OUR MISSION

Mt. Evans Home Health & Hospice provides com-passionate in-home medical, hospice and commu-nity support services for mountain area residents.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Mt. Evans,

2010 was a year of great change, and, thanks to you, Mt. Evans Home Health & Hospice thrived! We were thrilled when the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce named us Nonprofit of the Year.

Even in a year of great achievement, however, we have grappled with government cuts and lower reimbursement rates, and smaller agencies like ours are finding it more difficult to survive. We are so grateful to you, our supporters, for empowering Mt. Evans to continue providing excellent, compassionate care to mountain area residents.

Despite the economic downturn, we had a successful Winter Gala, with the theme of Gold Fever. Although the 2010 Freedom Run felt like a day in Seattle, an abundance of runners braved the wet cold to support Mt. Evans. We had another record-breaking year of public support at $583,124 (including donations and a United Way allocation), and continue to be one of Evergreen’s largest employers with 55 employees on staff. Our 500+ volunteer list grew as these crucial members of our team provided us with significant cost savings as well as priceless service to our patients and staff.

We are tremendously grateful to all the donors and grantors that helped us to grow Mt. Evans in 2010, and even gave us the ability to add new support groups that are free to the community. We are always seeking new channels for spreading the word about our services, and continue finding ways to work smarter with the resources we have.

More growth and innovation is under way—stay tuned to Mt. Evans in 2011!

Dear Mountain Area Ambassadors and Partners,

2010 was a year of transitions and growth. With the evolution in healthcare affecting providers, Mt. Evans had to step back and redesign itself, in order to ensure that quality and caring home health and hospice services remain available for our mountain area communities.

Strong leadership is vital to achieve our mission, and Executive Director Kathy Engel has the vision, compassion and heart to reach this vital goal. She has created an open environment that supports kindness and caring. This has produced a new culture focused on a team approach in which mutual respect and support are reflected in our patient care.

As part of the redesign, we re-evaluated the management of the business side of Mt. Evans. With better business practices and case management procedures in place, the budget has gained some breathing room. We must control the business side, while fulfilling our mission of providing compassionate professional home care for all patients in need, no matter their income.

During this time of change, Mt. Evans has also launched an outreach program, and consequently referrals are up 13 percent; we have 33 percent more engaged volunteers; and the number of donors has increased by 53 percent. Our number of grants has grown as well.

However, numbers only tell half the story. It’s the dedicated staff, caring volunteers and generous donors—steered by the committed board—who together fulfill our call to provide expert care to sick, disabled and terminally ill individuals in the comfort of their own homes.

The photograph “Bugling Bull Elk–Evergreen” by Betty Holling garnered the most community votes to grace the cover of Mt. Evans’ Home Health & Hospice’s 2011 “Seasons of our Mountains” Calendar. The calendars went on sale in fall 2010 and sold out.

The annual Mt. Evans Angel is a special way to remem-ber or recognize family and friends. Donors can have their honorees inscribed on a Tree of Angels star and listed in an online Book of Angels. They can also pur-chase keepsake angels created by Mt. Evans volunteers.

In 2010, the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce honored Mt. Evans Home Health & Hospice with its award for 2009 Nonprofit of the Year. Board President Rodney Hock and Senior Director of Community Relations Sallie Wandling accepted the award. Hock was also recognized as a nominee for Volunteer of the Year.

Littlest racer wins big atFreedom Run

Not only was 2-year-old Rhoan Alexander one of the youngest people to participate in Mt. Evans’ July 4 Freedom Run in 2010, she also brought in the most pledge donations! Rhoan walked the 5K race in memory of her grandfather, Richard White, who lost a long battle with lung cancer on May 9, 2010. For the first time ever, Mt. Evans accepted pledge donations for the Freedom Run in addition to race registration fees, offering the top ten pledge-gather-ers prizes. Rhoan, who chose to walk the entire 5K course rather than ride in her stroller, gathered $230 in pledges from friends and family nationwide.

In 2010, Mt. Evans provided a total of 14,722 medical visits to 758 patients in our four-county service area. Mt. Evans’ average daily census was 103 patients, ranging in age from one month to 99 years. Some were recuperat-ing from an illness or injury, some were coping with a chronic disease, and some had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and desired end-of-life care. For patients needing an inpatient facility or 24-hour nursing care, Mt. Evans provides hospice care at the Life Care Center of Evergreen. In 2010, 39 of our patients were cared for in this skilled nursing facility. Twenty-four were cared for at the assisted-living facilities of Elk Run and Grandma’s Mountain Home.

Mt. Evans’ field staff includes 14 registered nurses, 8 certified nursing assistants, 4 physical therapists, 2 oc-cupational therapists, a speech therapist, a dietitian, 4 social workers and counselors, and 2 chaplains. We also employ 24 full-time and part-time office staff who work in administrative or support positions. All staff and volunteers have had their professional licenses verified. Their criminal records, driving records, and professional references have been checked, and they are bonded and insured. Mt. Evans is proud to attract caring, committed, talented staff. Our low turnover rate enhances quality of care by providing patients with staff who are reliable, knowledgeable and dedicated. Providing continuing education opportunities for our staff and volunteers is a priority. In 2010, staff attended monthly inservices and teleconferences and completed verification of various competencies.

In 2010, 543 individuals in the community took advantage of Mt. Evans’ bereavement services. Of those, 335 received individual counseling 292 participated in groups, and some did both. Camp Comfort, a weekend camp that addresses the special needs of bereaved children ages 6 to 12, offered two sessions in the summer of 2010. A total of 116 children attended. 171 adults volunteered to oversee Camp Comfort’s recreational activities, conduct workshops and participate as “buddies,” giving lots of one-on-one attention to each child. Journeys, a newsletter focused on issues of grief and loss, was published 3 times in 2010 and mailed to 181 individuals. Our chaplains provided pastoral care for hospice patients and their families, helping them explore spiritual issues.

In 2010, 1,060 people took advantage of the low-cost blood screening and many other free health assessments at the Evergreen site of the 9Health Fair, which Mt. Evans has coordinated since 1988. Mt. Evans’ registered nurses and volunteers pro-vided monthly foot care and blood pressure clinics for 514 seniors through Project Support in Idaho Springs, the Georgetown Community Center in Georgetown, the Gilpin County Recreation Center in Black Hawk, and Elk Run Assisted Living, Green Ridge Apartments, and Rocky Mountain Village Estates in Evergreen. In conjunction with the Seniors’ Resource Center and Life Care Center of Evergreen, Mt. Evans spon-sored 9 monthly Family Caregiver Support Group ses-sions covering topics such as “Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s: The Basics.” Through our Speakers Bureau, Mt. Evans staff mem-bers and volunteers made 12 educational presentations to 165 people through service clubs, schools, professional organizations and private businesses.

Mt. Evans would not be able to meet the needs of our patients and families without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, who actively support all phases of our programs. We had 252 volunteers active in day-to-day operations. These volunteers are required to meet the same high standards as Mt. Evans’ staff and to attend a 20-hour orientation program, monthly meetings and educational programs. They also receive extensive background checks. More than 100 additional volunteers help Mt. Evans with fundraising and special events. Volunteers contribut-ed 20,359 hours in 2010, time equivalent to almost eight full-time employees. Seven of our patient-care volunteers have been with the agency for ten or more years.

Mt. Evans raised $583,124 through public support in 2010—including direct mail appeals, memorial contributions, foundation grants, United Way funding and our signature special events. We hosted an annual gala at Mount Vernon Country Club in March, put on the Freedom Run on July 4, sold the “Seasons of Our Mountains” community calendar and presented the Tree of Angels in December. We also partnered with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Evergreen Fine Art, Cartridges for Kids, Cars Helping Charities, the Triple Bypass and the Slacker Half-Marathon on other fund-raising efforts. Donations are vital to providing hospice and home health services to those whose insurance and personal resources are not enough to cover their medical needs. Fundraising also supports a variety of community programs such as bereavement counseling, respite care for families, transportation to medical appointments, and Camp Comfort, our bereavement camp for children.

Mt. Evans has a new name!

Mt. Evans Hospice and Home Health Care has changed its name to Mt. Evans Home Health & Hospice to raise awareness of the many services we provide in addition to hospice services.

In this Annual Report, we also unveil the new Mt. Evans logo, approved by the Board this past June, that came about as a result of an agency brand-ing study launched during fiscal 2010.
