Susan earned her baccalaureatedegree in Music Education from the University ofMinnesota-Duluth. She also taught preschool and K-12music and is an active researcher in early childhood musicand music teacher education. As ARCC’s chief academicofficer, Susan explores and establishes portal programpartnerships between ARCC and other institutions.

Marhorie McColm has been at George Brown College since1989 and has held a variety of leadership positions. Dr. McColm was the first graduate of the CommunityCollege Leadership Doctorate Program at the OntarioInstitute for Studies in Education at the University ofToronto. Her area of study is accountability in highereducation, performance indicators and performance funding.Dr. McColm has recently presented the results of herresearchmaterial at the annual conferences of the League ofInnovation for the Community Colleges, the Associationof Canadian Community Colleges, and the Association ofColleges of Applied Arts and Technology, Ontario. Patricia McGuire is a Professor at Negahneewin Collegeof Indigenous Studies located within Confederation College.Her family has been involved with aboriginal politics since1965. Her father was a political advocate and founder ofOMAA and indirectly MNO. She holds a BA degree inPolitical Science with Honors and a Masters of Arts inSociology. Her 2003 thesis is entitled: Worldviews inTransition: The Lake Nipigon Anishinabek Metis. She hasbeen involved in post-secondary education for 15 years andwas involved in the creation of the first indigenous basedbaccalaureate accredited degree, Bachelor of HumanServices: Indigenous Leadership and CommunityDevelopment.

Thomas Furlong is the Senior Vice President, BaccalaureatePrograms and University Partnerships, at St. PetersburgCollege in St. Petersburg, Florida. He serves as chiefexecutive officer of four-year programs offered by the collegedirectly and the university partnership baccalaureateprograms offered at the college as part of the UniversityPartnership Center. St. Petersburg College has existed for75 years and recently transitioned from a comprehensivecommunity college to a bachelor’s level institution.

Leading to his current position, from 1984 to1987, Dr.Furlong served as Executive Director of the FloridaPostsecondary Education Planning Commission located inTallahassee, Florida. The Commission was the research armof the Florida Cabinet and the Florida Legislature forpostsecondary education policy, budget and planning issues.This position provided opportunity for Dr. Furlong to workwith public and private colleges in Florida and nationally asFlorida’s “State Higher Education Executive Officer”(SHEEO) representative as well as the chair of SHEEO’sData Clearinghouse project with the National Center forEducational Statistics. From 1987 to 1995, Dr. Furlongserved as Vice President for Educational Services atTallahassee Community College. He was the chief academicand student services officer of the college. Most recently,Dr. Furlong served as Deputy Executive Director forEducational Services, State Board of Community Colleges,from 1995 to 2001. In this role he served as the ChiefAcademic and Student Services Officer for the StateCommunity College System (28 community colleges servingover 1 million students).

Dr. Furlong received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology fromLaSalle College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After relocatingto Florida, Dr. Furlong pursued further education withFlorida State University located in Tallahassee. In 1971 hereceived a Master of Science in Counselor Education and in1977 he received a Ph.D. in Postsecondary EducationManagement.

Dr. Furlong’s most recent publication is “The CommunityCollege Baccalaureate in Teacher Education: An EmergingPossibility”; New Directions for Community Colleges, TheRole of the Community College in Teacher Education.
