Communication Maps: Goals Enunciate the full range of groups and
communication options Show which groups are no longer active or are
under the radar Understand what information is public and what
is not, and make sure that is in-line with intentions Understand what communication is formal and
what is not Have a way to track how information patterns
change

Ins & outsIns & outs
Ins If they were interested,
they’d figure out how to get in.
Outs If they needed people,
they’d make it easier to get in.
It’s so easy to get involved! It’s so hard to get involved!
This is so much work - how can we get more help?
That looks like so much work - I don’t think I have enough time/energy to help.
Key communication happens in informal channels or based on ‘inherent’ knowledge.
Rely on formal communication channels because they don’t have the ‘inherent’ knowledge or informal access.
Impasse = Stagnation
We’re so friendly - why don’t they want to participate?
They’re so close - why would they want more people to get involved?
It’s Ok, even liberal, democratic, egalitarian, tolerant, compassionate groups have them.
ConsiderationsConsiderations
Is the current level of Ins and Outs acceptable? To some degree, the dichotomy will always exist, but you can question and evolve it.
Are there groups that need more members?
Are there groups which are full? How is that expressed without alienating people from the entire community?
Assumption: Expansion
Assumption: Expansion
We are looking for more attendees.
We are looking for more members.
We are looking for more involved members and attendees.
