the PlastiC Brain – series oF 4 WorkshoPs

Research in the past few years has turned upside down earlier views of how our amazing brains operate. Some of the most important events of everyday life - forming habits, feeling pain, recovering from a stroke and dealing with stress and anxiety - the “plastic brain” has a story to tell that we don’t want to miss. Register for one or all four workshops.

(Un) Healthy Habits and Brain Plasticity Learn what science says about willpower, brainpower and practice.

Does competitive plasticity get in the way of breaking or making habits? Can “rapid unlearning techniques” work for you? How long does it re-ally take to break habits? Where do you fit on the forgetting curve? Join us to find out.

52926 M Oct 17 6:30pm – 8:30pm 1/$20

Your Brain on Pain We look at topics such as: how pain changes the plastic brain, what

research says about redefining pain, the surprising causes and effects of pain, how the brain gets “hijacked”, when it IS all in your head, un-usual techniques employed to counter pain, and more.

53297 M Oct 24 6:30pm – 8:30pm 1/$20

The Plastic Brain and Stroke Recovery Join us to consider these powerful ideas (and more): What is the

plastic brain’s way of healing? What are the recovery curves? How does having a cup of tea with a friend help? Learn how music, visualization and other therapies aid recovery.

52939 M Oct 31 2pm – 4pm 1/$20

Stress, Anxiety & Distractedness (SAD) - the Battle The SAD three have been labelled: “the nasties”. Don’t despair.

Knowledge is power. Research suggests brain plasticity is your ally. Harness diet changes plus a huge array of therapies. Selective, smart learning can be called on - for instance, knowing how velcro and teflon thoughts operate. Join us to find out.

An update from your Community Resource Officersby Cst Kathi Brown and Cst Allison Johnson

Did you know that the Vicpd offers a bike registry program? Bike theft is one of the most common property crimes in our community.

It is frustrating for riders who often stand to lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars’ worth of their property. And, in communities as bike-friendly as Victoria and Esquimalt, the theft of someone’s bike is often the theft of that person’s prime mode of transportation.

That’s why we launched the new VicPD Bike Registry, to help combat bike theft in the capital region – and why hundreds of bikes have been registered since the registry was launched in July 2015.

The VicPD Bike Registry helps officers reunite found or seized bikes with their rightful owners. For example, from January to June 2015, we received 335 reports of stolen bikes and have, so far, returned 120 of them to their rightful owners. We’ve also found 180 bikes that were not reported missing to us. Of these, we’ve been able to return about a quarter of them.

HOW tO reGiSter yOUr Bike

• Registering your bike takes a couple of minutes and must be done in person.

• Simply visit the Vicpd.ca website and download and fill out the form with your contact information, bike serial number and description.

• Fill out the form at community events or at VicPD Headquarters at 850 Caledonia Ave or the Esquimalt Public Safety Building.

• Once your bike is registered, officers will be able to gather all the par-ticulars of your bike when we recover it, and get it back to you.

By registering your bike, you also make it much easier for officers to estab-lish that it is stolen when checking a person riding it without your permission. This will help streamline the process and will help us get your bike back to you so you can get riding again.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]

Own Your BlockVictoria Together Against Graffiti (VTAG) has launched a new initiative in

partnership with TELUS. Paint-out kits are now available and commu-nity members are invited to “Own the Block” by picking up a kit and painting out the BC Hydro poles in their neighbourhood with the appropriate colour pallet.

The kits themselves contain 2 quart size cans of paint, gloves, stir stick, scraper, opener, and a 3.5 inch brush. They are much easier and lighter to carry than your standard gallon bucket, and the goal is to simply paint over a tag on a telephone pole in the same colour as the pole itself:

• Green for pressure treated poles

• Beige for newer non pressure treated poles

• Dark Brown for older creosote poles

• Gray for concrete poles

If you are interested in participating in this program and Owning Your Block, please contact Rachel O’Neill at the Burnside Gorge Commu-nity Association, 250-388-5251.
