t is ICON 2.5CS"?

ICON® 2.5CS IS an Innovative wa ter-based formulation of lambda

cyhalothrin ut ilising state-of -the -art micro-encapsulation technology

ICON 2.5CS IS designed for the t reatment of bednets, curtams and

tents made of various fabrics (eg. co tton, nylon, polyester). Bednels

treated w ith ICON 2.5CS remain effec t ive aqar nst mosquitoes for

up to a year post t reatment and typically w ithstand 5 washes

before requiring re-treatment When used properly, nets treated w ith

ICON 2.5CS provide Invaluable personal protect ion against risks of

disease t ransrniss.on by mosquitoes and othe r bitin g Insects. Because

the treated nets kill so many of t he vector mosquitoes, the who le

community can benefi t.

Mo rbidi ty and death from malaria ISreduced whe n people sleep under

pyrethroid-tr eated bednets. For examp le, child mortality rates fe ll by

17% In Ghana (Blnka et at. 1996), by 33% In Kenya (Neville et at

1996), by 50% in Sierra Leone (Ma rbiah et at. 1998) and over 60% In

The Gambia (Alonso et at 1991) w hen people slept under pyrethr oid

Impregnated mosquito nets at nigh t.

'The lives of some 500,000 young African children might be saved

from malana every year if bednets, treated with biodegradable

pyreth roid Insecticides, were widely and properly used" (TOR News No

50, June 1996).

Active ingredient: lambda-cyhalothrin

synthet ic pyreth roid Insecticid e of t he highest potency, Invented and developed by Syngenta

effec tive at exceptionally low application rates

ICON 2.5CS has been successfu lly evaluated by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) for t reatment of mosquito nets for

malaria prevent ion and control

ICON 2.5CS has been manufactured In accordance With WHO Specilicat ion 4631CS2003. Details are available In the we bsite, wwwwho.mtlwh opes

registered and used In over 100 countries wo rld-Wide

MAIN BENEFITS OF ICON 2.5 CS

• long-lasting effect from a single treatment

• Proven protection against malaria

• Versatile - works on all fabric types (natural & synthetic)

• ~ithstands washing

• Kills mosquitoes in addition to repelling them

• Effective against all types of mosquito ti.e. Anopheles, Culex & Aedes etc.)

• Odourless treatment

• low mammal ian toxicity - carries a "green" colour band according to WHO classification.

• Easy and safe to handle in convenient packaging.

• Also controls nuisance insects such as bed-bugs, head-lice, ticks and houseflies.

Technical data

Formulation: ICON 2.5C5

contain s 25 grams of lambda-cyhalothnn per litre

water-based formu lation : low odou r and non-f lammable

advanced capsule suspension:

• the gradual release of the active ingredient prolongs the residual efficacy for many months on all fab ric types

• the micro-capsule formulation protects the active ingredient on treated fabric so that ICON 2.5CS w ithstands washing

• encapsulation reduces mammalian toxicity and irritancy (compared w ith EC fo rmulat ions) but retains excellent insect icidal act ivity

proven efficacy under demandi ng tropical f ield cond it ions

Rate

It ISrecommended that ICON 2.5CS be applied at 10-1 5 mg active ingredient per square met re of netti ng.

Efficacy After 15 months dom estic use In Ta nzania, nets treat ed with ICON 2.sCS (10 mg ailm 2) were still more effective against A. gambiae than ot her pyrethroids compared in fie ld trials. ICON 2.5CS also

demon strated bett er wash resistance compared wi th deltamethrin

SC and etofenprox EC (Taken from Curtis et al. 1996).

A f ield trial carried out in Apayo Province of the Philippi nes In 1995, demo nstrated that mosquito nets treated w ith ICON 2.5CS at 10 mg al/m 2 prevented the rise of malaria during a high transmission season (P fafciparum Infect ion rates were signif icantly

lower than in the control area), and reduced malaria prevalence during a low tr ansmission season (Quilala et et. 1996).

Washfastness ICON 2.5CS treated polyester nett ing remained highly effective

after washing in t he fie ld (Vythilingham et af 1999).
