This yearly activity, performed by a professional theatre group, provided the community with quality entertainment for a fraction of the price that a theatre would have to charge. This year’s panto was a big success with over 80 people from Arbury and King’s Hedges turning up to watch. As in previous years, food and drinks were supplied for the children, who - equipped with their snack bags - entered the hall to be wowed by the colourful and brightly lit set prepared by the Chaplin’s Panto team. For the next 90 minutes both adults and children were entertained by a professional show from a cast that really connected with the children. The Pantomime is always very well attended and welcomed by the community and the feedback received has been extremely positive. Feedback from parents and children after the show was very good, saying it was “really professional” and “great fun for the whole family”.The children clearly enjoyed the experience this year and promised to be back next year for another incredible performance. One member of the community said this year: “I have seen 17 pantos during my life in the community and this one has been the best”. It has been a good year for the NCCP and this is largely due to you, the community for attending the activities we organised and for taking part and contributing ideas and suggestions on how to improve the activities the NCCP delivers. It is also good to know that,

after the merger of the KHNP and the Arbury NCP into one organisation, we now have a highly skilled and qualified management committee team, with the capability to deliver projects the community needs. As a result of this, we are very happy with the success of some of the activities and initiatives we ran this year. One good example of these is the 17th Pantomime, Aladdin (see the separate article). The Christmas tree event on the 12th of December 2017, was also a very rewarding and interesting experience. The Christmas lights were turned on by Cllr George Pippas, Mayor of Cambridge and these are his comments about the event: “Thank you for inviting us to your Christmas light switching ceremony. It was a very moving service, we were delighted by the children’s songs and I was very impressed by the high level of community spirit and huge numbers participating at that service. The event was very successful and that was confirmed to me not only by the local people I chatted to but also by people from the villages North of Cambridge which I met there, who came specifically for this event. Well done to the organizers and thank you once again for inviting me and my Sergeant at Mace.”Another project worth mention is the ‘Gardening Club’, which welcomes families in our local community to come along on the second Saturday of each month to plant fruit and vegetables in our community garden. This family gardening project seeks to provide participants with useful skills and at the same time to learn about the names and characteristics of fruit and plants grown. So there was plenty to celebrate in 2017 but there is still a journey ahead of us as we aim to incorporate all your feedback and try to improve what we seek to deliver in 2018. We would like to thank you for your commitment and support and for making us feel proud of our community. Please visit our website, at: http://www.nccp.org.uk to find out more about local events, facilities, amenities, opportunities, support networks and more. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to volunteer. If you would like to you can take a more active role by helping us to run some of our projects. As a non-profit organisation we rely entirely on the goodwill and support of the people and businesses in our community, so if you would like to be more involved, please visit: http://www.nccp.org.uk/get-involved/Alternatively if you have any questions or wishes to find out more about the NCCP mission and vision, please email us at: talk@nccp/.org.uk Find us on face book www.facebook.com/northcambridgecommuitypartnershipBest wishes for 2018,Ricardo Arbelaez Chair, NCCP

A CB4 Community Tapestry Arts Project Leader Julie Taylor

The aim of this year long project was to create a large scale tapestry artwork designed and woven by the local community and groups through classes, open days and primary school visits to go on public display in Arbury when completed. With the support of a Cambridge County Council grant and voluntary supporters this project was open to all and free for participants as were materials and equipment (donated by weaversbazaar.com, loom by Ricardo Arbelaez). The North Cambridge Community Partnership provided further help with a venue to hold our workshops. In total 165 hours of free tuition were delivered weekly for 55 weeks and a term of school art and craft were given at The Grove Primary School CB4. It has taken 8 months and more than 500 working hours to complete the piece. Over 200 People attended or visited the project at public events such as the Arbury Carnival at the Community Centre and the Easter Activities at Nun’s Way Pavilion and the summer activity open days at the Church of the Good Shepherd CB4. Classes were given at 37 Lawrence Way from Oct 2016 to March 2017. From April 2017 the large scale work was started and was completed in Dec 2017.There has been a lot of local interest and BBC Cambridgeshire radio and the Cambridge News have given us interviews and coverage. We were also invited to contribute to the Kettle’s Yard ‘Open House’ event with artist in residence Harold Offeh. We have a large national (and international!) following on facebook and twitter. We also had a 3rd year textile student from Bath University visit us to research textile community arts in action.A public unveiling of the finished piece took place just before Christmas at the Church of The Good Shepherd with the help of the Deputy Mayor and local MP Daniel Ziechner and the children from the Grove Primary School. Lots of people were there to help us celebrate this fantastic achievement and to see this wonderful artwork in it’s entirety for the first time. The legacy of the project has been friendships made, the coming together of all ages and abilities and the sense of creative purpose within our locality. The finished tapestry will be going ‘on tour’ in public buildings in the Arbury area so look out for it in local libraries, schools and community centres. Due to lots of enthusiasm and popular demand the project is going to continue into it’s second year. We have some great ideas for a future design and can’t wait to get started! If you would like to find out more about our next weaving adventures then email: [email protected] or like our @makeweaves fb page.

SPRING 2018

eL Seed mural at Arbury Court eL Seed is an internationally renowned artist who has been invited by Kettle’s Yard to create a new artwork at Arbury Court as part of the gallery’s reopening exhibition, Actions. The image of the world can be different. eL Seed uses street art to promote peace and unity and to celebrate diverse culture in ambitious projects all over the world. eL Seed makes dramatic and colourful murals in a style he calls “calligraffiti”, which is a blend of the ancient art form of calligraphy with elements of classic ‘Wildstyle’ and contemporary graffiti. His beautiful murals often feature sections of inspirational texts in Arabic script, as one of his goals is to challenge preconceptions of Arabic culture.

The artist says: ‘Bringing people, future generations, together through Arabic calligraphy is what I do. Writing messages is the essence of my artwork. What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people really need to focus a lot to decipher what I’m writing. You don’t need to know the meaning to feel the piece. I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes. There is a beauty in it that you don’t need to translate.’ Kettle’s Yard has been working in creative collaboration with our local community in North Cambridge on our Open House programme during the gallery’s period of redevelopment. We are delighted that the Open House programme will continue into the future.

Kettle’s Yard will be hosting a series of events and art workshops inspired by eL Seed’s work locally. Further information is available on our Open House social media sites.

Additional information about eL Seed, his new work and Kettle’s Yard can be found both at Kettle’s Yard and a temporary display at Arbury Court Library during Action. The image of the world can be different from 10th February – 6th May 2018. Actions includes 38 artists and explores what art can do as a force in the world. The exhibition will take place at Kettle’s Yard, online and around Cambridge. There will be live events, talks, discussions and activities. The exhibition is free to visit and many of the activities are also free.

A NEW energy advice service has been launched to help Cambridge residents cut household bills and keep their homes warm this winter.

‘Winter Warmth’ has seen Cambridge City Council team up with environmental charity PECT, to provide residents with access to free household energy advice.

How can we help? Cambridge residents can book to receive a free home energy advice visit from an impartial and friendly advisor – including a free goodie bag! Winter Warmth provides households with the information and resources needed to stay warm and healthy, whilst cutting costs and carbon.

The service aims to offer help and advice on behavioural changes, choosing the best energy tariff and supplier, managing your water bills, and where eligible can assist you to access the national £140 Warm Home Discount, Cambridgeshire Home Improvements Agency and other funding opportunities.

Why get involved? There is substantial evidence that shows the detrimental impact cold homes can have on the physical and mental wellbeing of UK residents. NHS advice* suggests that when the weather drops below 8°C, some people are at increased risk of certain health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, pneumonia and depression. *www.nhs.uk/Livewell/winterhealth/Pages/KeepWarmKeepWell.aspx

Arbury Carnival Saturday 9 June 2018The 2017 (40th anniversary) carnival saw the community celebrate in great style with a glorious summer day, record stall bookings and attendance, a fantastic carnival procession, non- stop arena events and, for the first time an evening concert. A big thank you to all those that took part and a BIG thank you to the organising committee who worked so hard to put the event together.

In November we held an open meeting to encourage local people to come forward to help form the organising committee for the 2018 carnival. I am pleased to tell you that we now have a great mix of new and old committee members who have already started planning this year’s carnival. We are looking at including another evening concert as it proved so popular.

If you had a stall last year you will automatically be sent one for this year at the end of January. New stall holders will be able to download a form from our website at the end of January.

SPRING 2018

Arbury Court Library presents two fantastic events chosen by the Library Friends as part of ‘The Library Presents…Arts Alive’, a programme that brings arts events

to libraries across Cambridgeshire.

“Brilliant to have creative events on our doorstep”“It was amazingly presented and great experience.”

Said audiences who attended events in the Autumn Season.

On Thursday 15 February, the library will be transformed into a performance space for ‘Scoop Magic’, who has performed for The Magic Circle, combining conjuring with comedy, juggling and a dash of danger. The stage will be set for an unforgettable experience for young and old alike. “I can’t remember the last time I laughed as much, your show was amazing” – Rachel Jones, Ocean Edge Holiday Park

For Children aged 5-8yrs ‘Library Bugs Adventure Drama Class’ is the perfect taster where children can grow in confidence. Beginning on Saturday 17 February, this series of six sessions (1 hour each) is packed full of songs, dance, drama and games and based on the magical stories by author David Walliams. They will become Gangsta Grannies, Demon Dentists, Slightly Annoying Elephants and more.

The programme is funded by Arts Council England, run by Cambridgeshire County Council in partnership with Babylon ARTS, and supported by volunteers from the local area. Book tickets now and find the full programme at Arbury Court Library and in the nine other participating libraries at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/arts

Winter can give the impression that everything is sleeping or just plain inactive but, in truth there is lots of activity in nature throughout the year.

In gardens there are plants flowering in January – snowdrops are well known for this and we have nationally acclaimed gardens, famous for their winter gardens not far away at Anglesey Abbey. The pretty pink flowers of Cyclamen coum, the pale blue flowers of Iris stylosa and pink winter-flowering cherry along with bright yellow winter jasmine brighten gardens around us in Kings Hedges and Arbury.

In the hedgerows and along our roads, trees are coming into flower.

The most obvious are the Hazels with their long, yellow catkins. However, Alder trees and Silver birches are also beginning to show their catkins too.

Swallows and swifts and other summer visitors may not be here but winter thrushes and other winter migrants are evident near us and nearby in Milton Park there are wintering ducks and larger numbers of coots. Many Starlings seen now are visitors from Europe and their spectacular murmurations may be seen in the Cambridge area. In recent times I have seen them at Fen Drayton Lakes but they do move around to different locations. Locally, our most colourful thrush, the Fieldfare can sometimes be seen feeding on berries in the hedgerows along with Redwings, they can also sometimes be seen feeding on open green spaces such as the green alongside the Arbury Community Centre.

Gull roosts are also at their peak during the winter. Amongst the gulls resting in the fields near the recycling centre on Butt Lane there are occasional rarities such as Iceland gulls and Caspian gulls along with the five common species. Slightly further afield, there has been an irruption of Hawfinches this year and a handful of these large finches has been present around the car park at Wimpole Hall.

Insects are less evident but you can be sure that ants are hibernating under the grass and some butterflies will have found shelter in cool, frost free spots, perhaps in sheds and may venture out on warm days. Unseasonal appearances can surprise us. We had a bumble bee in our garden in the second week of January with its baskets full of pollen. Most surprising for me was seeing a bat flying in the middle of the day on Jesus Common in the third week of January and earlier this winter a male Blackcap (normally a summer visiting bird) made a brief appearance in our garden.

So, although it may be that the most severe bit of winter has yet to come, nature continues to prepare for spring and there is a lot to see and enjoy. Already by the middle of January Song Thrushes are joining the Robins in early morning song. So, get your walking shoes or boots on and get whatever light you can. Spring will soon be here!
