather than grammatically. The scroll feature that

is unique to Grid 2 means that words within a topic

are not confined to the 48 cells on a page and the

user can add more words to the topic list to suit

their individual needs.

Finally, there is a comprehensive set of subject pages that are arranged to serve the

mainstream or special school curriculum. These pages also contain vocabulary that can be

useful generally. For example, every major country and all U.S. states, counties, and cities

can be made readily available on the geography pages.

Key 6

Key 6 has been developed for the teenager/young adult who has at least some basic

literacy skills but significant difficulty with access. The layout suits those who:

can use a fist point to accurately select one out of six options

can be accurate with linear scan using one or two switches

can select one out of six options using an eye gaze tracking device

Key 6 and Key 48 were developed by Marion

Stanton. Marion is a special needs teacher and AAC

consultant. She works for Communication and

Learning Enterprises (CANDLE) who specialize in

curriculum and communication. They are based in

Yorkshire and provide advice to families, schools,

colleges and education authorities across the U.K.

Seashell Speak and Sign


Seashell Speak and Sign is a British Sign Language (BSL) vocabulary which uses

videos of sign language alongside speech. It allows the user to access over 1,000 different signs.

Seashell was designed for a group of deaf teenagers who have cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. Seashell could also be used by non-signing people to

communicate in basic sign language or to learn signs.

Star Talker


Star Talker 2 promotes effective text communication in many useful ways.

Quick Talking

Start typing in Star Talker 2, and predicted words are displayed on the left. Once you have

written your sentence, just hit speak to read it aloud (or you can get Star Talker 2 to speak

automatically when you finish a sentence). The prediction learns as you write, so the words you

use often will appear at the top of the list. There is also next-word prediction to suggest words

that might follow on from what you have written.

Save Common Messages

At the heart of Star Talker 2 are the "chat messages", a list of messages saved for quick retrieval. If you have written a message that will be useful later, just hit "add" to

add it to your message list. When it comes to finding it later, simply start typing one of the words in the message. Any messages that include the word you write are displayed, helping you to find them very quickly.

Star Talker 2 includes eight message lists, of varying topics (such as "personal" or

"shopping") so you can easily organize your messages.

Always in touch

Star Talker 2 also includes grids for e-mail and text messaging, and grids for using

Skype. Whether out-and-about or at home, Star Talker 2 keeps you in touch with your

friends and family.

Star Talker 2 also includes a web browser, calculator, music player, and word processor,
