Community Engagement What a strange year 2020 has been so far! At times like this, we are reminded of the importance of resilience and community spirit. Residents had a fantastic opportunity to use the 5th Floor Green Roof tent on the fourth of July holiday weekend, to do a meaningful project for our own residents in Memory Care, by some of our independent residents. Generous support by Nifty Thrifty, which provided some of our quilted placemats, Culinary Services which provided the outdoor space, and Lifestyles Programming adding their advertising support, contributed to the success of 20 residents embellishing 15 mats for “fidgeting” when our Memory Care residents become agitated. Welcome to Edenwald Meet Marianne and Erwin Sekulow who bravely moved into Edenwald during the virus pandemic, quarantined for two weeks, and are now looking forward to meeting new friends and becoming involved in the many activities here. Marianne had a long and interesting journey to finally arrive in Baltimore. She was born in Germany in 1933, not a good year if you were Jewish. That was the year that Hitler came into power in Germany. After seven fearful years under Nazi rule, Marianne and her immediate family finally obtained visas in 1940 and left Germany for the USA. She first lived in St. Louis, Missouri with relatives and then off to Iowa where she spent a happy childhood. In 1956 she graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Nursing, which led her to her first job in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met her first husband, Louis H. Schaffer, MD. After a two-year stint in the Navy, they settled in Baltimore and had three children. In addition to being a busy mother, Marianne started doing volunteer work and organized a neighborhood association that supported Mayor William Donald Schaefer’s efforts to making the Inner Harbor a meaningful attraction for Baltimore City and uniting the city’s many diverse communities. Unfortunately, Marianne lost her husband in 1973. Returning to work, Marianne became a Certified Nurse Practitioner, in Family Planning and Adult Health.

Marianne and Erv met in 1978 while both were working at Johns

Hopkins and married in 1980, joining two families that now includes six children and nine grandchildren. Erv was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1936 and his family moved to Baltimore in 1938 during the height of the depression. He attended Arlington Elementary, Baltimore City College, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1959. For the first ten years after graduation, Erv worked in the family business, but then returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he worked in Development (fundraising) for 10 years. In 1973 he received a

Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University. In 1982 Marianne and Erv moved to the Boston area where Erv became Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at Brandeis University. Three years later they moved back to Baltimore where Erv became Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins University Office of Development, supervising Academic Divisions until he retired in 2000. In retirement he became the State President of AARP for two terms and volunteered as a Teacher’s Assistant in both Baltimore City and County elementary and middle schools, He was instrumental in establishing a Hillel House at the Johns Hopkins University and offers volunteer funding raising services to Hillel and Beth El Synagogue. Meanwhile, Marianne calls herself a” techie” having learned how to operate an IBM PC while in the Boston area researching and publishing “Inside Outlets: The Best Bargain Shopping in New England.” She continues working on her family memoirs and a cookbook for her children.

Meet John and Carol Engel This interview proved to be “unique” for two reasons: The first you readers can likely guess: it was conducted SIX FEET APART, behind MASKS so was the first (and hopefully the last) interview for THE

EDENTIMES that I had conducted in that fashion. It also was the most postponed, due to the coronavirus. The Engels actually moved-in

at the end of March, coming from 44 years in the same Towson home.

The second I would imagine no one would guess. It is fascinating and far more unusual than the first: The Engels are living in the SAME APARTMENT that both sets of their parents previously occupied -- #1112.

Here’s the history in a nutshell: The two sets of parents knew each other. (In fact, Carol’s father gave John’s father a cigar when Carol was born!) John’s parents were among the first residents of Edenwald when they moved into #1112. After they transferred to a higher level of care, Carol’s parents immediately occupied the apartment. All are now deceased. Then lo and behold, recently the unit became available again and voila, the Engels spoke for it. That information about this “legacy chain” made this interview “unique” for me. The chain of family occupancy is, so far, unique at Edenwald. Hopefully it won’t be the last.

Carol and John were Towson High School sweethearts, but didn’t marry until five years after graduation. They raised two boys and now are fortunate enough to have their six grandchildren and one great-grand living in the area. John’s career was in residential real estate, but at one time he sold casualty insurance. He served in the National Guard. Carol became an office manager after secretarial school and also was President of the Junior Department at the Woman’s Club of Roland Park some years ago. Both are active at Towson United Methodist Church, where John has been the Chair of Property and Maintenance Committee. At Edenwald Carol is already working at Nifty Thrifty and John, who likes to repair things, will be a great addition to our list of Fix-It Shop volunteers. John also is a model train devotee. As a couple the Engels enjoy overseas travel. Carol expressed their appreciation for the welcome they have received from the Edenwald family. Hopefully they will recognize all their new friends when – eventually – our masks come off!

Daily News in 1933 MARBLES PREVENT STICKING Put several marbles in the kettle when making chili sauce, tomato preserves, apple butter or anything which calls for continued stirring. The marbles roll constantly across the bottom of the kettle, which prevents the contents from scorching or sticking.

DISH COVER When putting pudding or other dishes outdoors to cool, use a cover made of embroidery hoops with a cheesecloth inserted. The contents will be free from dust while the hoop keeps the cloth from getting into the contents and weighs enough to keep it from blowing off.

KEEP REFRIGERATOR ODORLESS Melons, cucumbers, etc. may be placed together in the refrigerator without making the foods distasteful if you keep a piece of charcoal about 2 inches square in the corner of the refrigerator.

BOILING PREVENTS STRETCHING Boil the new clothesline for half an hour before using it to prevent its stretching. This makes it last longer and keeps it from knotting easily. To clean the clothesline and to prevent clothes from freezing to it in winter sprinkle dry baking powder and salt on a damp cloth before wiping the clothesline. Add a handful of salt to the rinsing water in winter to keep the clothes from freezing.

PAPER REFLECTS LIGHT When mending in the evening, place a large sheet of white paper on the table. The light from the lamp shining on the paper gives extra light and is a great help in threading needles.

Edenwald Got Talent! Do You Sing? Do you Dance? Are You A Magician? What Is Your Special Talent? Edenwald is filled with some amazing and talented residents. Do you have a talent you would like to showcase? Contact the Lifestyles Programming Department. No talent too big or small.

Baltimore Watercolor Society’s “Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibit 2020” For the last two years Sherry Morell, our Arts and Crafts Committee Co-Chair and the President of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, has been leading a (sold out) Edenwald Bus Trip to their annual blockbuster exhibit, the “Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition”, held at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown, MD. The best watercolor artists in a 7-state area (plus D.C.) submit images of their paintings each Spring in an effort to exhibit in the show, and for 2020 only 95 out of over 430 paintings entered were accepted. This year, however, due to COVID-19 the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Exhibition had to move totally ONLINE. This means that it is now available for all of our residents to view in the comfort of their units on their computers or cellphones. No long bus trip needed. During the drives to Germantown Sherry had lectured on the Art of Watercolor and

about the paintings and artists chosen for the exhibit. Although there is no “Watercolor 301 traveling bus lecture” this year, the remarks by the Exhibit Juror about the paintings she chose as Award Winners are a part of the online presentation. The Exhibit will be active until August 31. Simply log on to view the “2020 Online Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition” at: Baltimore Watercolor Society: www.bws.wildapricot.org

Laughing Matters Three Contractors Rich, Dave and Johnny are three contractors who are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. Rich first takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.” Dave also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.” Johnny doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, “$2,700.” The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?” Johnny whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the other guy to fix the fence for $700.”

Have you seen the Green Roof Garden?

July was a rather busy month for the Green Roof gardeners. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Green Roof Garden to review our gardeners’ horticultural efforts, now is the time.

As you read this, the gardens are reaching their prime and have been judged by Carrie Engle from Valley View Farms. She has selected first and second place winners in three categories - the most unique, the best design and the most colorful.
