Yom Kippur, the ultimate day of repentance, has the Jewishnation simultaneously praying, fasting and asking for forgive-ness. It begins with the somber, quiet, and melodious into-nation of Kol Nidrei and ends with the entire congregationshouting Hashem hu HaElokim (G-d is the Al-Mighty) seventimes after various requests of forgiveness. It seems that atthe time when our strength is waning our greatest and loudestpleas are spent. Shouldn't we begin the day with the strongrequests for forgiveness and save the subdued prayers forwhen our bodies are weak from hunger and our lips parchedfrom lack of water?

Rav Eichenstein, the Ziditchover Rebbe, tells the followingstory:

One Friday, a man entered the study of the TchortkoverRebbe with a request that was very common in those days.

"My son was drafted into the army," the man began. "How-ever, we have a way out. On Sunday, we are going to a doctorwho will falsely declare him unfit for service. This way he will

be spared certain misery, perhaps even death in that terriblearmy. Rebbe," he asked, "I need your blessing that he evadethe draft."

The Rebbe quietly told him that Shabbos was nearing andhe could not concentrate on blessings. The man should re-turn to him on Friday evening after his tisch (ceremoniouschasidic table).

The man did so. After most of the chasidim had left, theman repeated his request, almost verbatim. Again the Rebbewas non-committal. "Return to me after the morning serv-ice."

Unperturbed, the man noted that he would really like to re-solve this matter before Sunday morning.

Shabbos morning, after services, the man approached theRebbe again. Calmly he repeated the predicament. "Sundaymorning I am going to a doctor who will falsely declare myson unfit for military service. Please pray that we will evadeconscription." The Rebbe was not moved. Again, he deferred

s”xcuntil the afternoon.

At the third Shabbos meal, the scenerepeated again, precisely the way ithad the previous three times. "I un-derstand that you are leaving Sundaymorning. Come back to me late Satur-day night," said the Rebbe. "By then Iwill have an answer for you."

By this time, his Chasidim's curiositywas piqued. They had never seen theirRebbe so reluctant to mete a blessing, especially when it was one that wouldsave a Jewish soul from the frightfulPolish army.

Saturday night a large crowd gath-ered as the man approached with hisrequest. Frustrated and disgruntled, the man, once again, repeated hisstory, almost verbatim, for the fifthtime.

Immediately, the Rebbe sprungfrom his chair and began to shout."What are you asking me? Why wouldone even try to evade the service ofour wonderful country? How dare youask me for a blessing of that sort?Your son would make a fine soldierfor our country. I wish him the bestof luck in the army!"

The man quickly scurried from theroom and left town. The Chasidimstood shocked and bewildered. Neverhad they heard such an uncharacteris-

tic outcry from the Rebbe.

"I will explain," said the Rebbe."The man was a fraud. He had no son,and if he did, he wanted him in thearmy. He was sent by the governmentto test our loyalty. Thank G-d wepassed the test."

"But, Rebbe!" cried the chasidim,"how did you know?"

"Simple," explained the Rebbe. "Iwatched the level of intensity. Fromthe moment he met me until tonightthere was no increase in intensity norfeeling of desperation with each re-quest. The moment I heard his re-quest tonight and it contained nomore passion or desperation than hisfirst request on Friday night, I knewhe was a fraud."

We stand a whole entire day inprayer, and end with a ne'ilah prayer, after nearly 24 hours of pleading. Thelitmus test of our sincerity comes asthe heavenly gates are being closed. Asthe sun begins to set, our pleas shouldintensify. That crescendo assures oursincerity. It also should assure us aHappy & Healthy Sweet New Year

"It takes all kinds." That, essentially is the message of themitzvah of the "Four Kinds" -- the etrog (citron), lulav(palm frond), hadas (myrtle) and aravah (willow) -- overwhich we recite a blessing on the festival of Sukkot. In thewords of the Midrash:

The etrog has both a taste and an aroma; so, too, do thepeople of Israel include individuals who have both Torahlearning and good deeds.... The date (the fruit of the lulav)has a taste but does not have an aroma; so, too, do the peo-ple of Israel include individuals who have Torah but do nothave good deeds.... The hadas has an aroma but not a taste;so, too, do the people of Israel include individuals who havegood deeds but do not have Torah.... The aravah has notaste and no aroma; so, too, do the people of Israel includeindividuals who do not have Torah and do not have gooddeeds.... Says G-d: "Let them all bond together in one bun-dle and atone for each other."

The Lubavitcher Rebbe points out that the Midrash is notjust saying that "all are part of the Jewish people" or "all areprecious in the eyes of G-d" or even that "all are necessary";it says that they "all atone for each other." This implies thateach of the Four Kinds possesses something that the otherthree do not, and thus "atones" and compensates for thatquality's absence in the other three.

In other words, it's not just that it takes all kinds to makea people -- it also takes all kinds to make a person. AndSukkot is the time when we bond with each other so that

the other's qualities should rub off on ourselves.

The etrog says: "I am perfect. I balance learning and doingin flawless equilibrium. In my life, knowledge and action donot overwhelm or displace one the other, but rather fulfilland complement each other." This is something we all needto say, at least once in a while. We all need to know that wepossess the potential for such harmonious perfection, andthat we each have those moments in our lives when we at-tain it.

The lulav says: "I am utterly devoted to the pursuit of wis-dom, awareness and self-knowledge. Doing is also impor-tant, but my first priority is to know G-d and (thereby) mytruest self, even if this means withdrawing from involve-ment with the world." This is something we all need to say,at least once in a while. We all need to know that there is thepotential for such consummate knowledge in us, and thatwe each have those moments in our lives when we attain it.

The hadas says: "What our world needs is action. Knowl-edge of G-d and self-awareness are worthy goals, but I havea job to do. I need to build a better world -- enlightenmentmay have to wait." This is something we all need to say, atleast once in a while. We all need to know that our missionin life is to "make the physical world a home for G-d", andthat there are times when the need for action takes prece-dence over everything else.

The aravah says: "I have nothing. I am nothing." This issomething we all need to say, at least once in a while.

So now that you have cleansed your soul on RoshHaShanah and promised HaShem that this year you will per-form more mitzvots, learn more Torah and will be a betterperson, what’s left? Well if I may suggest, let’s work on pro-tecting and healing the body that Hashem has lent you, tohouse your neshama for your visit here on earth (and mayyou be blessed for may happy years).

Let’s begin with some basics, and to do this we’ll comparethe body to a favorite machine of ours—the car. In orderfor your car to run properly it needs gas, oil, and other fluids. But if your car sits for too long these fluids get thick andcongeal and your battery probably dies as well. The bestway to keep a car intact is to make sure it has gas, clean oiland that it moves. Both of these factors also work for ourbodies. In order to stay healthy, with plenty of energy, weneed to eat beneficial foods (or gas), stay hydrated (radiator, brake and transmission fluids), consume good oils and movearound, or else our battery dies.

A master herbalist I was once working with said that ifyour clients can change only four small things in their lives, they will be surprised at how much better they will feel injust a few weeks. Here they are:

• Make sure to drink filtered water every day, and yes, eightcups a day are required for proper hydration. Many peoplesuffer from chronic exhaustion due to dehydration.

• Switch your oil to olive oil in as many of your foods aspossible. The extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil is the health-iest, but it has a pungent flavor. This form of olive oil isbest used at room temperature over salads, soups or meat. For frying and baking one should use the extra light oliveoil.

• Change your salt to sea salt. Regular salt is mined fromthe ground, but salt coming from the sea is richer in miner-als.

• Add berries to your diet.

Now let’s discuss the issue of exercise. We know thatthere are those avid exercisers who passionately love goingto the gym, and the hikers who get exhilarated climbing bighills, and you even have yogi’s who enjoy contorting theirbodies into abnormal positions while trying to breathedeeply, and then there are some of the rest of us. There ex-ists a population of people who wonder if exercise meansbending down to tie their shoes, or working their bicepsmean opening the refrigerator. While this is not altogetherbad—and we should always be encouraging—it certainlyisn’t sufficient. The old saying is in fact true—that if youdon’t use, you’re bound to lose it—meaning that things inyour body, like a car, will not function properly unless it ismoved. Many of my clients say, “Hey, I have never movedmy body much, so what could be the problem?” Unfortu-

nately, the problem is that as we age, circulation becomes moredifficult because the heart is a muscle that needs to be kept stim-ulated, in order to maintain proper blood flow. Moms also ask,“Hey, if I bend down to pick up my kids’ toys and stomp upand down the stairs yelling at them isn’t that exercise?” The an-swer is: perhaps a little, yes, but sadly a lot more no. It will in-crease your circulation, but during stressful times your bodyproduces a harmful chemical called cortisol, and your heart willnot benefit from nervous movement in the same way as it doesfrom endurance movement. During endurance movement thebody stresses physically, but the mind remains at ease! Imaginenow that you decided to walk three times a week, during the firstten minutes you might have nervous thoughts, “Are my kids okayat home,” “Gosh I forgot to buy gefilte fish for Shabbos”. Con-cerns like these will produce the hormone cortisol, but after thefirst ten minutes of nervousness, you begin to relax and feel thewind on your face, feel your muscles moving, and think of howgreat it is you are finally exercising. Now your body will beginto produce the wonderful hormone of oxytocin, which will helpheal both your body and your mind.

Ideally, your goal during exercise should be raising your heartrate for a steady twenty minutes, at least three times a week. Soif your only form of exercise is walking, then begin at a slowsteady pace and gradually increase it to a slightly more aggressivespeed; which you can maintain for a full twenty minutes.

It was many years ago that my teacher, the herbalist, demanded

that her clients consume lots of berries, and she did this beforeall of the current studies have confirmed the amazing healingproperties of berries. Researchers Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Ph.D.,and Marshall G. Miller have found that, “recent research increas-ingly shows that eating berry fruits can benefit the aging brain. To analyze the strength of the evidence about berry fruits, theyextensively reviewed cellular, animal and human studies on thetopic. The review concluded that berry fruits help the brain stayhealthy in several ways. Berry fruits contain high levels of an-tioxidants, compounds that protect cells from damage by harm-ful free radicals. The two also report that berry fruits change theway neurons in the brain communicate. These changes in signal-ing can prevent inflammation in the brain that contribute to neu-ronal damage and improve both motor control and cognition.”

So, to recap, let’s drink water, change to good oils, use sea salt, eat berries and exercise. That doesn’t sound too difficult doesit? By taking on these little changes you can have a year whereyour soul, body and brain have the power and energy to accom-plish all they need to, down on earth.

If G-d is "perfect," as Judaism says, what prompted Him tocreate the universe? What void was He seeking to fill?

The answer provided in Jewish Mysticism is that G-d desiredmarriage. Marriage necessitates the existence of someone dis-tinct from yourself with whom to share your life, a union ofhusband and wife. G-d chose humanity as His bride.

What a marriage this has been--a roller coaster of romance, affection, quarrels and estrangement. In every generation, many counselors advocated a divorce while others proclaimedthe Groom dead. Yet, the relationship has endured becauseboth partners intrinsically know that they belong together. When all veils are removed, man manifestly yearns for unionwith G-d.

According to the Kabbalah, the High Holiday season is theannual experience of the cosmic matrimony between G-dand humanity. The five key spiritual moments of the seasonparallel the basic phases of a conventional courtship andunion. The holidays invite us to journey through this processagain and rejuvenate the relationship.

The Courtship

The Hebrew month ofElul precedes the HighHolidays. This month isdescribed in Chassidicteachings as a time when"the King goes out tothe field to meet withHis people, greetingthem with kindness andtenderness, displaying ajoyous face to all." We, inturn, "open our hearts toG-d."

This time provides uswith an opportunity toget to know G-d.

The Groom Proposes

The world goes hay-wire, says Master Kab-balist Rabbi Issac Luriah."During the night ofRosh Hashanah," hewrites, "the conscious-ness animating the uni-verse becomes frail andweak." The great Jewishmystics would, in fact, feel physically weak dur-ing the night of Rosh

Hashanah.

All of existence was brought into being for the sake of thisproposed marriage. If we refuse Him, then it was all in vain. The entire cosmos awaits our decision.

The Bride Commits

On the morning of Rosh Hashanah, a piercing sound risesfrom the Earth: the cry of the shofar. It is a simple cry, ex-pressing man's yearning to connect with the Divine.

We have decided. Our answer is yes.

The Wedding

The wedding day arrives: Yom Kippur. A day described inthe Kabbalah as "the time of oneness" in which cosmic brideand groom forge a bond for eternity.

In the Jewish tradition, bride and groom fast on their wed-ding day. On the day we unite with G-d, we abstain from foodor drink as well. The Talmud teaches that upon marriage, allthe sins of the groom and bride are forgiven.

Souls in the RainBy Yosef Y. Jacobson

That's why this day is called Yom Kippur, "the day of atone-ment."

The marriage ceremony begins with the stirring melody ofKol Nidre, in which we remove the power from vows andaddictions that tie us down. During these profound moments,we attempt to free ourselves from compulsive behavior andnegative habits and let go of resentment, animosity, anger, fear and envy.

The traditional Jewish marriage ceremony culminates withthe bride and groom entering a secluded room (cheder yichudin Hebrew) to spend time alone with each other. Yom Kippurculminates with the Ne'ilah, or closure prayer, so called be-cause as the sun of Yom Kippur sets, the gates of heavenclose--with us inside.

During Ne'ilah, every soul is alone with G-d.

The Celebration

When the bride and groom exit their private room, the partybegins. From Yom Kippur we leap into the seven-day festivalof Sukkot, described in the Torah as "the time of our Joy."

These days are filled with feasting and ecstatic happiness, celebrating the union between G-d and His people.

Union

The wedding feast is over. The guests and relatives have re-turned home. In a consummation of the relationship, brideand groom experience intimacy for the first time, their livesmelded together as a husband and wife.

Hence, following the seven days of Sukkot, we reach the

zenith of the High Holiday season: Shemini Atzeret and Sim-chat Torah, described in the Kabbalah as the "time of inti-macy with the Divine." During these two charged days thejoy reaches its peak, as G-d and His people merge into aseamless whole. A Divine seed is planted in each of ourhearts.

That's why we recite special prayers for rain on the festivalof Shemini Atzeret. What is rain? In the midst of intimacybetween heaven and earth, procreative drops from heaven areabsorbed, fertilized and nurtured by mother-earth, which intime will give birth to its botanical children.

The Ordinary Month

The honeymoon comes to an end and the excitement beginsto fade. Now the marriage becomes about caring for eachother and demonstrating trust and loyalty as we work throughthe daily grind of life.

Out of the twelve months in the Jewish calendar, the onlyone lacking a single festive day immediately follows the HighHoliday season. The Hebrew month of Cheshvan is the timeto build a genuine relationship with our marriage Partner inour everyday lives. This is the time to discover the joy bornout of a continous relationship with G-d.
