ʻService to the Communityʼ. Musical items were played by students from the Academy as a tribute to the late Philip Marshall, who was Head of Music at de Ferrers from 1971-2000. The guest speaker was paralympic ath- lete Dan Hopwood, who is a world champion paraca- noeist and also completed a 2,341- mile canoe expedi- tion down the Mississippi River, raising £11,000 for charity. Dan gave an inspirational speech and presented the stu- dents with their awards. The past Autumn Term has been incredibly busy and it is hard to believe that Christmas and 2013 is nearly upon us. As always, the months since September have seen many successes. Perhaps the highlight was Double Helix appearing at the Royal Albert Hall in November and supported by nearly one hundred par- ents, staff and students. Our first Academy Awards Evening held on 7th December at St Georgeʼs Park was a fantastic evening with an inspira- tional speech by Dan Hopwood. As we near the end of 2012, on a sad note we have to say farewell to Mrs Hulcoop, who has decided to retire after eighteen years of service to The de Ferrers High School, Specialist Technology College and now Academy. Mrs Hulcoop has simply been a wonderful teacher and colleague and will be greatly missed by all. We wish her a rewarding retire- ment. Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a fulfilling New Year. MY TIME AT THE DE FERRERSACADEMYThe day I arrived at the deFerrers Academy, I knew I would have a lot of funand the good thing is, I am having a lot of fun. I am enjoying all the sub-jects, as all the teachersare very friendly andalways willing to help. All the teachers make surethat we are having no trou-ble at all while doing ourwork and if so, then theyhelp us very nicely. On myfirst day at the Academy, Ifound it very difficult tofind my way as theAcademy is huge, but atthe end with the help ofthe teachers, I found myway at last.I think the food choice in thedining hall is fantasticbecause the foods arehealthy and made with greatcare. Most of all I really likethe choices of clubs in theAcademy. There are allsorts of clubs, you just haveto find your hobby. I like thereading club best so I alwaysgo there. I think we get theaccurate amount of home-work and at least a week todo it which is just correct. The Academy is perfect andin my opinion The de FerrersAcademy is the best schoolin the world!

The dinners are reallynice. You get things likefish and chips, pizza, jacket potatoes andstuff like that. There areloads of opportunities atde Ferrers for differentclubs and activities. There is a reasonableamount of homework atde Ferrers. The teach-ers usually give you atleast a week for you tocomplete your home-work.

THE DE FERRERSMOCADEMYOne score and fifteen days ago, our mo-fathers brought forth to this Academy a newnotion, conceived in charity, and dedicatedto the proposition of improving awarenessabout men's health. 'Movember' works tochange established habits and attitudes menhave about their health, to educate menabout the health risks they face, and to acton that knowledge, thereby increasing thechances of early detection, diagnosis andeffective treatment.Sixteen staff membersgrew moustaches duringthe month of 'Movember' toraise money for prostatecancer and cancerresearch. It was a difficult time facingthe ridicule of colleagues, and the dismay of our stu-dents. But solace wasfound in the brotherhoodthat developed out of acommon cause and vigor-ous discussion concerningmale grooming. On November the 30th aproud group of men, sport-ing a variety of moustachesof differing shapes andsizes, stood together forthe last time before the callof the razor blade finallyoverpowered them.

At the time of writing wehave managed to raisealmost £450, with studentsthemselves donating £76worth of vivos! Via themoustache, Movemberaims to fulfil its vision ofhaving an everlastingimpact on the face ofmenʼs health, by continuingto spark conversation andspread awareness of menʼshealth. Already we haveheard of other staff wantingto join next year, with plansafoot for a 'trucker' or evena 'caretaker'. Well done tothose who suffered eatinga Krispy Kreme doughnutand finding hundreds andthousands in their mous-tache afterwards, and ahuge thank you to those ofyou who have donated.
