Watching The Community Foundation in Action

I am so pleased to present our 2014-2015 Annual Report. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as President of The Community Foundation last year. Watching the foundation in action, I’ve seen each grant and scholarship awarded only after careful consideration to make the greatest impact. We safeguard the charitable intent of each donor, matching advised funds with local nonprofits that are working to achieve the same goals.

It’s not unusual for us to hear from a local donor, “Without The Community Foundation, I might never have known of this organization’s important work to address an issue I care deeply about.”

Over the years, I’ve been amazed by the wide variety of funds established by our generous donors. The needs of our community are numerous, but so are the charitable interests of people in our community who care.

When I think about The Community Foundation, I imagine the many “helping hands” that work together to make our region so special and to make a difference in the lives of people who struggle to make it through each day.

As an enthusiastic supporter of the foundation, I’ve become known for my “helping hand” analogy to illustrate the way we work with donors and nonprofits to preserve and grow a region that is truly special. I envision the palm of the hand as the foundation’s 125 endowed funds. Each finger represents one of our main areas of focus.

• Grantmaking. We awarded 190 grants valued at $1,092,588 to 131 nonprofits. (Which does not include The Community Give)

• Scholarships. Forty-two high school seniors were awarded scholarships totaling $134,003.

• The Community Give. On May 5, 2015, the Foundation’s second 24 hour giving event crossed the finish line with 8,013 gifts to local nonprofits totaling $822,266.

• Youth in Philanthropy. Through YIP, 40 area high school students learned the basics – including the challenges – of philanthropy and put their newly-gained skills to work recommending $12,000 in grants. Since the initiative began, YIP’s young leaders have awarded more than $133,000 in grants, as of June 2015.

• Women and Girls Fund. This important fund continues to grow. The goal is to involve 1,000 women who each give $1,000 to grow an endowed fund of $1 million to help address the needs of women and children in this region. Last year four nonprofits working to better the lives of women and girls in the region were awarded $18,000 in grants.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I want to thank the many generous donors who have made The Community Foundation their agent for change. As time goes by, and as needs and programs change, the Foundation will be there to respond just as our donors intended.

I also thank our dedicated Board of Governors and staff who work tirelessly to grow our community’s charitable assets, award grants and scholarships and seek innovative new ways for the foundation to help sustain and make our region a better place to live.

Hunger2

• The cooling shed was built with a grant from The Honeywell Charitable Fund.

• A grant from The Robert Cullen O’Neill Memorial Fund purchased and installed specialized lighting for the cooling shed.

• Volunteers at The Table bought reduced-price produce from local farmers, using a grant from The David Morgan Fund.

• In Caroline County, through a similar effort, The Caroline County Public Spirit Fund helped Glory Outreach provide food to 1,322 people over the winter holidays.

St. George’s Episcopal Church, regional farmers, local philanthropists and The Community Foundation will serve over 50,000 lbs. of fresh food to hungry local families and individuals this calendar year. A specialized cool-ing shed to store the reduced-price produce makes it possible. This innovative collaboration fed over 21,000 hungry individuals in its first year of operation.

Regular volunteer Tom Ware stands amid the produce in the newly built cooling shed at St. George’s The Table.

(New Funds in Blue)

Unrestricted FundsThink BroadlyDonors who contribute to the Foundation’s Community Enrichment Fund or establish their own unrestricted fund can participate in The Community Foundation’s annual competitive grants program. These donors can support a broad range of local concerns, including fast-emerging issues and future needs that we can’t yet anticipate. These flexible funds put the responsibility of identifying communi-ty needs and researching and selecting worthy charities on the Foundation, relieving donors of these challenges.

Donor Advised FundsStay InvolvedDonor Advised Funds provide a simple, powerful and very personal approach to giving. Donors stay actively involved in suggesting uses for their gifts. Donors can recommend charities to support at any time during the year, or work with Foundation staff to identify which community nonprofits are doing the best work on the issues most important to the donor.

The Sullivan Family Legacy Fund helped support Friends of the Rappahannock’s river advocacy through a capacity building grant.

A grant from The Rennie and Richmond McDaniel Family Fund expanded Friends of the Rappahannock’s ability to initiate river and watershed restoration projects.

Thousands of local children have been inspired and learned to respect the Rappahannock River through the Friends of the Rappahannock’s educational programs funded, in part, by a grant from The David Morgan Fund.

The Environment

The Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund memorializes this Stafford philanthropist by making grants aligned with his passion for preserving the land and providing opportunities for children to have healthy outdoor activities. Recent grants from the fund helped sus-tain trails on Meadowview Biologi-cal Research Station’s Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Birding and Wildlife Trail. This trail provides a free, outdoor, hands-on afterschool and youth environmental program at Downtown Greens.

Grants from The Community Foundation have assisted the Washington Heritage Museums in leading preservation and fund development for Mary Washington House, the Rising Sun Tavern, St. James’ House and Hugh Mercer Apothecary.

A grant from The Forbush Family Fund helped the nonprofit outfit an adminis-trative office.

Another grant from the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund underwrote the repair and preservation of external structures at Mary Washington House.

Painting by Terri Beringer on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of “saving Mary Washington’s Home” from promoters who wanted to take it to the 1890 World’s Fair.

• The Mahon Family Fund supported major initiatives at George Washington’s Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm and at Historic Kenmore through a grant to The George Washington Foundation.

• A Central Virginia Battlefields Trust grant from the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund protected monument markers at the location of “the Gallant Pelham’s” standoff with Union troops.

• The Dulcie H. Potter Memorial Fund helped restore Montpelier, the historic home of America’s 4th President James Madison and his wife Dolly.

Our Future

Children learn, explore and grow through play at the Children’s Museum of Richmond - Fredericks-burg, supported by grants from the Jimmy and Ellen Jarrell Family Legacy Fund, The Josiah P. Rowe III Family Legacy Fund, and The Hicks Family Fund.

Play is essential for healthy child development. Children’s Museum of Richmond – Fredericksburg

The Haven Make a Difference Fund helped Hugh Mercer Elementary School teachers combat problems that impede their students’ ability to succeed: hunger, limited English proficiency and a lack of basic writing skills.

A grant from The Trust for Public Education is helping students at Riverbend High School improve their meta cognitive abilities, considered crucial for efficient individual learning. Teachers have been trained to help students develop better awareness of how they learn, their individual learning needs and how to best meet those needs. The Fairy Godmother Project supports families and children affected by pediatric cancer with day-to-day support, financial relief and other meaningful services, thanks in part to a grant from The Hicks Family Fund.

Forty high school seniors put lessons of responsible philanthropy into action through the foundation’s own Youth in Philanthropy initiative. After thoroughly researching each nonprofit, Youth in Philanthropy members awarded three grants to local nonprofits that: help students with disabilities learn independent living skills, provide in-school grief support and offer specialized mental health services to abused children.
