A Message from Margie Adelmann, CEOJewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg
At our December Board meeting, we dedicated most of our discussion
to membership. We asked ourselves to imagine what membership success
might look like at our JCC, what sustainable membership scenarios are
and what our collective vision for the future is as it relates to membership.
These are thought-provoking questions that launched a lively conversation
where trustees shared their perceptions, asked for information, made
suggestions, and challenged us to think outside of the box.
One of the comments that was repeatedly shared was that it’s very clear
we are a Community Center. Parents with children shared that their kids
can't wait to get in the doors when they arrive here, even if they were
here for childcare in our Early Learning Center during the week or when
they come for a Sunday morning program, they "run" down the hall to
see their friends. And trust me, if you are at the J at 4 when the Aftercare
kids arrive, step aside, they too are "running down the hall" no matter
how many times Terry Fisher reminds them to "walk" to see their friends.
At the meeting, many shared that when you join the J you become
part of our family. You join a community. A Center that among its many
offerings has a Fitness Center. A Center that in the past couple of months
offered an acclaimed author, Tony-nominated composers, Sip and Paint
programming, Character breakfast, Dancing with our Community Stars,
Chanukah party with rock band, Flag Football, basketball programming,
flu shots, blood drive, educational programming about domestic violence
and so much more! And most of these programs were offered at no or low
cost to JCC members.
Shortly after the meeting during a tour, the guests remarked to me over
and over, "we had no idea." Following their visit, I received an email that
said "we were amazed at the breadth and depth of the JCC's community
endeavors."
The discussion at the Board meeting was just the beginning. We will
be working with volunteers and staff to explore the questions posed and
gather the information requested. We will begin to make some immediate
changes. For example, our atrium will be painted the week of December
29th to give us a fresh look. We want to make a good first impression
when you enter the Center! And we want you to have the best experience
every time you come to the JCC!
Wouldn't it be great if everyone who came through our doors shared
the enthusiasm of the children who run through our hallways so excited
to see their friends and get to their program?
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year!

The MOST Fun Class!By Lillian Rappaport
Normally, when I write something for the Community Review, it’s about education or Holocaust - certainly topics that are serious in nature. But this little article is different. I want to write about something that is fun, terrific, a great time---and even good for you!
On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30, please join us in the pool for an hour’s worth of Aqua Zumba. You’ll find a great bunch of (mostly) gals jumping, jogging, kicking and stretching to salsa music. I don’t know how it happens, but between our wonderful instructor, Bev Sable, and the Aqua Zumba gals, we spend so much time laughing that we actually forget we’re doing something good for our bodies. As a former chronic morning “dawdler,” I’ve changed my ways and rarely miss a class. And by 9:30, I’ve finished my exercise for the day, feel terrific both in mind and body, and am not even too late for work!
So, if you’re looking for an amazing way to start your day, come to the pool and join us for Aqua Zumba. I promise you that you’ll be glad you did!
BBYO is the leading teen led Jewish Youth Movement in the world. On November 14- 16, Harrisburg BBYO sent 26 teens to Liberty Region’s 2nd Tournies Convention in Allentown, PA. For those who do not know what Tournies is, it is a BBYO convention where we show chapter spirit and compete in everything from chess to basketball, and even photography. This year, Harrisburg BBYO was considered a medium-sized chapter, and did very well. We achieved 3rd in corn hole, 1st in duet singing, 3rd in storytelling, 3rd in doubles Ping-Pong, 2nd in panel discussion, 2nd in volleyball, 1st in BBG basketball, 2nd in AZA basketball, 1st in the cheer/song, and 2nd in photography.
On Friday the 14th, we departed from the JCC ready to bring home a trophy. That night, we participated in a teen-led Shabbat Service and opening ceremonies. Saturday was the bulk of the convention, where we competed in all of our events. On Sunday, we finished up a few competitions and went to the closing rituals. Finally, we said our goodbyes and boarded the bus to go back to Harrisburg.
This Tournies we set the record for largest convention in our region’s history; 290 teens were there! Even though we did not win, many teens in our chapter who have never been to a convention attended, and loved it. We hope to see our chapter and region grow as we progress into the year.
If you are interested in joining BBYO feel free to contact Parker Forman at (717-829- 5074) or Paula Rosen at (717-903-5631).

By Leslie Rutter BA, MS Resource Family Coordinator at Jewish Family ServiceDo you have space in your home and your heart to care for an older child or a sibling group? Can you provide
a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for child who needs a family? If so, then becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent might be for you. Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg is actively recruiting foster and adoptive families for older children and sibling groups in the care of a county Children and Youth agency. We have also been asked by local agencies to recruit foster parents who may be able to provide a safe and temporary home for Jewish children, while taking into account the child’s cultural needs. Dauphin County is a highly diverse community and children from all races need a home. Children in foster care have the same basic needs as all children do-food, clothing, shelter, etc. Beyond that, foster children need safety, security, and a sense of belonging.
So how do you, as a foster and adoptive parent, help a child attain these? There are numerous characteristics of successful foster and adoptive families. Some of these include having a good sense of humor, being able to tolerate a child’s negative feelings, and not having predetermined expectations. Families must be able to be flex-ible and cope with rejection, be able to provide structure, know how to use resources and ask for support, and parents must be able to meet their own personal needs. Successful families also must be comfortable with the fact that they may make mistakes; just as every child is not perfect, every parent is not either. Above all, families need to be committed and be full of affection.
If you feel like you have many of these qualities and have room in your home and heart, please call Leslie Rutter, Resource Family Coordinator, at 233-1681. Call us if you have questions about the process of becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent; we are happy to meet with you in person also.
Foster and Adoptive Families Needed

A Chanukah Letter to Students --and the Rest of UsBy Rabbi Akiva Males
Each year at this time, Ricki Gold leads Kesher Israel Congregation’s effort in sending out Chanukah Care Packages to our college students. This is a beautiful project that our Shul is proud to carry out. Over the years, many students have told me how much these care packages have meant to them. I am always happy to write a short holiday letter to be included in the package.
After writing my letter for this year’s Chanukah package, it struck me that while my message was written for KI’s college students, the larger community might appreciate the letter below as well.
Wishing you a wonderful Chanukah, Rabbi Akiva Males
Chanukah 5775 / 2014 Dear KI students,I hope you’re well and enjoying your studies. It’s to believe, but Chanukah
is here already! Over the past years, many of KI’s students have e-mailed me to let me know how much they’ve enjoyed receiving our Chanukah care packages – like the one you’re holding in your hands right now.
Well you spoke, and KI listened! We figured that if receiving a little bit of love from KI can lift the day of college students – already enjoying the creature comforts we take for granted – such a gesture would mean even more for active-duty Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldiers.
This Chanukah, through KI’s Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, Kesher Israel Congregation partnered with www.pizzaidf.org to send special jelly doughnuts (Sufganiyot) to an entire company (80- 90 infantry soldiers) of an active-duty IDF unit. I’m certain that receiving warm
Chanukah greetings – and a tasty treat – from our congregation in far-away Central Pennsylvania will lift those soldiers’ spirits.
On behalf of KI, I thank you for helping us come up with one more way to let the brave young men/women of the IDF know how much we appreciate them.
Together with all of KI, Layala and I wish you a wonderful Chanukah!Sincerely, Rabbi Akiva Males

BAR MITZVAH – Joseph Caplan
Joseph Caplan will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat Vayechi, January 3, 2015, at Beth El Temple. Joseph is a 7th-grade Honor Roll student at Linglestown Middle School, where he serves on the Student Council. He has a wide variety of interests. He plays the clarinet and alto saxophone in the school band, jazz band, and District Honors Band; he will soon audition for the Dauphin County Band. He also plays the piano and guitar, and has sung in several choral groups.
Joseph has won many prizes for his work in school science fairs, spelling bees, and art contests. He plays basketball on the JCC's Middle School team, and played on the Junior Maccabi team for three years. Joseph's favorite sport is baseball, which he has played almost year 'round since he was six years old. In his free time, Joseph enjoys reading sports novels and biographies; watching sporting events live and on television; going to camp; traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
For his Bar Mitzvah project, Joseph held an equipment drive for Pitch in for Baseball, an organization that collects donated baseball gear and distributes it to needy kids and leagues across the country and around the world. He also spent several hours volunteering in the warehouse, helping to sort these items and prepare them for shipping.
Joseph's proud parents are Helene and Morris Caplan. We look forward to sharing this very special day with grandparents Barbara and Bernie Moses of Peekskill, NY, and Enid Caplan of Penn Valley, PA., and many friends and relatives from near and far.
