Ramsay News page

My apologies to those who planned to attend the postponed April 10 meeting with Joe Ceci. We had not confirmed the attendance of our MLA (Jonathan Denis) or MP (Lee Richardson) and so mutually agreed to wait until May or June in hopes of bringing them to the table as well. Unfortunately this was decided after the April newsletter was out.

I did, however, speak again with Ed Rodenburg, President and CEO of Lilydale, to get the facts about the recurring realtor rumour I have heard regarding the relocation of the plant. He confirmed relocating the plant has been a priority since Sept. 2007, and that a Purchase and Sale Agreement was signed, but conditions were not met and thus the sale fell through on March 31. While they continue to actively seek an alternative location, they plan to build a new facility and the approvals process and construction will take some time. Lilydale will not commit to a specific date, only that they have now made this a priority and do not intend to stay in Ramsay. I hope the city will also make this a priority to expedite the process for an appropriate new location. Although the news they will eventu-ally leave may be somewhat comforting, it does not erase the myriad of issues surrounding the outdated facility’s integration within the community at present.

I have also forwarded a list of ongoing concerns directly to

Lilydale that need to be addressed whether the plant relocates or not. These include by-law infractions related to noise com-plaints as well as air quality testing to determine any environ-mental concerns related to slaughterhouse emissions.

I applaud the RCA for the dedication, effort and volunteer time put in regarding Lilydale. I decided to also act indepen-dently with several other residents to further push the issue. Various government agencies have been really remiss at acting on the numerous noise and other by-law and environmental complaints. There is nothing more frustrating than having everyone on the block call 311, CHR, Alberta Environment and then meet with city by-law officers to no avail (over the past four years for me, but many, many years for other weary residents).

I will keep you posted of any further development. I can be contacted at [email protected].

Here’s your chance to own your own home with $1225/month to help pay the mortgage.

Home features two fully contained 2bed/1bath suites plus double garage.

I currently own and operate the Ramsay Dairy/Coffee Bar on MacDonald Ave, and I live in Inglewood. I love the history of our community and I’d like to share some stories from a few weeks back.

A gentleman walked into the shop the other day for a coffee. Many people will sit, and if they are alone, I will strike up a conversation with them. We started talking about the history of the Ramsay Dairy / Coffee Bar, and I was telling him about my great grandfather when he came to town from the ranch to rodeo and sell bulls at the Calgary Bull Sale 92 years ago.

As it turns out, this customer used to stop at the old shop all those years ago, as did my grandpa, my dad, and even us kids. One thing leads to another, and we got to talking about MacLean’s Auction Mart that used to be behind the National Hotel. I was telling him that we used to come to town every Saturday from the ranch when I was a kid, to MacLean’s Auction Sale. Grandpa or dad would go to the Hotel for a beer or two, and I would spend the day buying and selling calves. I would buy a baby calf in the sale, take it around back, clip some hair off it, make it look nice, put a hand-made halter on it, run it through the sale again and double my money. This was a good little venture for a 12-year old kid, I used to make

$25 or $30 dollars a weekend doing this. Turns out this guy used to have a small farm east of the city and he remembers a certain young entrepreneur selling him calves about 35 years ago; he says he got quite the kick out of watching me. I would buy all the calves, keep running the same calves through the sale until I got the price up high enough - well, we laughed and laughed about that.

Then a couple weeks ago, this young lady walks in for a Cappuccino, we talked a little and then she says, ‘come out to the car, there is someone I want you to meet’. Well, I went out, and she introduced me to her grandmother. She and her husband own and operated this place for 25 years, up until 10 years ago. She was so glad that it was still operating, and said she heard about the Milkshakes and will be back for one soon! What a small world.

Some of the stories I hear about Inglewood/ Ramsay and Calgary in general since I have gotten the Ramsay Dairy/Coffee Bar back up and going are so good, wish I could hear more! If any of my fellow readers ever want to tell me a story, email me at [email protected] – or drop by the Dairy Bar for a milkshake or a coffee.

Is spring finally here? What better time to think about the joys of curling up with a book on a beautiful spring day. The gift of reading is one of

the greatest predictors of success in school and life. The gate-way to the world is through the pages of a book! At Ramsay School we celebrate and promote the gift of literacy everyday in our work with the students. Your enthusiastic involvement at home builds on their strengths – what you model as a reader will inspire your child to develop their passion to a higher level.

Here are some pointers to keep in mind courtesy of the Calgary Board of Education’s Curriculum Support Language Arts and English department titled “Children and Parents Reading Together”

Reading aloud to your child has many benefits:• It increases your child’s vocabulary• It helps your child build an understand-

ing of how books work• It helps your child learn that reading is

a pleasurable activity• Most important of all, it provides an

opportunity for you to spend quality time with your child

• Read different types of books such as: picture books, information books and nursery rhyme and poetry books

Have you visited your public library late-ly? Do you and your family have a mem-bership card? Did you know that they have evening and weekend programs?

Stay tuned for our June article which will focus on tips for what to do before reading, while reading and after reading. Being a book worm is cool!!

August 1 – 10, 2008Being an artist isn’t easy these days. The every-day realities of choosing a life in the arts are daunting: endless reams of grant forms, hopelessly erratic incomes, and trekking to new obscure locations to promote your work. The people who commit to this life are truly amazing individuals who accept these perils for the love of their craft.

The theatre artists who participate in the Calgary Fringe Festival (August 1 – 10, 2008) only receive income from tickets sale profits, which often barely cover expenses for the show. Wondering how you can help? Accommodation is a huge obstacle for most participants as hotels are not typically an option. By opening up your futon/couch/spare bed you can make a world of difference for these artists, not to mention the chance to meet some of the most innovative and interesting people out there.

To find out more about billeting a Fringe Theatre Artist, email [email protected] and put your love of the Calgary arts scene into action.

In December 2001, the Senate of Canada passed a motion to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in recognition of the important

contributions of Asian Canadians to the settlement, growth and social and cultural development of Canada and in recogni-tion of Canada’s diversity.

ImaginASIAN is a series of culturally engaging events that are presented each May to reflect the depth and diversity of Asian-Canadian communities in Calgary.

This year, the festival includes a wide range of fun events, including:• Opening Ceremonies at Olympic Plaza• Asian Family Celebration at the Glenbow Museum• Weekly bus tours to Asian locations, for food, culture or

shopping• Asian Night Market at Olympic Plaza• Celebration of VESAK, Buddha’s Birthday at the Glenbow

Museum• Exhibitions, films, theatre and much more For a full listing of all events, see www.asianheritagecalgary.ca

Asian communities are the fastest growing groups in Calgary. Chinese community members first started arriving in Calgary in the late 1800s, and there have been several different Chinatowns over the years. Newer immigrants from all parts of Asia have been arriving since the 1960s.

Regarding Ramsay’s own history, I am interested in learn-ing more about the Hing Wah market gardens which were located just east of Cemetery Hill – probably where the City Manchester yards are now? I found photographs in the Glenbow archives from the 1920s. Does anyone have any memories or further information on these gardens? Please con-tact Beth at 269-4199 or [email protected]

April is busting loose with more of daylight hours and the kids are keen on busting out

of their meeting halls. The Beavers are learning all about Dinosaurs… hold that thought… in a lot of cases it is the leaders who are finding out stuff from the Beavers! They will wrap up this section with a trip to Tyrell Museum in early May. In May, we will be outdoors most nights with a camp on the weekend of June 7th. They get to take mom or dad to camp.

The Scouts finished off their winter ski program with a trip into Lake O’Hara Alpine Club of Canada hut. The snow conditions were awesome. We took lots of pictures but the memory chip died on my camera so picture if you will a bunch of kids, skis in hand, standing in front of log cabins with glori-ous snow capped mountains in the background.

The ice has just come off our canoe-training pond and the kids are eager to go. We have already planned a May 24th canoe trip on the North Saskatchewan. As soon as school is out we will be off on a week-long biking trip in B.C. The rest of the summer will be spent scrambling mountains and doing lots of high adventure kind of stuff. As always it is never too late to join our gang as we are going year round. Call Rick at 278-2547.

Bob Baker - Enthusiasm on the Go

Now that spring is here, it’s nice to see all our neighbours out in their yards. I have known Bud Moore for years – for a friendly wave as we walk by in the dog park, or a quick chat when he is out roller-blading with his daughters. I have always been impressed with his high energy and enthusiasm, so it was nice to have a chance to sit down for a longer visit.

Bud, his wife Tina and their two dar-ling daughters, Adria and Alina, live on Scotsman’s Hill – with the full city view in front of their 1946 brick house. They wanted to live on the ridge, so when this house came up for sale in 1996, they jumped on it. Bud thinks Ramsay is a cool community, and loves the view, his yard, and the close-knit neighbours. He is itching to get into his huge vegetable garden. He enjoys making his own rel-ish, dill pickles, and tomato sauce every summer.

Bud grew up in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, near the border of Manitoba. His dad was an engineer with CN railway. Bud and his four sis-ters were the few non-Ukrainian kids in town. Bud grew up playing hockey, and he loved the beautiful woodlands in the area. The family still returns to visit family and enjoy their cabin on a nearby lake.

Bud and his friends were all interested in casual photography. Bud thought it would be like a dream to actually make a living from it – to be paid to travel and shoot photos. So he came to Calgary in 1986 to major in Photography at the Art College of Alberta. After ACA, he intended to move to the States. However, he met a lovely gal study-ing design down the hall, and fell in

love with both the girl and the city of Calgary.

Bud now has a very successful pho-tography business. He is well known for his unique and funky wedding photogra-phy. He has been in the industry for 15 years working primarily in Calgary, but his vast clientele has taken him across Canada and the USA. He also does a lot of artistic portraiture, bringing the mood and the feeling of each person into the work. “I find it intriguing and inspiring to try and get into people’s heads.”

About four years ago, Bud made the switch to digital photography. He resist-ed at first – after all the years of perfect-ing his techniques in the darkroom, he wasn’t sure if he trusted the new tech-nology. But most of his clients started to demand it – they wanted everything tomorrow. So he leased the equipment for a year, and learned how to work with it, before investing in all new cameras. He is a firm believer that it is the pho-tographer and the creativity behind the camera, rather than the equipment, that gives you the successful results. He tries to do only minor tweaking on the com-puter.

Tina runs her own business, Design Company, from home. She is busy with her own clients, and also does all the design work for Bud’s business. With the booming Calgary economy, Bud and Tina also invested in real estate, and own several rental properties around town.

Last month, the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts featured Bud and four other artists in their 6th annual Artist Home + Studio Tour. Over 200 people visited Bud’s Beltline studio during the self-guided tour, to view both his and Tina’s work.

“Life is super busy – but it is a good busy, not stressful or painful. The kids keep us active – with taekwondo, rollerblad-ing, rock-climbing and skiing. They are both enrolled in Fine Arts school, which is great, though it means a lot of commuting. They also attend Croatian school and do Croatian dancing, which is part of Tina’s heritage.”

This summer the family is looking forward to a six-week trip to Europe, to explore both Italy and Croatia. “I could punch myself, life is so great! We are extremely fortunate.”

Ramsay is a diverse and his-torical inner-city neighbour-hood, which is arts-friendly,

family-based, and active. We are a village surrounded by green space in the midst of the city. In this monthly column, we will meet one person who helps to define our wonderful community.
