COLLEGE STARTS NOW

Welcome to Loyola!

Congratulations on choosing Loyola University Chicago. The next four years are going to be some of the most memorable and transformative years of your life.

Your time in the classroom, on campus, in the city, or at our Retreat and Ecology Campus will give you a deeper understanding of yourself and the world. In all of these places, you will explore social justice issues. And your understanding of these issues will grow through activities such as alternative break immersion trips, service learning, and learning communities.

As you embark on this new journey, I encourage you to take advantage of the many programs and opportunities available here at Loyola. This booklet will help prepare you for the first step in your Loyola Experience this summer, starting at Orientation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you start this exciting journey. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in the fall.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Garanzini, S.J. President and CEO

What is Orientation? It will be the start of your unique Loyola Experience. At Orientation, you will learn about academics, extracurricular activities, and support systems on campus to help you get the most out of your time here. You will also build community by making new friends and meeting with faculty and staff.

When does it take place?Orientations occur on the following dates. Please note that students are required to stay on campus for this 2-day overnight orientation program.

What if I can’t make it during the summer? Then join us for orientation on August 20–21! You’ll complete your class registration online in July (more information will follow) and will move into your assigned room on August 19. Non-residential students will commute to and from campus during orientation and on-campus housing for parents will not be available. If you come to this session, complete your placement tests by May 18.

How do I sign up?The deadline to register for orientation is May 31. Registration is available now on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up online at LUC.edu/orientation. Orientation is mandatory for all new students. If you need assistance, contact the Orientation Hotline at 773.508.7410.

Who should come with me?Your parents! Parents follow a different schedule of sessions that focus on how they can help you be successful in college. On-campus lodging for parents is available at a minimal cost, or parents can elect to find their own lodging at a hotel with a Loyola discount. Information on lodging can be found at LUC.edu/orientation.

What should I bring? If you have not yet submitted these items please plan to bring: your final high school transcript, proof of immunizations, and AP/IB Scores. You can also learn about what to pack at LUC.edu/orientation.

Where will I stay? All students will stay overnight in one of Loyola’s residence halls. Even if you will be a commuter student, this is a great way to make connections and learn more about campus.

What if I have questions? Find a detailed schedule of events, a packing list, off-campus housing options for parents, and lots of other details at LUC.edu/orientation. Please contact us at 773.508.7410 or [email protected] with any additional questions.

LEAD WITH VALUES

Ignatius of Loyola is the patron saint of the University—and his global vision for leadership will shape your Loyola Experience. Service, which challenges you to contribute your talents to build up the community, will help you grow as a leader. Cura personalis, or “care of the whole

person,” is a foundational value shared by all Ramblers. At Orientation, you’ll learn more about Start the Fire Retreats, the Leadership Development Program, and other opportunities to develop as a leader.

NEXT STEPS THIS SUMMER

Summer reading

Reading the First-Year Text will launch your Loyola Experience and initiate you into our community of learners.

This summer, you will prepare to par-ticipate in New Student Convocationon August 22 by reading the accom-panying First-Year Text, Tattoos on the Heart by Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J. This is the time to take responsibility for your own learning—one of the keys to success at Loyola. At Convocation, you will hear your first academic lecture and then meet with a faculty member for a small group discussion.

One of the foundations of a Loyolaeducation is reflection. We encourageyou to share your reflections onTattoos on the Heart by participating in the First-Year Essay Contest. Essays are due September 15, but can be submit-ted any time at LUC.edu/firstessay. The winner will receive a scholarship to pay for spring semester books.

Throughout the year, the “C in C,” or Communities in Conversation, events will give you the opportunity to learn from community leaders, faculty members, alumni, and classmates. This series will expand on the themes of Tattoos on the Heart, such as urban challenges and solutions, and social justice.

Find out more about the First-YearText at LUC.edu/fye.
