Music Curriculum
Music on Tuesdays
Julie F. Troum, Music Specialist “Teach music to the child and you give the soul a voice.” - Artist, Julia Veland
Music Instructor, Julie Troum, Unloads Newly Arrived Instruments Purchased for the Annual Fund
Annual Fund Triples the Number of Xylophones for Use in the Music Classroom
The elementary students were delighted at the sight of the new instruments that arrived in February. Doubling students on each instrument is no longer as necessary to accommodate students’ performances during music class. Some other new sounds have arrived, such as the gong and temple blocks. As a result, setting music to a story now has an added sound element. A Xylophone Summer Camp is being organized for LMMA summer camp during the first weeks of June to increase performance skills.
Japan Unit
Elementary faculty, in anticipation of the Monday, May 3rd musical performance at 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Mary Events Center, has begun to integrate the curriculum in an effort to connect with Japan throughout subjects outside of music class. Studying the cul-tural background of the songs being sung in music class encourages meaningful and motivational learning. Students will be making their own kimonos and cherry blossom branches to use in the cherry blossom parade that is planned for the musical performance.
Parts for the instrumental and dramatic roles in the Japanese folktale, Three Strong Women, have been cast. The Barry classroom will be primarily providing the acting roles whereas the music and dance parts will be assigned to the DaVinci and Van Gogh class-rooms. Scripts for the folktale have been sent home with those in the Barry classroom. Running lines with family, outside of school, is always a big help.
Elementary students are all expected to have sandals or flip-flops for use during the musical event. Student arrival (call time) will be at 6:00 p.m. at the Lake Mary Events Center. Any primary or elementary student who studies the Suzuki method is encouraged to perform between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. prior to the performance
.

LMMA’s School Illness Policy
Cold and Flu Season: Since antibiotics work only against
bacteria and never against viruses, they have no effect on
colds, flu, bronchitis and most sore throats. Therefore, if
your child does not look or feel well, our policy is for them to
stay home until symptoms are completely gone. They will
then be allowed to return to school. Remember to have your
child wash his /her hands regularly. Rest at home is still the
best medicine.
School Illness Policy: For your child’s welfare and that of
the other children and teachers, no child will be allowed in
school with the following symptoms or illnesses:
• Yellow/green nasal discharge
• Cough
• Fever (100 degrees or over); the child must stay at
home for 2 days
• Diarrhea or loose bowels
• Vomiting
• Contagious illness (conjunctivitis, flu, chicken pox, impe-
tigo)
• Pinworms or head lice (until treatment is performed and
all nits are removed)
A doctor’s note may be required to admit the child back into
school for certain illnesses.

Upper Elementary Quilting
Sheila donated her Aunt Maureen's sewing machine to serve as a memorial to her.
Students in the Barry classroom are learning to sew. A parent is working with the stu-dents on Friday mornings as they learn the art of quilting. Each student has had the op-portunity to have an individual sewing lesson, then put a block of nine quilt pieces to-gether. When the quilt is finished, it will have 180 squares and will measure about 40 inches by 60 inches. The students will be writing notes of support and thanks to the soldier that the quilt is going to.
The quilt will go to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where a Red Cross Volunteer will give it to a soldier who has come home injured from Iraq. Sewing groups and individuals from all over the US are participating in this project.
To see a video about quilts for injured soldiers, please go to this link:
