Opportunities May Still Exist To Sign Up For Insurance

Right now there are a lot of unknowns regarding the Affordable Care Act

with the new administration – but what we do know, is that having health coverage is currently still the law and Ohio’s unin-sured rate is 6%. Open Enrollment 4 (OE4) through the Af-fordable Care Act ended January 31, 2017; however, Navigators continue to be avail-able for those with a qualifying event who need health care coverage. There are many “qualifying events”, but the most com-mon are: aging off a parent’s plan; getting divorced/married; losing employer spon-sored coverage; and being over income for Medicaid. Enrollment assistance by a Navigator for both Marketplace and Medicaid coverage allows for individualized health coverage education and exploration of options. Ap-proximately 55% of Ohioans have employ-er sponsored health coverage, which leaves

an estimated 5,130,000 to obtain coverage through other means. The Ohio Association of Foodbanks and its network of strategic consortium mem-bers, which includes Toledo/Lucas County CareNet, was awarded a federal Naviga-tor grant by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the fall of 2016. This $1.7 million grant allows the statewide consortium to provide Navigator services throughout Ohio, educating consumers about affordable health care coverage op-tions and helping them to enroll in plans available through the federally-facilitated Health Insurance Marketplace. CareNet focuses on serving consumers in: Lucas, Wood, Hancock, Hardin, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Van Wert, Mercer, Fulton, Henry, Putnam, Allen, Auglaize, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, Wyandot, Crawford, Richland, Hu-ron and Erie counties. If a provider is in-terested in having a navigator at their facil-ity or would like information for patients, please contact Julie Grasson at 419-842-0800 or [email protected]. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-800-648-1176 or visiting https://www.getcoveredamerica.org/get-covered-connector-national/.

Medical Equipment and Supplies Abroad

MESA is a Rotary District 6600 subcommittee for International

Service through the Supply of Used Medical Equipment to Rotary Clubs of the World for distribution to local clin-ics, regional hospitals and deserving public health centers.

Recently a survey in Tegucigalpa, Hon-duras with four local Rotary Clubs revealed many broken down pieces of equipment, a lack of sterilizers and many basic emergency room supplies. Many disabled people were crawling to see their doctor. MESA arranged to ship two containers of used equipment to the Rotary Clubs. Distribution was supervised by local doctors. Getting four Rotary clubs to cooperate in dis-tribution and the costs was a tall order. Feedback on this exercise can be viewed on Facebook MESA - rotary district 6600's international service project.

There is a limited opportunity for par-ticipants in a hands-on activity in Janu-ary of 2018 in the Merendon mountains of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Contact Rotarian Bob Ruehl the Traveler at 419-233-3343 for contributions of equip-ment, discards of clothing or to partici-pate.

MESA- Satisfaction guaranteed for over 33 years of service to mankind. Work with Us. We are easy.
