Members & Guests

On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to report that the Club’s trading performance continues to improve when compared to 2010 results.

That is, for the 10 month period ended 30th April, 2011, the club has returned a net loss of $380,822 representing an operating improvement of $209,125 when compared to $589,947 in 2010. I would like to recognize that in April, 2011 the club also paid non-recurrent costs of approximately $75,000 in the form of a redundancy payment which further highlights the clubs improved trading performance. The Board is particularly pleased with the ongoing recovery in revenues up over $500,000 when compared to last year. The club’s financial position is considered sound with accumulated cash reserves of $781,725 as at 30th April, 2011.

The Board intends to further complete over the next 6 months necessary Building Code of Australia (BCA) capital upgrade works at Club Forster in accordance with agreed timeframes with Great Lakes Council. The estimated cost to complete the remaining scope of works is in the vicinity of $200,000 in order to bring Club Forster building into total BCA conformity.

The Board have also been active in their professional development by recently

attending workshops on risk management, Board and CEO’s conduct, ethics, charter and the law, and in July will be attending a seminar titled Driving Financial Performance.

I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the Ladies and Men’s Bowling Clubs on their recent performance and achievements during the pennant season. In particular, the Men’s 7A and 7B’s who both won their respective divisions in the 7th grade and played recently at Taree which was won by the 7A’s. The Board’s best wishes go with the 7A’s as they progress to the zone playoffs and hopefully will compete at State level.

I wish to advise that new lunch and dinner time menus have recently been introduced at both clubs, offering something for everyone at a terrific price. I encourage you to refer elsewhere in this magazine for more details on great daily meal deals.

I would like to wish the FT Hawks much success with their upcoming 90th Anniversary dinner and celebrations. I encourage all rugby league supporters to join them in celebrating 90 years of football in Forster Tuncurry by attending the dinner to be held at Club Forster on Saturday 25th June, 2011.

I thank you all for your continued loyalty and support of our two great clubs – Club Forster and Sporties Tuncurry and look forward to meeting or catching up with you during your next visit.

ALLAN LAIRDPRESIDENT

Welcome to the Winter edition of our Communicator magazine.

With the colder weather arriving it is a great time to get together with family and friends to enjoy some of the sensational meal

specials that are on offer at both clubs.

For example why not try our new set price menu for lunch and dinner at Club Forster, or the great themed dinner specials at the Sporties Tuncurry on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays - all of which represent great value!

There are many other lunch and dinner specials for you to choose from, so please reference the contents of this magazine for more detail.

Also I would like to draw your attention to the myriad of great entertainment activities coming up at both clubs for your enjoyment.

These include the very talented Marty Rhone and Sheena Crouch with their highly acclaimed Tribute to Cliff Richard & Dusty Springfield, the return of Australia’s greatest country star, Lee Kernaghan, then a real coup for the club - direct from Ireland, don’t miss Mary Duff In Concert with Straalan McCallum.

For those baby boomers who enjoy the music and fun of the sixties, you have to catch the British 60’s Show in August, and finally we welcome back the legendary John Williamson to the stage in September.

I know you’ll agree that Club Forster presents only the finest Australian and International stars in the Galaxy Room, and there are some very big names already planned to appear later on this year. Also may I remind you that you can now conveniently book tickets to most shows by visiting our great new website at www.clubforster.com.au. Also both the Sporties Tuncurry and Club Forster are both on Facebook, so please pay a visit, become a follower, and keep in touch with the latest.

One of the many great benefits of being a member is the chance to win each month $10,000 in our X-Factor Cash Giveaway. If your name is 1st out of the draw you will win $2,000, but if you are present we will increase the prize by the X-Factor of 5 to $10,000.

It does not get better than this!

For extra chances to win, all you have to do is simply spend $5 or more on either food, beverage, entertainment – or even by renewing your membership for your extra chances to win $10,000. The more you spend, the more chances you have to win!The next draw is Sunday 26th June, 2011 after the raffle. For more details I refer you to page 14 of this magazine.

Don’t forget, our Sports Club at Tuncurry offers regular Friday, Saturday and Sunday entertainment in conjunction with regular raffles, promotions and tasty bistro meals at affordable prices.

Members, don’t forget that you do have to redeem all your Dolphin Reward Loyalty bonus points and prizes before the 30th June, 2011. You may like to redeem your points on a range of things like meat packs, chips, chocolate nuts, enjoy a tasty meal in either of the club’s brassieres or even a nice bottle of white or red wine by contacting our friendly reception staff.

Also, members are reminded that they may only swipe their own membership card and are required to produce their membership card upon entry, or purchasing meals or refreshments in order to receive and enjoy discounts at both clubs. Members found swiping other members cards may face suspension.

I would like to conclude by thanking you, the members, for your loyalty and support of our two great clubs and I look forward to seeing you very soon during your next visit to Club Forster and Sporties Tuncurry.

ATTENTION MEMBERS & GUESTSI would like to inform you of the possible repercussions on Club Forster’s and Sporties Tuncurry of Julia Gillard’s Federal Labor minority government’s decision to introduce poker machine reforms.

What is the government going to do?Introduce a mandatory pre-commitment system by 2014 and restrict $250 daily withdrawal limit from Club’s ATM’s and Pubs.

What is a mandatory Pre-commitment System? It is a system that requires every poker machine player to posses a card containing their personal details which would be linked to a National grid covering every single venue across Australia allowing every bet placed by a poker machine player to be tracked by the Federal Government. Players are required to set binding limits on their expenditure, and if that limit is reached, then you will be compulsorily prevented from playing a poker machine - probably for 24 hours at anyone of the 5,700 clubs and pubs across the country, as well as casinos. Also, you will be prevented from withdrawing more than $250 a day of your own money from Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs).

Will it help reduce problem gambling? The Federal Government has been given plenty of evidence that it will not help problem gamblers.Australia’s leading academic on problem gambling, Prof Alex Blaszczynski, advised a Parliamentary committee that pre-commitment is unlikely to have a impact on the majority of problem gamblers, and may even exacerbate problem gambling.

Why is the Federal Government doing this?Because the Gillard Federal Labour Party was forced to make a deal with Andrew Wilkie, Member for Denison in Tasmania, for them to form a minority government.

What should the Government do?Clubs and Pubs want a targeted, sensible, effective and affordable approach to further reduce problem gambling, which has been achieved with the rates dropping from 0.8% in 2006 to 0.4% in 2008.

But more needs to be done like:• Increase in funding for face to face counseling, local support groups and 24 hour niihelpline to help those that really need it – the problem gambler• Further staff training to assist patrons with a problem• Not allow credit betting• Tighten regulation and control over unmanaged online or internet gambling avenues• Introduce a venue-based voluntary pre-commitment system that is affordable and nimay be used by those that really need it• Continue to conduct national research in the area of problem gambling and niundertake surveys to establish the incidents of problem gambling within Australia

Page 9: Communicator Winter 2011

What impact will these poker machine reforms have on Club Forster andSporties Tuncurry? One of Australia’s most reputable accounting firms KPMG has conducted a study which show that in NSW alone a 30% drop in revenue will occur resulting in more than 11,500 job losses, a loss of $820 million from the NSW Economy and force the closure of many clubs. Our club could not even afford the $3 million cost to retrofit its 200 poker machines so that the mandatory Pre-commitment System could be introduced and implemented.

Applying the KPMG findings, Club Forster and Sporties Tuncurry would potentially lose$4 million in revenue, and if that happened the club would probably be forced to close its doors.

In other words:150 Jobs lostLoss of two valuable community assetsLoss of over $120,000 in local support for sport, education, not for profit community organizations and other flow-on effects, and much, much more.

This is a ‘life or death issue’ so DON’T sit back and let it happen!

What you can do?Tell the Government that these outrageous, unreasonable and unacceptable poker machine reforms should not happen and that they should adopt the above mentioned initiatives and others.

A Message from Debbie Knowler:The state of the art, modern facilities available at Club Forster belies what people traditionally think of as a “club venue”. One of the main comments that I always hear, is that our guests “really can’t believe this is in a club!!”

We have two function rooms at Club Forster - the Wallis Lake Room & the Terrace Room.

The Wallis Lake Room is purpose built for receptions with an inbuilt backdrop and interior designed colour scheme so you don’t have to do much in the way of decorations to make this room look special. This room comfortably holds up to 140 people.

The Terrace Room is our other main venue at Club Forster. It holds up to 70 people and with its full French doors and huge balcony overlooking Forster golf course it’s the perfect location for your smaller, more intimate reception. The Terrace is also a great area to have hors d’ouvres & drinks on arrival while waiting for the bridal party to arrive.

For those of you having an outdoor wedding ceremony why not consider using our beautiful balcony - we do the setup for you with the red carpet and chairs plus a little “grotto style” feature as a backdrop. Why not make it easier for both you and your guests and have your whole event in one spot.

The Sporties Tuncurry Function Room is ideal for those of you like a more easy and relaxed ‘country club’ feel. With 2 sides as windows, this room has a lovely outlook over the bowling greens & native bushland. It will also comfortably hold up to 130 people.

With the menu specially designed and overseen by our Executive Chef, we guarantee that whether you choose Club Forster or Sporties Tuncurry this will be a day you will never forget.

Why not check out our club’s website - www.clubforster.com.au -simply go to the Functions page to see details and photos of the rooms, and while you’re there, you’ll find a link to my ‘Club Forster Weddings and Events’ page on Facebook.

Looking forward to meeting with you,

Debbie KnowlerFunctions Coordinator Club Forster & Sporties Tuncurry

LEE KERNAGHANSaturday 16th July

Showtime: 8.00pm Tickets: Adults $47.50 • Children $27.50Groups of 10 or more: only $44.50 each • Tix at Reception or online

Lee Kernaghan has dominated the charts with successive hit albums, including Outback Club, Three Chain Road, 1959, Hat Town, Electric Rodeo, The New Bush and Planet Country. Lee has made a huge impact on country music in Australia, creating a new musical landscape. He has sold over one million albums, won 27 Golden Guitars and three Aria Awards, and had 26 no.1 hits and ten hit albums. To many people, Lee represents the spirit and values of contemporary rural Australia. His love of the Australian way of life features in his music, and he is a passionate supporter of Australia’s rural culture. 2010 saw Lee travel the length and breadth of Australia on his Planet Country Tour and 2011 will see Lee back out on the road on his new Pubs Clubs & Carparks Tour.

His shows at Club Forster are always a sell-out, so it’s suggested to book early to avoid disappointment!

MARY DUFF IN CONCERTWednesday 4th AugustShowtime 8pm

Show: 8.00pm Tickets: Members $49 • Non Members $59 • Child $25Available at Reception or buy tickets online at www.clubforster.com.au

Direct from Ireland, Mary Duff’s phenomenal talent as a singer, together with the great stage presence and charisma she possesses, is testimony of her quietly powerful and captivating persona. There is a genuine warmth about this lady that touches all who come into contact with her, and she enjoys a dedicated, very supportive worldwide fan following.

Mary is seen in the music business as an accomplished, polished, and highly respected professional performer.

The start of 2011 saw Mary travel to America with The Daniel O’Donnell Show to perform at the Ryman Auditorium - ‘The Grand Ole Opry’, and follow in the footsteps of so many great country artists over many years.

On her latest tour of Australia, Mary will be supported by one of Australia’s finest new talents and the youngest person to be signed by Sony Music Australia, Straalen McCallum.

This young Australian talent is only 12 years old and is already making huge waves in a jaded industry where ripples are commonplace.

In June 2010, Straalen had an audience of over53,000 fans entranced as he sang the Australian national anthem at Suncorp Stadium, with a global audience of millions looking on, in what was the most viewed rugby league State of Origin game in history.

The British 60’s Show is presented by 4 men who were actually there in the 60’s and actually played music in the 60’s. They demonstrate the immaculate dress of the era and understand that the volume control
