Biking by Phil McDonald

October 31 marks the end of the “official” cycling season. The 2018 season featured a variety of local, state, and even an international ride. Certainly the highlight of 2018 was the trip to Croatia in May and June when 8 PPOTHG members enjoyed a week of cycling in the hills and mountains of this beautiful nation. PPOTHG cyclists also enjoyed rides in Denver, Pueblo, Summit County, Leadville, Fort Collins, Castle Rock, and Aspen. Each ride was characterized by a great turnout of riders and generally terrific weather. An end of year party will be held to reminisce about good times past and plan for the future.

The current cycling roster includes over 50 members. If you are listed on the roster, but are no longer interested in riding, please notify me and I will remove your name from the roster. If you are in not included on the roster and wish to join our rides, please let me know that as well.

Organized cycling activities will resume in May. Hope to hear from you before then!

Special Events by Felicia Marino Many thanks to the members who have participated in the special events to date:

We traveled to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, in August, to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit where we were treated to a wonderful afternoon learning the history of the discovery and seeing many wonderful artifacts. Afterwards, we enjoyed dinner at Pappadeaux Restaurant.

In September, we attended an olive oil and balsamic tasting class at the Venice Olive Oil Company, located here in Colorado Springs, learning how to use the oils and vinegars and then sampling from over 50 flavors. We are now enjoying cooking with new flavors!

Be certain to check out pictures from these events on the PPOTHG website! Also see pictures of the month later in the newsletter.

Mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

Sunday, October 21 – attend a Travelogue with presentations from a group of our members who biked thru Croatia and also hear from a member who traveled to Ethiopia. The Travelogue is being held at the AAA office located at 7330 North Academy Boulevard beginning at 2pm. Doors will open at 1:45pm. Bring a dessert to share and you may bring wine for personal consumption. Soft drinks will be provided. Seating is limited to 50 people and the deadline to RSVP your attendance is October 17. There is no charge for this event.

Tuesday, November 27 – we will travel, again, to Denver to see the Blossoms of Light exhibit at Denver Botanic Gardens. We need a minimum of 15 persons to commit to this event. Tickets are $12-14, depending on your age. Please RSVP your definite attendance by October 28 so a reservation can be made and tickets will be purchased for the 5pm entry time. Once the event has been reserved, you will need to forward your payment and there will be no refunds for cancellation. We are looking into chartering a bus for transportation – this is dependent on the number of members who commit to this event.

Thursday, December 13 – take a break from your Christmas holiday shopping and socializing and attend the 1pm matinee play - A Mountain Holiday - at the Butte Theater in Cripple Creek. We need a minimum of 12 persons to commit to this event. Tickets are $18-21, depending on your age. Please RSVP your definite attendance by October 28 so a reservation can be made and tickets purchased. Once the event has been reserved, you will need to forward your payment and there will be no refunds for cancellation.

Looking forward to 2019 – plans are underway to spend a January afternoon at an Escape Room and to have a Mardi Gras party/dance in February.

If you are interested in any of the upcoming events, contact PPOTHG’s Special Events Coordinator, Felicia Marino, at [email protected] or 306-5842 to make your reservation.

Skiing by Rick Olson

Ski Bus 2019 That chill in the air is a signal that winter and the ski season are on the way. If you are a down hiller or a Nordic center enthusiast you should consider the Ski Bus. We are a diverse group who board the bus once a week starting in January for a relaxing ride to one of the nearby ski resorts. We gather at the Safeway / Pizza Hut parking lot in Old Colorado City, leaving at 6:30 AM.We stop in Fairplay for a short break, a great place to put on your boots before continuing to our destination. We depart the mountain at 3:30 PM for a return, with a stop in Fairplay. Depending on weather and our final destination we will return to the Safeway lot about 6:30 or 7:00 PM. All of the trips follow 24 through Woodland Park and Divide. If you would prefer to board the bus there, let me know and we can arrange for the bus to stop.

We have finalized arrangements with Fort Carson and they will provide a 40 seat “ski bus” again this winter. We will follow a schedule similar to last season, including twelve trips, starting with a single trip to Monarch and concluding with a trip to Breckenridge and Copper. We will have one trip a week including six trips to Breckenridge, with five of these trips continuing to Copper. In addition, there will be five trips to Keystone / Arapahoe Basin.

We will also visit a Nordic center on eleven of the trips for those who prefer cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or one of the other Nordic center activities. Depending on interest, we will stop at the Breckenridge, Frisco or Keystone Nordic center. Each of these locations has a web site and offer equipment rental.

You will find the schedule / signup sheet on the web site, which also includes a number of recommendations if you have not been on the bus before. If you have ridden with us before you should double check the “rules” to insure everything goes smoothly.

Registration is currently open to members and will open to non-members and guests on Nov 23, when the price per trip increases to $30. If I receive your registration before Nov 23, the price is $25 per trip. If you have any questions, send me an email.

Pickleball by Dan Akerhielm

ATTENTION PICKLEBALLERS! We have regular weekly play organized with about 20 players. Whether you are an experienced 4.0 or just want to give it a try come on out and join the fun. We have extra paddles and can get you started. We specialize in friendly play (mostly) and I guarantee you will get a great workout and still have a smile on your face. Right now we are playing on Mondays, 4 pm to 6 pm, at the Monument Valley courts near the swimming pool. I maintain an email list with weekly reminders and info; let me know if you want to be added to the list. We will adjust the play time as the seasons permit and there is no play in rain or snow.
