THE YELLOW BEETLE CHALLENGEThe Yellow Beetle Challenge is a local fundraising initiative, led by Mike Shattock. Mike’s wife, Samantha, suffered a cardiac arrest at the age of 41 and as a result of her heart stopping for over forty minutes, Samantha was left with a severe hypoxic brain injury. After time at Peterborough and Lincoln hospitals, Samantha is now cared for at The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) in Putney, SW London.

The Yellow Bettle challenge was named as such, as Samantha was known locally in her yellow VW Bettle. The initial challenge was to raise £10,000 for the RHN, through a series of fundraising and awareness raising events. Through all of the support and donations, this target has now been extended to £25,000. In April this year, Mike and his team of fellow challengers completed a London to Paris Cycle ride, on fixed wheel bikes (so with no gears and no freewheeling). Recently, the team completed the New York Marathon, and whilst Mike is more at home on a bike than on two feet running 26 miles, he completed the marathon in 5 hours and 12 minutes.

The fundraising total to date is almost £23,000, with recent support from Linford’s Fish & Chip of Market Deeping helping to edge the total raised closer to the target.

In January 2012, Kilimanjaro is the setting for the final of the three big challenges laid down when fundraising began. With six days of walking, to the summit of the highest freestanding mountain in the world, the team will surely be motivated by support back home.To support the challenge: www.yellowbeetlechallenge.co.uk To make a donation: www.justgiving.com/yellowbeetlechallenge. NORTH SHOES SUPPORT HOPE AND AID DIRECTSHOE store owner James North is urging Stamford

people to help kick-start life for thousands of needy

children in one of the poorest areas of Europe.

For around ten years his customers in Bourne and

Peterborough have helped to make a real difference to

youngsters living in poverty in Kosovo with a simple idea

– and now he’s bringing it to Stamford through the North

Shoes store at 2 Red Lion Square.

Unwanted children’s shoes form part of humanitarian

aid convoys going to Kosovo twice a year through Essex-

based charity Hope and Aid Direct. James estimates his

customers have provided between 5,000 and 6,000 pairs

– and now he’s calling on Stamford people to join the effort.

Customers in Bourne and Peterborough have been brilliant

over the years and now with the store in Stamford, North

Shoes would love the people of Stamford to get behind it

too. When you visit the store, staff will take the old shoes

and pass them on to Hope and Aid Direct through the Rotary

Club of Peterborough Minster.

Shoes have a real impact on the lives of children whose

families were left in dire poverty after the 1998-99 Kosovon

War – and Hope and Aid Direct cannot get enough of them.

Co-founder Charles Storer says: “Imagine what your life

would be like without shoes. They are so fundamental –

but we cannot have too many for a country where millions

of people live in conditions we wouldn’t put our animals in.

“It may be 2011 and Kosovo is only two hours away by

plane, but 45% of the people there live in poverty in huts

and shacks. Quite simply the children do not have shoes.

In this country nearly every home has a car – in Kosovo

there’s barely one car per village so people have to walk

everywhere and without shoes children cannot go to school.

“If they go to school without shoes they are turned away

– and in spring, autumn and winter when it’s muddy they

have to take their shoes off and change into soft shoes,

otherwise the schools would get filthy. So, please give

plimsolls and trainers, too, as well as your children’s old

shoes – but please respect the pride of the people over

there and make sure the shoes are usable and not dirty

and worn out.”

You can find out more about the

work of Hope and Aid Direct and

LOCAL FIRM GETS THE MINI’S PASSING AGAINThe mini rugby

players at

Deepings RUFC

are now passing their own brand new training

balls thanks to local firm Devonports. The

kitchen & bathroom fitters based on Bridge

Street in Deeping St James now also proudly

display a Deepings Mini’s Match shirt in

their window, given to them by the team as a

thankyou for supplying the balls.

With recent vandalism at the rugby club the budget set

aside for training kit has had to be spent on essential

repairs, coaches Matt Jackson and Gary Payne of the

U7’s team were left with no balls to start training in

September. Using their initiative they were able to

borrow some balls initially until Devonports heard of

their plight and bought 12 new size three balls and nice

new bag to keep them all in!

The club has a very strong mini and junior section which

has expanded during and since the Rugby World Cup

last month there are spaces still in most of the teams

THANKS FOR LIFE PROJECTThe Rotary Club of the Deepings & Baston Primary School

prepared the ground recently for another flowering burst

of life in the continuing fight against Polio.

Gardening Club Pupils from the Baston Primary School have

started planting crocus bulbs, again this year, as part of the

Rotary ‘Thanks for Life’ Polio Eradication Campaign.

Monies are raised by Clubs purchasing the bulbs, in a national

scheme, set up last year, as part of Rotary`s fight against Polio.

The club are hosting the Grimsthorpe Colliery Band on Saturday

10 December at Deeping Leisure Centre. Tickets can still be

purchased from the Leisure Centre, the Spar Shop and Tinkers,

both on Godsey Lane, Market

Deeping. £16 each, including

a glass of wine and a mince

pie. Concert starts at 7pm.

IPHONE HEALTH WALKPatients at Peterborough City Hospital

will soon be able to enjoy a new

interactive health walk produced

for the ‘Walk Peterborough’ iPhone

app. The free app, developed

by green charity Peterborough

Environment City Trust (PECT),

is being updated with a new

walk around the hospital site, following funding from

Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice project.

Bretton residents and hospital staff helped PECT design the

one and a half mile health walk, which starts at Peterborough

City Hospital, and passes through local sites of interest and a

small woodland area.

Patients and visitors are being encouraged to take a break

from the hospital wards and grab a breath of fresh air, whilst

hospital staff can also stretch their legs during lunch break.

The walk is also intended for residents to enjoy and is available

for free to download from the iTunes App Store.

The app already features guided walks through Lynch Wood,

Stanground, Hampton and Woodston. There are various health

walks available aimed at improving fitness and a number

of nature walks designed to encourage learning about local

wildlife and history. The new walk includes both interesting

local knowledge and tips on walking for health, offering

something for everyone.

The Walk Peterborough iPhone App has received 1,145

downloads since its launch in 2010, and has a 4.5 star rating

on the App store.

TEAM ‘SAFE LOCAL TRADES’ RAISE £3,900 FOR AGE UK

PETERBOROUGH!Each year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year they took part in two events - a Tandem Skydive at Sibson Airfield on Sunday 2nd October and the Great Eastern Fun Run

on 9th October. Both events were an overall success and Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, who organised them said “we would like to thank all our skydivers and runners for taking part in helping to raise £3,900 for this very worthy cause, and to everyone who supported us by donating to our teams. It is a privilege to raise funds for Age UK – funds which help them to continue to deliver vital services to older people across Greater Peterborough.” Part of the team included an 82 year old granddad, Brian Jennings from Yaxley, who signed up for the charity tandem skydive and raised over £500 in the process. Eileen said: “I am so incredibly proud of Brian. He is inspirational and epitomises that you are never too old to do anything. Brian was so brave and we were blessed with a cloudless warm day on the 2nd October, which made everyones experience even more enjoyable.” David Bache, CEO of Age UK Peterborough said “We are absolutely delighted with this money and can’t thank Eileen and all the team enough. Without compassionate companies, such as safelocaltrades.com, we simply wouldn’t be able to provide the level of service that older people in Peterborough need so badly.”

The BaskervillesHotel, Bar and Restaurant

Head chef Carl Turner has created a very diverse and interesting menu with something to suit all tastes. With a large selection of starters, mains and desserts, the only problem you will have, if you are anything like me, is deciding what delights to have.

The Scene team headed to the Baskervilles for lunch last week to sample the great food and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. As we entered the restaurant we noticed all of the hard work the new owner had put in with the refurbishment and it had certainly paid off. The new decor was both tastefully done and the new lighting made a huge difference to the ambience.

After perusing the menu, it was not long before our mouths were watering and had chosen our starters and mains. We had Pate, Tempura Prawns, with the lightest batter I have had in a very long time, Pork Meat Balls and Fried Chicken Strips. We all loved the look of everyone’s dishes, so decided to eat then swap plates, so we could have a taste of each. The only criticism (if you can call it that) is that the portions were very large, although saying that, we had five totally clean plates. We had a small break between courses and enjoyed

a glass (or two) of the house wine, which went down very well. For our mains, we ordered a cross section of dishes - Vegetarian Thai Curry, Seabass, Lasagne (this came with hand cut chips, salad and garlic bread) and a delicious seafood platter, that was a dream dish for fish lovers as it included Prawns, Smoked Salmon, Whitebait, Crayfish and a salad served with chunky bread. The menu also included steaks, burgers, scampi, kangaroo (next time we are going to try this!), and more traditional dishes like gammon and fish and chips.

I couldn’t believe we ordered desserts, but it was for research purposes.... and someone has to do it!! So, once again, we ordered a selection so we could sample them. Oreo Cheesecake, Syrup Sponge, Chocolate Brownie, AND (would you believe) a Cheese Board. Once again our only issue was that they were huge - but everyone was absolutely delicious. The Brownie was warm and soft and really moist (not many Brownies have that consistency), the Cheesecake was light, creamy and had Maltesers on the top (a great touch). We had to take the Cheeseboard away with us as it was just too nice to leave, but room was running out.

i have to give the Baskervilles 8/10 for service and atmosphere, and 10/10 for food, price and value.

Embarrassed by your skin? There is a solution!Skin tags, facial thread veins, various warts, blood spots,

milk spots and unwanted facial hair are all deemed to be

unsightly skin blemishes that may affect your confidence

and wellbeing. All of which can be easily treated by an

electrolysis specialist. Unfortunately people are often

unaware that this service is available. As far back as the

early 1900’s, electrolysis was being used for the treatment

of unwanted hair and various skin lumps and bumps. Today

it has progressed a long way and with ongoing improvements

and modern technology it is a safe, comfortable and effective

treatment still very much in demand with the clients of today.

So if you have tried electrolysis in the past try it again with

an electrolysis specialist. Electrolysis still remains to be the

only proven method of permanent hair removal.

eTo help combat this, start your day off with a healthy breakfast, reducing the chances of an unhealthy Christmas food binge. Fitting in all of your regular meals, helps keep you on track and full, when you do face Christmas treats.

Christmas beverages can also add to the waistline but won’t completely derail a healthy diet. Balance these drinks with plenty of water.

Don’t accept every holiday treat passed your way. Save your indulgences for Christmas treats you truly love to make the calories worth it.

If you are hosting a Christmas celebration, plan a healthy menu or make substitutions in the classic Christmas dishes for lighter versions.

The occasional slip-up is inevitable on the best of days, and slip-ups are more likely during the holidays. If you end up eating a little more than you intended to or can’t make your workout session, go easy on yourself. I know I will !

HYPNOTHERAPY FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURENICE (National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence) has recently (Aug 2011) completed a review of hypertension research and has reached the conclusion that stress/lifestyle factors play a part in Primary/Essential Hypertension.

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

What is High Blood Pressure?Your blood pressure is a measure of the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps blood around your body. It naturally changes throughout the day, depending on your emotional state & physical activity levels, but when it stays consistently too high over time it is known as hypertension. High B.P. accounts for 20-25% of all deaths worldwide & affects approx one in three people worldwide. That’s over 16 million people in the UK, unfortunately, in 90 % of cases of high blood pressure, doctors are unable to find a physical cause – this hypertension is called ‘primary’ or ‘essential hypertension’, this means there is no single cause. Although the exact cause of high blood pressure is not fully understood, it is known that some factors to do with lifestyle can contribute: -

• Smoking

• FamilyHistory

• Overweight

• Stress

• Lackofexercise

• Poordiet

• Excessivealcoholconsumption

Here at Peterborough Hypnotherapy Practice, we are rolling out in January 2012 a new certified programme; which has been designed specifically to meet the needs of people who have Primary Hypertension. This unique programme looks at the individual needs of each client & devises a treatment plan for the most effective way of tackling high BP.

Full details will be available in the Jan 2012 issue of the Scene Magazine, however I expect that this programme will be in high demand and I am NOW taking bookings for FREE INITIAL CONSULTATIONS in January to discuss in-depth & confidentially without obligation how this programme can be of assistance to you.

Body Intelligence Training with Sally Carmichael at Barnsdale Lodge

Your mind and body are in cahoots. What you

think affects how your body behaves and what

you do with your body affects how you think.

Now this might sound a bit ‘out there’ however,

Sally Carmichael has 20 years experience in the

field of movement education, and trains with the

best.

“I have integrated existing movement disciplines

and somatic methods to evolve what is known as

Body Intelligence.” Explains Sally.

Sally helps to develop people’s awareness of the

connection between thinking, feeling and moving.

This awareness is the body’s own intelligence

guidance system that has to be trained, just like

a muscle so that we can use it effectively. She

uses bodymapping, movement techniques from

eastern and western technologies, psychology

and somatics to help individuals develop their

own body’s intelligence.

Barnsdale Lodge are offering a two day retreat

so that you can discover how these amazing

techniques can help to improve your skills

development for any sport, injury rehabilitation

and/or creative performance. You will have a

complete body check to map your weaknesses

and strengths and workshops throughout the 2

days that will help you to link how you think and

feel to how you move.

If you would like to be in touch with your own

body and realise how you feel, then you will find

Sally a very interesting person. Sally has a very

open view and will teach you as an individual to

expose your potential.

The car, which will be available in the UK in the New Year,

is expected to sell for around £14,500 and, let me tell you,

you will get a lot for your money if a super-mini is the kind of

motor that toots your horn.

I got to drive the Swift Sport around Barcelona as part of the

Japanese company’s efforts to promote its latest model to

the media. I was impressed; the car has more control, it’s

more fun and it has lower emissions than its predecessor.

But the best thing about it is that a sixth gear has been

added to a gearbox which has been woefully lacking in the

past.

On the outside, the Swift Sport looks great from the rear.

A wind diffuser and twin tailpipes give it an appearance

similar to a Renault Clio Sport. The front is less extreme,

but from the side the car has a low-slung stance which

immediately distinguishes it from a standard Swift. 17 inch

alloy wheels also add to the chunkier, more potent, image.

Behind the wheel, the new model is quicker off the mark

than the last one due to an increase in power output, which

has risen from 121bhp to 134bhp. The sixth gear also helps

to improve acceleration and gives the speedy Swift a more

sporty gear change. The leather clad steering wheel and the

front sports seats add to the athletic feel of the Japanese

car. The seats grip you when the Suzuki is flung around

corners (and there were plenty of left and right-handers

on the bendy hills rising above beautiful Barcelona). Don’t

get me wrong, the Swift Sport is never going to give you an

“GREAT THINGS can come in small

packages”. It’s a well used

expression and one that definitely

suits Suzuki’s new Swift Sport.

adrenaline overdose – but it’s fun enough to stand up to fast

little numbers like the Citroen DS3, the Fiat Punto Evo and

the MINI Cooper.

With seven airbags, Suzuki’s pocket-rocket is safe as well

as sprightly. It offers the same control and peace of mind as

the standard Swift, which earned a five-star rating in the

European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) and the

highest overall points scored amongst other new cars tested

at the time. Standard safety equipment also includes anti-

lock braking with electronic braking-force distribution, and

an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).

Suzuki expects its new offering to appeal to motorists in their

early 30s, so it’s possible that parents with young children,

who are looking for a bit of a fun drive, could go for this motor.

I suspect that many won’t be looking at the Swift Sport as

a practical option though and it’ll be the single girls and

guys with a limited budget and a need for speed who will be

heading in their droves to Suzuki dealerships in 2012.

With our long and often glorious autumns it doesn’t feel quite right that Christmas is nearly here again. Over a mince pie or two, time to reflect on the season now past - what grew well and perhaps what not so well, make plans and thumb through seed catalogues, get ready as spring’s on the way!

‘My Poinsettia has lost all its leaves’ – ‘My cyclamen has turned to mush’… Never fear, top tips here for getting the most out of these festive fancies. Merry Christmas!

PoinsettiaPoinsettias need plenty of warmth.• Protecttheplantfromthecold, evenwhen shopping for it!• Averagetemperaturesof12-15°careoptimum.• Atnightdon’ttrapyourplantbehindthecurtainswhereitwillgetcold.• Water thoroughly and wait until the compost dries out a little before watering again.

Create SpaceCreating enough space so that people can move around easily and comfortably will

help them to feel more at ease and relaxed so look around your home – is there any way

you can create extra space? It might be as simple as removing the coffee table from the

middle of the lounge. Look at the furniture you have scattered around, could anything

be moved into the garage on a temporary basis?

If you have young children visiting, move any expensive ornaments so they are out

of reach. This will prevent people being on tender hooks when excited children are

running around Christmas morning.

SeatingIf your seating is limited, think about investing in some bean bags or cubes. These

are great for children and young adults and can be used anywhere. They can also

be easily stored when not in use.

Sleeping ArrangementsIf you haven’t got the luxury of unused space then just be logical about it. You

might have to give up the main bedroom - especially if you have to utilise the

living room as a make-shift bedroom. If you use the room it will help things run

more smoothly and avoid any unnecessary ‘awkwardness’ in the morning if you

reparing for

Christmas can be

quite a stressful time,

especially if you are

entertaining over

the festive period.

Sorting your home

so that you can deal

with the invasion of

guests (some invited,

some not) and

working out just how

you are going to feed

everyone and where

everyone will sleep,

is, unfortunately, just

the beginning.

However with some

careful strategic

planning, you can be

prepared.

are waiting for your guests to wake up.

Besides with a house full you’re bound

to be up early anyway!

Check any inflatable beds and spare

bedding. If they have seen better days

invest in a couple of blow up beds

and extra ‘fluffy’ pillows and duvets.

Making your guests feel comfortable is

important, so don’t leave it until the last

minute to check them.

FoodTBe prepared and have your menus

sorted. Consider any allergies or

requirements people may have. If you

don’t know – ask as this will avoid any

embarrassing moments.

Storing food could be an issue. So

start munching your way through

your freezers contents now to free up

some space. Look through cupboards

and throw away any condiments, tins,

of the chairs and simply gather about half

way down and tie with a big, luxurious

ribbon. Same applies for all your plates,

cutlery, serving dishes and pans. See

what you can borrow from the family and

friends who may be spending Christmas

elsewhere, again think about colour

schemes if appearance is important to

you. Alternatively, find some plates that

can be purchased singularly – there are

plenty of bargains out there so have a

good look round.

Whatever your plans this year, remember,

that spending time together is what is

really important, so accept any help

that’s offered, don’t try to do it all yourself

and definitely don’t try to keep the house

as tidy as normal.

And the most important thing – enjoy it!

cereals or sachets that are past their

sell by date and any items that you

haven’t used in the last six months.

Make the most of the new found space

and stack your festive food carefully

and logically.

Eating arrangementsIdeally everyone needs to be eating at

the same time. If necessary consider

purchasing a sheet of MDF and

polystyrene sheeting to place over

your current dining table – once it is

covered and decorated, no-one will

know the difference and it will allow

ten people to be sat round a table

that normally holds six. Extra chairs

needed? Borrow them! If you really are

particular about creating a wow factor

with your dining experience, then use

white pillow cases to put over the back

You don’t have to be a bloke and you don’t have to like football

to love this book. Dave Roberts relocates to the USA and his

wife tells him his 1,134 football programmes aren’t coming with.

He can take just 32. As he begins the task of choosing which,

memories abound – his youthful football obsession, crushes on

disinterested girls, rubbish jobs and trying to impress skinheads.

One final programme is added to his collection – one that he

thought he’d never say, one which means more to him than all

the rest. A funny, touching tale of a man’s life and loves.

32 PROGRAMMES by Dave Roberts bantam press £12.99

THE RADLEYS by Matt Haig Canongate £7.99

Matt Haig is a clever, witty and hugely original storyteller.

Winner of this year’s TV Book Club “Best Read”, this is the

story of a very ordinary family from the outside. Teenagers.

Dodgy uncles. The usual. However, behind the suburban

front door, the dinner parties and Radio 4, it’s a different

matter. They’re vampires. This book has perhaps the best

shoutline I’ve ever seen on a cover – and it sums up the story

brilliantly: “Families: They’re a bloody nightmare…”

Bestselling author Freya North tells us what books she’ll be giving this Christmas.

REVIEWS

“Never have an affair with someone who has less to lose than

you.” When I read that on the cover, I knew I was in for a page-

turner of a read. This is Tamar’s first novel – and it’s brilliant

in that compelling, car-crash way. Clive has been Sally’s lover

for 5 years. He promised he’d leave his wife for her. He lied.

Written in the present tense, in the first person, sometimes funny,

sometimes dark, it charts Sally’s desperation, delusion – and

revenge. Gripping. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned…!

THE MISTRESS’S REVENGE by Tamara Cohen Doubleday £12.99

THE CAT WHO CAME FOR CHRISTMAS by Cleveland Amory Corgi £6.99

One snowy Christmas Eve, down a New York alley, the author

and the cat first met. Polar Bear, as he called him, was at

death’s door. Cleveland Amory preferred dogs. The story

follows their first year together – an unlikely pair: a stroppy

stray cat and a curmudgeonly old bloke. Never twee, the

relationship is recounted in funny and touching prose. Amory

was a distinguished journalist, satirist and novelist – and

when he died, he was buried next to Polar Bear.

EbooksThe Scene guide to buying an Ebook readerYou may think that the screens on Ebook readers make your eyes

strain, but this problem has been solved by the use of a display

called ‘e-ink’. They don’t use a back light, which is what typically

leads to eye strain. Ebook readers have also been developed now

to give you sufficient battery life for between 7,000 and 8,000 page

turns – plenty to keep you busy!

Ebook readers can store a significant number of books, possibly

several hundred with 512mb of storage. Some Ebook readers

also come with memory card slots if you are looking at adding a

significant number of books to your collection.

Some readers can also store audio books, so if this is of interest to

you check the capabilities before buying. Audio books do require

more memory though.

The functionality of Ebook readers can vary with some having

touch-screen and stylus input, whilst others have QWERTY

keyboards.

Students may want to consider a reader which allows notes to be

made or highlighted.

Finally the size of the reader needs to be considered – do you

want it to fit in your pocket or handbag, or would a larger screen

be beneficial.

Sri Lanka as a nation has come a long

way from it’s turbulent past which has

been blighted by civil unrest and the 2004

Tsunami, which caused over 50,000

wonderfully resilient and proud people

and not only have they come to terms

with the past but they are looking forward

to the future with much optimism. In our

opinion there is no doubt that this unique

island is primed to become a prosperous

destination hotspot.

Cricket fans in particular will want to take

a sport followed religiously in a Cricket-

Heading inland is the cultural heartland

of what has made this nation what it is

today. From the rich history of the Golden

Triangle, endowed with temples and

monasteries offering an insight into the

history of the ancient kingdoms, to the

quintessentially British colonial charm

of the Hill Country, with tea plantations

dotted across the verdantly green hills and

quaint houses that wouldn’t look out of

place in the English countryside, this is an

area deserving exploration. The so-called

‘Capital’ of the cultural heartland, Kandy,

was the last ancient kingdom to hold out

against colonialism and is rich & proud in

its strong Buddhist heritage, and it was

no surprise that it was made a UNESCO

World Heritage Site in 1988.

Sri Lanka’s picturesque beach towns and

ports have drawn past explorers and traders

to its shores, lured by the exotic offerings of

fruits, spices and tea. Today those towns

offer smart little boutique hotels and lodges,

with bustling centres that house energetic

markets. Alongside they offer miles and miles

of wonderful pristine beaches that provide

the perfect base to relax and just do nothing

at all.

Missing the edge of wildlife sightings? Sri

Lanka has a number of superb National Parks

where you can spot the Sri Lankan elephant,

leopard and sloth bear for starters, which are

all endemic to the island. Many other species

of mammal plus over 200 species of birds are

also found in the National Parks, to ensure the

offerings of nature are rich and varied.

There are regular direct flights from

London Heathrow and the island can

also be combined with The Maldives or

destinations in Asia or the Middle East.

Hannah and Sam have toured nationally, played festivals across the UK and received radio play internationally. They play predominantly English songs and tunes on Accordion and Fiddle, and the live show naturally includes Hannah’s renowned high-energy clog dancing.

Stamford has a great new eatery called the Cosy Club, it is located in the old post office sorting rooms, just off Red Lion Square.

This fantastic venue is large enough to accommodate large parties and they even have a menu specifically for you, plus there is a private function room with its own bar that is available for hire. The decor has a very eclectic design and adds a new dimension to the Stamford food scene. The Scene team went along to sample the delights of the Cosy Club to see firsthand what this great place has to offer.

The menu has a wide variety of dishes to include fish and vegetarian plus a great Tapas menu, which is perfect for sampling a diverse range of foods.

We thought this was an excellent place to start, so ordered Octopus, Chicken and Corn fritters from the Tapas menu - these came with Ciabatta and made a great starter. The portions were just right and each one tasted superb. For mains, we had Confit of Duck in a Rioja Sauce, Goats Cheese, Beetroot and Couscous

salad and a Vegetarian Curry served with Naan bread and Riata. All three dishes were totally different and each one had obviously been prepared with great attention to detail. As a team, we usually like to swap and share dishes so that we all get a flavour of the food served - however, today was very different, as none of us wanted to give up a mouthful of our dishes....which must prove how tasty the food was. The desserts on offer, once again reflected a ‘something for everyone’ choice from Sticky Toffee Pudding to Knickerbocker Glory.

The Cosy Club is open and serving food from 9am, with their superb all day breakfast/brunch menu, right through to 10pm. It is an absolute must try venue, with prices of food and wine offering great value too.

Presents Although it’s always nice to receive presents at Christmas, it’s always a struggle to buy for other people. You either have no money to buy presents for everyone, have no idea what to buy or don’t know exactly who you should buy for.

My advice is to buy presents for family and your closest friends only, as otherwise it could get confusing and very expensive! And if you have very little to spend then remember small token gifts still show thought. You could always make gifts if you are arty and creative – it saves a lot of money and is much more thoughtful.

As for what exactly to buy for people, think about their interests instead of instantly gravitating to the easy options (i.e bath/shower products or, classically, socks, unless you know they’ll love them), and ask yourself whether they would actually make use of the present – there’s no use in spending money on something than will never be used, so be practical! It’s very easy to get caught up in the stress of Christmas, but remember

It seems like I was only just writing about exam results in August, and

now it’s December and Christmas is just around the corner! I think

it’s fair to say that we all love the Christmas period, whether it’s the

presents, the food, the festive spirit or simply having a few weeks

break from school or college, so luckily there’s not long to wait now!

Christmas TVOne of my favourite things about the festive season is TV entertainment, be it

Christmas films or Christmas TV specials. This year it is rumoured that there will

be Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas, Outnumbered and

Top Gear Christmas specials, no doubt amongst many more. Classic Christmas

films like It’s a Wonderful Life, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th

Street and more recent films such as Elf , How the Grinch stole Christmas and Love

Actually are sure to get you in the mood for Christmas – after all, it’s the only time

of the year when it’s acceptable to watch your favourite Christmas movies!

to relax over the festive period and have fun. Whether you’re one to wake up at five in the morning on Christmas to open your presents or would prefer a lie in, just chill out and enjoy it- it’ll be over before you know it! I hope that you all have an amazing Christmas and New Year and that all of your Christmas wishes come true.

£Options at Retirement – Turn to the MarketIf you are retiring over the next few months you will have received information

about your pension fund from your current provider, including details for buy-

ing annuities. But be aware the provider’s annuity offered, however, may not

be competitive and an open market option could add up to 30% more pension

income each year for the rest of your life.

An open market option means you are free to buy a pension annuity from any annuity provider, this applies to with profits annuities as well as standard annuities.

Although every one of the approximate 350,000 people retiring in the UK in 2011 could consider an open market option, over 2/3rds still did not shop around meaning their fixed retirement income was less than it should have been.

Buying the right pension income is very important as once bought, annuities cannot be switched to another

annuity provider and cannot be changed to a different type of annuity.

There are many aspects to your retirement options, and a comprehensive review of your circumstances is normally worthwhile. The importance of talking things over with a suitably qualified Independent Financial Advisor cannot be overstated. If you are coming close to retirement and have received information from your current provider talk to us now – your income for the rest of your life could depend on it.
