COMMUNITY HARVEST PROJECT
ANNUAL REPORTThe Impact of One Million More2019
Page 01
Dear Friends of Community Harvest Project, Our community made it possible for us to donate more than onemillion pounds of fresh produce to local hunger relief over thelast five years. Fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables were madeavailable to 83,538 of our neighbors who don’t have enoughnutrient-rich food to put on their tables. This food is critical asthe cost of an average meal has risen to $3.55 in Massachusetts– the most expensive in the country and 18% higher than thenational average – and this was before the economic shutdowncaused by COVID-19. In 2019 alone, 7,563 volunteers came together to grow 417,644servings of produce. As we reflect on the past year, we arelooking forward to the impact of the next million pounds that wegrow and donate to those experiencing food insecurity. 2020 is already looking much different for us. We will havesignificantly fewer volunteers due to social distancing causing usto change our farming methods. Increased need from our partnerdistribution agencies as they provide critical food and services tothose hit hardest by COVID-19 keeps us focused on what ismost important: growing produce for hunger relief. While weadjust and adapt, we cannot thank you enough for pastvolunteering, donating, and spreading the word about ourmission. We are here for the community, and because of thecommunity. As the need for fresh produce for hunger reliefcontinues, your support ensures we will be here to meet it. Sincerely, Wayne McAuliffe David GuarinoInterim Executive Director Board President

The Impact of One Million More
Our Mission:Community Harvest Project (CHP) is a 501(c)3 non-profitorganization operating in Grafton and Harvard, MA. Our mission isto provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those experiencinghunger through volunteer farming. Thousands of volunteers of allages and abilities visit our farms each year to ensure our neighborshave the healthy food they need to thrive.
Why We FarmFood insecurity is a widespread but often invisible issue inour state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access toenough food for an active, healthy life. For over 1 in 9people, purchasing food becomes an uncertain choice.
When limited funds are necessary for expenses such as rent, heat, transportation, and medication, the quality of the foodthat is available declines. There is an alarming cycle of foodinsecurity and chronic disease that begins when an individual orfamily cannot afford enough nutritious food.
Healthy Food is a Privilege

The Impact of One Million More - Farming
We farm a variety of fruits and vegetables so that we canharvest and donate crops continuously during our growingseason, provide a wide range of nutrients, and donateproduce that is culturally relevant to a variety ofpopulations.
We believe in the power of the community to enact change. This is why our farms are open to everyone to volunteer, soall of our hands do the work of lifting up our neighbors.

This year we started the “Tuesday Crew” a new group ofspecialized volunteers that tackled projects at our Graftonfarm and Harvard orchard. On their namesake day this groupwent beyond basic farming to accomplish big projects, including care and maintenance of our blueberries, pruningapple trees, pond remediation, and property maintenance, aswell as installation of irrigation, signage, and fencinginfrastructure.
“The Tuesday Crew tackled projects andtasks requiring an elevated degree ofattention to detail, equipment operation,self-organization, and ownership. Theirimpact on our operation is evident andtangible across the Grafton farm.” - Dave Johnson, Farm Manager

Our annual plant sale brought over 1,000 gardenersto our farm to stock up on fruits, vegetables, herbs, annuals, and perennials. Plant purchasers not onlysupported local hunger relief, but promote growinghealthy foods and healthy eating through their owngardens.
Each spring we invite community members to adopt fullrows of crops at our farm and trees at our orchard.Their adoption provides the funds to seed, water, andfertilize crops so we can grow the best possible producefor hunger relief.
Our second annual Sunflower Festival featured asunflower maze, plus rows of zinnias and amaranth tobuild beautiful bouquets. Attendees brought picnics orvisited the food truck, picked flowers, and the kids didcrafts. After the event our vibrant flower fieldsremained open to the public for pick-your-ownflowers.

One in a Million - Carolyn Wedholm AmbroseSometimes you are just lucky enough to meet someone that isone in a million, and Carolyn Ambrose was just that person. With her unwavering spirit, enthusiasm, bright smile, a skip inher step and an occasional celebratory jig - we were lucky tocall her a colleague and friend. Her energy had no limit, herjoy in walking up the sidewalk to the barn every dayregardless of the challenges that she was experiencing waspalpable. It was the little things at work that challenged herand made her belly laugh while she would climb the biggestmountains and find ways around the largest obstacles withouteven blinking. When she talked about our mission withvolunteers and donors she got them to believe in our work toensure that others would have the benefit of fresh fruits andvegetables on their tables. When she walked in the fields orthe orchard she always said this is where she was supposedto be and smiled widely. She was loved by many and if youwere lucky enough to know her you likely had a great friendand a story of your own to share. These are just a few of themany reasons that we will always remember CarolynAmbrose, a life force like no other and surely one in a million.
