ANNUAL REPORT 2010
Message from the Chairman
As I near the completion of a six year term on the board of directors of the Community Foundation of Dunn County, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the many changes that have taken place during that time.
A significant decision in 2010 involved changing our name and creating a new image. For those who have visited our offices over the years, it was easy to see that we also needed to upgrade our facilities. Over the past two years we secured additional office space, everything received a new coat of paint, modern office furnishings were installed, and during this past year we also upgraded our computer hardware. Due to increases in donor activity, fund development and community outreach, the hours of both our executive director and administrative assistant have increased.
Our fund growth has been steady and we have recovered from the market downturn in 2008. The dissolution of the Menomonie Community Health Foundation in May of this year created the largest fund now held by the Foundation and added more than $1.2 million to our asset base. Several new permanent funds were also established that will continue to provide important resources for future generations.
In our continuing efforts to help strengthen the non-profit organizations in Dunn County, we have served as fiscal sponsors for various fundraising activities. We were pleased to be able to enter into an agreement to handle the financial details of the Stepping Stones of Dunn County capital campaign that was launched for the new food pantry and their administrative offices. Such an arrangement has allowed their staff and board to focus on the many details of such a large building project and their core mission, while the Foundation manages the details of their donations and pledges.
Our 16th Annual Charity Golf Classic and 2nd Annual Fall Fling were major successes. Both events raised important operating funds for the Foundation, and also provided a way to help create more awareness of the role of the Community Foundation.
The implementation of a new software program is scheduled in early 2011 made possible by a generous grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation. This new technology will provide greater efficiency and overall improvement for all of the complex records management details required for an active and growing Community Foundation. Of course, none of the above could have been accomplished without the dedication of the board of directors, and the hard work of a competent staff.
Despite the many accomplishments during my time on the Board of Directors, I believe that we are merely on the edge of making a much greater impact. We are looking forward to continuing to help meet the needs of our communities for many generations and I encourage everyone to become involved in the work of the Foundation.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Thank you for the good that you do for our community through your charitable endeavors.
Charles Kell Board Chairman 2009-2010

After 15 Years - New Name & New Look
Fifteen years - Same purpose and same promise with a new name and a new look.
After several years of discussion, the Board of Directors officially changed the Foundation’s name to Community Foundation of Dunn County, Inc. Established in 1995 as the Greater Menomonie Area Community Foundation, the Board felt a new name would be more representative of our service area and also help minimize confusion.
With a new name, we also needed a new identity. Our new logo was designed using a stylized tree that combines the strength and long-term stability of the traditional oak tree with the movement and energy of a progressive organization. The leaves of the tree are interacting “water drops” that represent the interactions of community members helping one another and the involvement of the Foundation within the community.
An oak tree is often used to convey a message of strength and endurance. An oak may grow to a height of more than 100 feet, but starts with a small acorn. Similarly, community foundations begin with a few ‘acorn’ (or seed) gifts that multiply over time.
The Foundation introduced its new name and logo to about 150 guests at the Fall Fling in October and a new website was launched in mid-November. All of the changes have received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Plan Now to Give Later
Through this annual report we are able to share highlights from the past year and recognize the generosity of so many individuals, families and businesses that have helped make this year very special.
Since 1995, we have been welcoming donors into our Legacy Society as our way of honoring those who have made a lasting commitment by including a future gift to the Community Foundation of Dunn County in their estate plans.
Whether this is your life-long home or if this is the place you now call home, you’ve probably invested a lot here and this place has special meaning: You grew up here, fell in love here, raised your family here and maybe built a business here. There are places that have special meaning and there are causes that you are passionate about.
You can help make the future of your community healthy and vital for future generations by counting the Community Foundation of Dunn County as one of your heirs. You may join the Legacy Society by naming the Community Foundation as a beneficiary of:
• your will or trust• an insurance policy• your retirement account• or other gift that will take effect after your lifetime
For more information, please contact the Community Foundation staff for a personal and confidential meeting to discuss ways the Foundation can help you achieve your charitable goals.

“ The second season of the Dunn County SnowPark was a total success! Young kids, college kids, and even big kids took advantage of this new addition at the Dunn County Rec Park. A small and almost unusable hill has been turned into a super fun SnowPark, used by sledders, tubers, snowboarders, and skiers. Several new freestyle features were added this year including the shack, the satellite disk, and the “barrel-o-fun”. Future plans include lights, dirt jumps, and a speaker system going in this summer.
The Dunn County SnowPark was able to organize with the help of the Community Foundation. By establishing a fund at the Foundation it made it easy for our contributors to give to a place they can trust plus receive the benefit of making a tax deductible gift. The Foundation is truly an outstanding resource for non-profits and community groups in the area.”

Foundation Funds (as of 12/31/2010)
It is easy to start a named endowment fund and numerous new funds were opened during 2010. It is even easier to make a gift to an existing fund and the Foundation accepts gifts at any time to an established fund. Gifts may also be made to memorialize or honor a loved one, colleague, or friend.* Indicates that a fund was opened during 2010.
OPErATiNG FuND
Gifts to this fund will help ensure the work of the Foundation in its role of helping individuals, families and businesses carry out their charitable goals that will benefit organizations, programs and services that they care most about. Direct gifts may be made to the Fund and proceeds from the Charity Golf Classic and Fall Fling fundraising dinner are also directed to operations.
ACOrN FuNDS
Acorn funds are established by donors who want to build a fund over a longer period of time. The funds retain their earnings as donors make additional contributions. When the fund reaches $10,000 it becomes a permanent fund of the Foundation and distributions are made according to the terms of the fund agreement.
• Grace Episcopal Fund * Will become a permanent endowment designated for Grace Episcopal Church
• Tom & Barb Johnson Fund Intended to become a Donor Advised Fund
• James & Hilda Miller Family Fund Intended to become a Donor Advised Fund
AGENCY FuNDS
The Foundation administers endowed or quasi-endowed funds for nonprofit organizations in Dunn County. Organizations are encouraged to establish funds to help ensure their own future with an endowment that provides important future financial support.
• United Way of Dunn County• Indianhead Enterprises • Menomonie Lions Club
DONOr ADViSED FuNDS (DAF)
A DAF is the most flexible type of fund that can be established. Donors may recommend grants to a variety of organizations depending on the needs of the community or the wishes of the donor. A donor advised fund is an excellent choice for those that may be considering establishment of a private foundation. The Community Foundation handles all of the administrative work, there are no tax filings or forms to fill out, but the donor still has flexibility in achieving their charitable goals.
• Doug & Ann Larson Fund • The Micah Fund• Mickelson Family Fund • Joan Polasky Fund

Contributions to this fund are unrestricted in their use and are the primary source of funds for community grants. Grants are made upon recommendation of the Grants Committee and approval of the Board of Directors. Unrestricted gifts are the most flexible and allows the Foundation to be responsive to community needs as they change over time. Only the earnings from gifts placed in this fund are used to make grants to non-profit organizations that provide programs and services in the areas of arts and culture, history and heritage, the environment, education, health, humanitarian needs and civic improvement.

Donors of a single gift of $2,500 or more may ask to be included in the Founder’s Society. A portion of their gift is included in the Unrestricted/General Endowment Fund. A Field of Interest Fund supports an area of interest of the donor. As an example, a donor may be interested in the arts but wants to provide support for numerous organizations. “We Like it Easy, Convenient and Worthwhile”
Our first experience with a Community Foundation was in the mid-90’s when a friend helped establish the Community Foundation of Hendricks County, Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. We were impressed by the concept that the Community Foundation would be a vehicle to assist those wishing to support local community projects with causes that mattered to them. The Foundation also provided the benefits of long-term financial planning and associated tax benefits.
I was very fortunate to benefit from major financial support in the form of assistantships, scholarships and fellowships as I pursued degrees in agriculture science. As we “raced to the moon” in the late 50’s and 60’s science studies were emphasized. And, unlike today, many students graduated with little or relatively small outstanding student loans, which is now hard to imagine.
As a way to “give back” for the support we received in the past, we established a Donor Advised Fund through the Community Foundation as way to supplement to the educational needs of students in the Boyceville School district and the Boyceville Education Scholarship Trust (BEST). We started the Fund by honoring the students entering elementary school in 2009 and will add to the fund each year for 12 years. When they graduate in 2021, their class will be the first recipients of gifts from the Fund. Fund performance reports of the investments can also be made available to students and teachers so that real life examples may be used as teaching aides. We also felt that making students aware of the importance of community support in their elementary years may also encourage positive performance habits.
It was an “easy decision” to make this charitable choice, which we believe is an investment in the future. The Community Foundation of Dunn County is like an umbrella, conveniently protecting the donation, the donors and their causes with the flexibility that only an accountable local organization can most accurately understand.

Unexpected kindness and generosity.
A true act of generosity involves giving without getting something in return—not even a thank you. Marshall W. Hagen of Colfax passed away early in 2010 at the age of 98, but he will live on to help future generations through his gift to the Community Foundation.
There were probably only a handful of people that knew of his desire to help ensure that there would be a permanent source of income to support organizations that directly benefit the lives of people in Dunn County who are suffering from cancer.
In October, the Marshall W. Hagen Memorial fund was established as a result of his bequest. Although not here to receive our thanks or take any credit, Mr. Hagen has left his legacy of caring and kindness. Grants will be made from the fund to area organizations whose work helps improve the lives of area cancer patients. The fund has been established as an endowment, so the corpus will remain intact and only the earnings will be used to make grants

Foundation receives Otto Bremer Foundation Grant to improve Technology
Good technology is essential in today’s business environment and the non-profit world is no different. In the fall the Community Foundation received a generous grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation to help improve our management information systems. The work of the Foundation requires sophisticated software to manage all of our finances, grant details, donor information, fund management and distribution, event management, and all the other record keeping that is required by State and Federal laws.
With the new software, we expect to not just save staff time, but it will also provide our donors and fund holders with more timely information, the annual audit and tax preparation work will be streamlined and simplified, and complex financial reports can be easily and accurately created in minutes versus hours or days that are needed with our current systems.
We are anxious to implement the new software during the spring of 2011 and want to again extend our sincere appreciation to the Otto Bremer Foundation for their support.

An Acorn Fund was established by Charles & Pat Kell to benefit Grace Episcopal Church. When it reaches the endowed level of $10,000, the fund will be converted to the Grace Episcopal Endowment Fund to help ensure the future of the church. Several years ago, Denise Sedlak and her late husband Bob, established a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation. In 2010 Denise and her children decided that instead of making grant recommendations each year to the Foundation’s Board of Directors, they wanted to create a way to provide perpetual support for the Public Library. Upon approval of the board of directors of the Foundation, their fund has now been changed to the Denise and Bob Sedlak Menomonie Public Library Fund.
“Public libraries have been a big part of my life since I was a child,” Denise told us. “I read all the time and I have used the Menomonie Public Library extensively since moving here in 1983. I would be totally lost without that service. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the fund we had established could best be used in this way and my children agreed. My son said ‘you practically live there and this seems like a great idea.’ The library staff is wonderful and I appreciate all of the services that they offer and wanted to show that appreciation.”

Friends and alumni of Colfax High School now have the opportunity to help ensure that the students of the Colfax School District continue to have educational experiences and opportunities that will prepare them for a successful future. The Colfax Alumni Fund was established in the spring of 2010 by Dave Olson of Menomonie, a Colfax graduate, and Dennis Geissler, school administrator. The fund was announced at the all-school reunion in July. The Colfax Alumni fund will support a wide variety of projects or programs for the District such as facilities and equipment, student activities, or scholarships.
CBJ kiDS TO CAMP FuND
Cammie Johnson suffered from Juvenile Diabetes and unexpectedly passed away from complications of disease just before her 21st birthday. Our family created a golfing event in her memory to help raise funds to support other kids that suffer from diabetes.
The proceeds support both the Cammie Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund and the newly created CBJ Kids to Camp Fund. The CBJ Kids to Camp Fund provides scholarships for youth up to the age of 19 that will allow them to attend recreational, educational or other personal development type camps during the summer. “These camps provide safe environments for young people with diabetes to experience activities that are often not available to them in more traditional settings because of their illness. Camp always afforded Cammie a time to feel like a normal kid. She spent a lot of her time counseling and mentoring younger kids at camp, and we feel this is the best way to honor her memory.”
Mark Johnson, Cammie’s Father

Confirmed in Compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations
Blue eyes. Dimples. An easy laugh. You passed on your looks and mannerisms. But will your children and grandchildren inherit your generous spirit? Of all the things you’ll pass on, the most important is how to give back.
You can set a great example by counting your community among your heirs in your will or estate plan. Your charitable bequest will improve our quality of life and help our community grow—forever.
For more information, contact the Community Foundation of Dunn County today.Call Us at 715-232-8019 or Visit www.cfdunncounty.org
