Hello all,
The excitement on Monday morning mirrored the first day of the year.
Children were all struggling to find where to put their school bags and the
location of their classroom lockers. The extra space that Daydd created
with this design is amazing. We are just waiting for the pin boards, a bit
more painting, a drinking water bubbler for outdoors and some more bean
bags and we are all done.
By the time this newsletter is sent we will have completed the grass debate.
The researching and quoting on this major project has been a very long and
drawn out process. I have contacted over 5 different contractors for the
installation of natural turf. Some just are not interested in quoting, others
have varied opinions of what needs doing. I have also contacted landfill
companies, earthmovers, turf supplies and irrigators. On the artificial side
I have had 4 quotes showing slightly different products with a range of
warranties and maintenance requirements. Next week grounds and buildings
will make a recommendation to take to school council in week 3. If that
recommendation is accepted then works for the agreed product should be
completed by the start of the new year. Whichever way we go there will be
the existing turf to dispose of. If you have any suggestions for its use then
please let me know. It is very much free to anyone who wants it. One
company told me that it can be used to seal dams. I have not evidence that
this is true.
Hopefully you all received you bushfire info and you understand what is
happening. NEXT THURSDAY YOU WILL RECEIVE A REHERSAL TEXT
FROM THE SCHOOL PHONE. The text will read. This is a test SMS
from the school. Please respond with yes once it is received. If I don’t
get a response from each family by 3:30 I will make follow up phone
calls. I apologise for the inconvenience however this is a high chance that
we will be relocating at one point before the end of the year and we need to
have ruled out as many errors as possible before then. Julie

Friends of the Arts at Chewton (FoARTs) by Affrica
On behalf of parents at Chewton Primary we would like to extend a big Congratulations and Thanks to our
fantastic Art and Music teachers Kate, Nicole, Hilary and Drew for the wonderful Art Exhibition and the
fabulous African drumming workshop "after party" last term. And extend these thanks to all Chewton Staff,
who made it happen so smoothly managing the behind the scenes coordination of the big day. Much has
been said (rave reviews in the Chewton Chat!) and we hope it might even become a regular feature of the
Chewton School calendar??! What an amazing term for the Chewton Arts program.
Meanwhile...
A group of parents meet regularly to catch up with what is happening in the Arts program at Chewton and
plot ways to help out and support.
We all know the great work and dedication the teachers at Chewton give to all their programs. An active and
integrated Arts program has so many benefits for our kids and school community (I'm sure there's science on
that somewhere!) - But active Arts programs with exhibitions, performances, shows etc can often do well
with extra hands on help, so that is what this group is about.
All welcome, even just to drop in if you are curious or can’t make it regularly. Upcoming Arts events covered
at the meetings and calls for volunteers are always communicated to the whole school community via the
newsletter too.
Next Meeting Monday 16th 3pm, in the small office next to the Art room.
Art on Wednesdays
All classes have art on a Wednesday. Kate does make sure that children were art smocks
however this does not stop children from using their shirts to wipe their hands. I suggest that
Wednesday could be a day you send your child in one of their older school shirts. The paint is
supposed to wash out of clothes but the yellow shirts are not very forgiving.
NOTICES TO BE RETURNED PLEASE:
Boomerang Medical, clothing and dietary forms: Grade 2
Tabloid Sports: Grade p-2
Just Eat It: Grade 5-6

Our leadership team developed this evaluation of footy day
Positive Negative Interesting
Everyone got a go Older kids were not very interested
We can have it every second year
The leaders were fair Not enough good footballs
We need more good footballs
It was positive Not enough bread rolls for everyone’s lunch order.
We need to make it more interesting.
We had positive feedback
Next time we could do a different sport at other times that is not footy or soccer
It was well organized
We could have a game of football
for the older kids
It was good having kids from the secondary collage come.
Lots of kids dressed up
If you haven’t had a chance to pop in and see the works that were completed in the holidays,
please do so. This painting design is a combination of many of the children’s ideas. A small
working party of grade 2-6 looked at all of the drawings and selected the elements they liked.
Little Scientists STEM Conference at Abbotsford Convent 26th September
2017
By Tav
During the first week of the holidays I attended a teachers’ conference with
mum about STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics),
STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics),
STREAM (science, technology, research/reading, engineering, arts,
mathematics)
I was happy that mum was able to learn about how the digital age has
impacted on teaching and learning and how technology is a part of this change
in curriculum since her childhood.
During the second part of the day, we were able to attend workshops and had
fun exploring with STEM experiences.
There were 4 workshops with 6 subjects: Water, Air, Engineering, Optics,
Mathematics and Human Body.
Mum and I attended the ‘Taster 2 Workshop’ which combined the subjects:
Engineering, Mathematics and The Human Body.
I was asked to make a cubic bubble because I learnt how to
make one in maker hour.
Mum and I engineered a mannequin and problem solved how it
would stand amongst other numerous things.
Others created mandalas on a big scale using chalk and string.
