Kent Gonsoulin is one of the funni- est Cajun Comedians performing today. His unique brand of clean cajun humor keeps audiences laughing across the south. Coming from a large Catholic family, Kent was always making people laugh at the dinner table and family gather- ings with his stories and imperson- ations. Growing up, he was a huge fan of Bud Fletcher, Redd Foxx and Johnny Carson. Kent’s love for the stage runs in his family. He is a third generation entertainer. His grandfather, Wilton Hebert and his band The Louisiana Six, played dixieland jazz throughout the south from 1923 to 1941. It was his love of entertaining that lead Kent to enter into talent shows and joke telling contests while in college at LSU. In 1993, Kent got his first big break when he won The International Cajun Joke Telling Contest. Kent then began performing through- out Louisiana and was featured along with other cajun comedians on the top selling Keyaw Video, The Red Tanny Shoe Tour in 1994. Kent’s popularity continued to grow and he was invited to perform at Cajun Comic Relief, a charity event for Good- will Industries for 8 years. It was during this time that Kent began performing to both local and out of state audiences. His venues grew to include charity events, corporate events, conventions, private parties, comedy shows and festivals. In 2001, Kent released his first CD and followed in 2003 with his second CD “Live, Down on the Bayou”. In 2004, Kent released his first DVD, “Kent Gon- soulin, Cajun Humorist”. The opportuni- ties kept coming and Kent’s success as a comedian continued to grow. He learned to keep his brand of comedy clean and broad enough to be enjoyed by people in different areas of the country. The Allen Parish Po- lice Jury approved $3.4 million in bonds for West Allen Water Dis- trict at their meeting Monday night. Rusty Reeves ex- plained the petition for the bonds was filed in 2011 and approval from the Bond Commission has just come through. Reeves said the funds will put in approxi- mately 54 miles of lines and 16 miles of replace- ment pipes. There will also be a 125,000 gallon elevated tank installed in the Bow Allen area and some fire hydrants. Some 140 customers in Topsy have 2” lines that will be replaced with 6” or 8” lines. The district serves between 1,012-1,020 houses, Camp Pearl and the Methodist Camp. Reeves said the district can get more customers with the up- grades. The flat rate is go- ing up from $17 to $23 and from $3.75 per thousand gallons to $4.54. Reeves said that is where the district needs to be. He said they have also worked out a sys- tem where they can serve customers from another direction when a line goes out, instead of leaving them without water until the line is repaired. Blake Cooper with RoyOMartin (ROM) told jurors the company appreciates their work- ing relationship with Allen Parish and hopes to strengthen it in the future. Cooper said ROM made enough OSB last year to build 60,000 single family homes. “We have 165 em- ployees, many of them from Allen Parish,” Cooper said. He said ROM runs a 24/7 operation. “Safety is paramount right now,” he said. “The weather has been harsh on loggers. This facility is the only one that did not take down time.” He said Allen Parish is a good parish to oper- ate in. Kent Gonsoulin is one of the funni-est Cajun Comedians performing today. His unique brand of clean cajun humor keeps audiences laughing across the south.
Coming from a large Catholic family, Kent was always making people laugh at the dinner table and family gather-ings with his stories and imperson-ations. Growing up, he was a huge fan of Bud Fletcher, Redd Foxx and Johnny Carson. Kent’s love for the stage runs in his family. He is a third generation entertainer. His grandfather, Wilton Hebert and his band The Louisiana Six, played dixieland jazz throughout the south from 1923 to 1941.
It was his love of entertaining that lead Kent to enter into talent shows and joke telling contests while in college at LSU. In 1993, Kent got his first big break when he won The International Cajun Joke Telling Contest.
Kent then began performing through-out Louisiana and was featured along
with other cajun comedians on the top selling Keyaw Video, The Red Tanny Shoe Tour in 1994.

The District is located in northeast Allen Parish in the vi-cinity of the Town of Oakdale. The District also extends into Rapides Parish. As required by the National Environmental Policy Act and agency regulations, the Rural Utilities Service has prepared an Environmental Assessment that evaluated the potential environmental effects and consequences of the proposal. The Water System proposal consists of: 47,700 LF of 6” water main, 12,000 LF of 4” water main, 26 fire hydrants, and new service line, Construct a new 100,000 gallon elevated storage tank with associated site work, Construct a new office build-ing, Replace existing booster pump, Recoat the existing 50,000 gallon ground storage tank, Install a Telemetry System.

Kent’s hard work continues to pay off. He has appeared on numerous TV and ra-dio programs and has been featured in sev-eral newspapers and magazines. He has been seen on the “E” entertainment net-work and has acted in several commercials. Kent has also done voice acting and is the “Cajun voice” for the restaurant chain, Backyard Burgers,. He has also acted in movies such as “The Dukes of Hazard” and “All the King’s Men”. Kent has been seen in Branson, Mis-souri at the Mickey Gilley theater and in the Yakov Smirnoff show.
Whether Kent is per-forming individually or on tour with the ALL STAR Cajun Comedy Tour, his love for mak-ing people laugh is evi-
dent. His success as a Cajun Comedian over the past 16 years can be contributed to his love for laughter and his heritage as a true south Louisiana Ca-jun.
Kent Gonsoulin will be the featured speak-er and entertainment at the Oakdale Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, March 20.
The banquet will be held at the Mowad Civic Center. Tickets are $40.
The social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. and a cash wine bar will be set up in the room on the right as you enter the hall.
Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. The en-tertainment is set for shortly after everyone is seated for dinner.

This has been the fastest school year ever for me. It seems the kids just went back to school and now they’re only 2 six weeks away from getting out again. Where did the time go? What are we go-ing to do with them for three months?
I will probably have to beg, plead and pay B.J. to keep up with Taz for me. Sometimes the girls get along fine, and sometimes they don’t. You put together a moody teenager and a devilish little sprite who likes to aggravate her sister, and the mix does not always work very well. I keep telling myself most sisters are like that, but it’s still nerve pluck-ing.
Taz has developed a great liking for B.J.’s makeup and uses it lavishly whenever she gets her hands on it. This of course, sparks off major fights. Taz goes with the theory that what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine, too...as long as you don’t catch me. Unfortu-nately you can’t hide the makeup.
On the bright side, softball will be starting soon and I have discovered that I love being at the fields and watching the games. Taz took after her sister and loves the game, too. She has had her ball, bat and glove out for some time now and pesters B.J. to play with her.
So far, the two sisters have managed to practice amicably, or if not, they’re not telling me. I’m glad B.J. is willing to take the time to help her little sister.
It really bothers me that I can no lon-ger throw the ball or help her like I did B.J. when she started out, but such is life.
Taz has matured a lot since last ball season, maybe not enough, but I have high hopes for her. She likes the game and I don’t mind sitting in the bleach-ers for hours watching. I know she has to prove herself before she can move up.
Unlike some parents, I understand that the best players are going to be giv-en the preferred positions, and I’m will-ing to wait until Taz earns her spot on the team. She may never be the pitcher, catcher or first baseman, but as long as she puts everything she has into each game, I will be so proud of her.
B.J. worked her way from outfield to third base before she decided to hang up her helmet. I was very proud of her, too. She was fortunate to play for the same coach every season and that helped.
Just enjoy your children and grand-children on the field. It’s not life or death, just a game.
Just waiting forsoftball to start
t seems as if, everywhere you turn these days, there are studies claiming to show that America has lost its upward mobility for people born in the lower so-cioeconomic levels. But there is a sharp difference between upward “mobility,” defined as an opportunity to rise, and mobility defined as actually having ris-en.
That distinction is seldom even men-tioned in most of the studies. It is as if everybody is chomping at the bit to get ahead, and the ones that don’t rise have been stopped by “barriers” created by “society.”
When statistics show that sons of high school dropouts don’t become doctors or scientists nearly as often as the sons of Ph.D.s, that is taken as a sign that American society is not “fair.”
If equal probabilities of achieving some goal is your definition of fairness, then we should all get together -- people of every race, color, creed, national ori-gin, political ideology and sexual prefer-ence -- and stipulate that life has never been fair, anywhere or any time in all the millennia of recorded history.
Then we can begin at last to talk sense.I know that I never had an equal
chance to become a great ballet dancer like Rudolph Nureyev. The thought of becoming a ballet dancer never once crossed my mind in all the years when I was growing up in Harlem. I suspect that the same thought never crossed the minds of most of the guys growing up on New York’s lower east side.
Does that mean that there were unfair barriers keeping us from following in the footsteps of Rudolph Nureyev?
A very distinguished scholar once mentioned at a social gathering that, as a young man, he was not thinking of going to college until someone else, who recognized his ability, urged him to do so.
Another very distinguished scholar told me that, although his parents were anti-Semitic, it was the fact that he went to a school with many Jewish children that got him interested in intellectual matters and led him into an academic career.
All groups, families and cultures are not even trying to do the same things, so the fact that they do not all end up equally represented everywhere can hardly be automatically attributed to “barriers” created by “society.”
Barriers are external obstacles, as dis-tinguished from internal values and as-pirations -- unless you are going to play the kind of word games that redefine achievements as “privileges” and treat an absence of evidence of discrimination as only proof of how diabolically clever and covert the discrimination is.
The front page of a local newspaper in northern California featured the head-line “The Promise Denied,” lamenting the under-representation of women in computer engineering. The continuation of this long article on an inside page had the headline, “Who is to blame for this?”
In other words, the fact that reality does not match the preconceptions of the intelligentsia shows that there is something wrong with reality, for which somebody must be blamed. Apparently their preconceptions cannot be wrong.
Women, like so many other groups, seem not to be dedicated to fulfilling the prevailing fetish among the intel-ligentsia that every demographic group should be equally represented in all sorts of places.
Women have their own agendas, and if these agendas do not usually include computer engineering, what is to be done? Draft women into engineering schools to satisfy the preconceptions of
The ‘Fairness’ Fraud
Just what is America’s favorite pastime? Is it politics or baseball? Pol-itics has always been a major spectator sport, particularly here in my home state of Louisiana. But don’t sell baseball short. Not only has base-ball been around longer than any of America’s professional team sports, the game’s highs and lows have been in-jected in national politics almost from the sport’s inception.
Now I’m a diehard baseball fan. I grew up in St. Louis, and lived next door to the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, the great former Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion. I was in his box the Sunday afternoon back on May 2, 1954, when Stan the Man Musial hit five home runs on the same day in a doubleheader. All this week, I’m in Tampa, Florida for spring training and will watch five major league ballgames, including a trip to the home stadium of my perennial favorite, the New York Yankees.
A few years back, the Tampa Bay Rays were the Cinderella team that went from “worst to first,” winning the American League pen-nant. Maybe it has something to do with their name. They used to be called the “Devil Rays” and their record was terrible. As soon as they dropped the word “Devil,” they became victorious overnight. Is it baseball pure and simple, or is the Religious Right involved?
Maybe it’s impossible to get away from campaigns and politics by focusing on spring training in baseball, but I’m going to give it a shot. The Fox network will carry many major league games this season. You know -- as in “Fox News.” In the National League, ev-eryone, even the pitchers, get an equal chance to bat. Will Fox say that the National Leaguers are socialists? Will their commenta-tors argue they should call some home runs out if they are too far to the left? And I guess you can’t blame the Democrats from be-moaning that every time someone steals a base, they get reminded of the 2000 presidential election.
There is also a lesson to be learned from Babe Ruth as congress considered limiting executive pay and bonuses of corporations who received bailout money. When the Babe was asked how he could justify making more money than the President, he shrugged off the question by answering, “I had a better year.”
I suppose one of the biggest differences between these two spec-tator sports is the sense of optimism that baseball brings every spring. The crack of the bat, a pop fly against a blue sky, and the green grass seem to offer a sense of renewal. It harkens back to the essence of youth and heroes of the past, and you feel that almost anything is possible in the coming season. But in today’s political climate, there is little thought of great statesmen and principled political figures. Political courage today is too often defined by poll watching and sticking a wet finger to the wind.
So when the TV remote offers a choice of politics or baseball, I’ll choose the great American pastime. It’s baseball hands down. See you next week back in Louisiana.

Everything was clicking to perfection until the last minute-

Suddenly, a cou-ple of turnovers and missed opportunities cost the No. 9-seed Tigers a chance to advance in the state tournament.
Mangham rallied for a gut-wrenching 49-47 victory on Oberlin’s home floor last Friday to end one of the best seasons in Tiger bas-ketball history.
“Down the stretch we got a little rattled,” Oberlin Coach Car-lo Maggio said. “We didn’t make plays, and they made some big plays at the end. We took some bad shots and made a couple of turnovers with a min-ute to go, and they went on a run.”
Oberlin was up by seven points with three minutes remain-ing, and still held a solid six-point lead around the one min-ute mark before it all started to unravel for the Tigers.

“That was bad,” Coach Maggio said. “We played well the whole game and we were up 36-29 at the end of the third quar-ter. Our kids were playing well defen-sively, and we took four charges.”

Oberlin was also hot from the free throw line. The Tigers con-nected on nine of 11 attempts.
“All phases of the game we played well,” Coach Maggio said. “It came down to the end.
They made plays and we didn’t. For three and a half quarters of the game we took good care of the ball. At the end the kids got a lit-tle rattled.
Oberlin finished the 2013-14 season with a 20-5 record...and a lot of what-if’s in the minds of the players and coaching staff.
Weather won out on Oakdale’s baseball home opener Tues-day against Hicks due to the ice storm. The Warriors have a long road trip and will re-turn home March 25 against Reeves.
The Warriors will take a 1-3 record into this week’s Rosepine Tournament that runs from today through Saturday.
Last week the War-riors opened the 2014 season at the Kinder Baseball Tournament starting Thursday when Oakdale beat Mamou 8-0 behind se-nior Nick Hulick’s one-hitter.
Hulick struck out eight batters in seven innings and allowed just one walk.
Junior catcher Tim-my Townley and Clay Doyle knocked in two runs each, Nick Adams scored three times, and
Zack Higginbotham was one-for-three with a run batted in.
Host Kinder beat the Warriors 9-3 Saturday morning. Clay Doyle worked three innings on the mound and al-lowed two hits and six walks while striking out two Yellowjackets.
Nick McDaniel worked the final four innings.
Townley and McDan-iel went two-for-four and combined for three RBI.
The Warriors fell to St. Eds later in the day with Reggie Philson and Nick Adams earn-ing time on the mound.
Townley scored a run and batted home a teammate, and Hulick, McDaniel and Adams all went one-for-three.
“We were just one hit away from finishing with a winning record for the tournament,” Oakdale Coach Brent
McCoy said. “This is always a very tough tournament and we like to play in it to see where we need work.
“We did have some bright spots. Timmy Townley, Clay Doyle and Nick McDaniel had multiple hits and RBIs this weekend. Nick Hulick pitched well as did Nick Adams and Nick McDaniel.
“We need to be a little more consistent with hitting the base-ball with runners in scoring position. A few other minor fixes and we should have a good season this year.

our self-anointed saviors? Or will a propaganda campaign be sufficient to satisfy those who think that they should be making other people’s choices for them?
That kind of thinking is how we got ObamaCare.
At least one of the recent celebrat-ed statistical studies of social mo-bility leaves out Asian Americans. Immigrants from Asia are among a number of groups, including Ameri-can-born Mormons, whose achieve-ments totally undermine the notion
that upward mobility can seldom be realized in America.
Those who preach this counter-productive message will probably never think that the envy, resent-ment and hopelessness they preach, and the welfare state they promote, are among the factors keeping peo-ple down.

The jury held a public hearing then voted to reduce the speed limit on a portion of Ten Mile Road to 35 m.p.h. Ju-ror Creig Vizena said he talked to residents at all 10 houses on the road and all agreed the speed limit should be reduced from Scott Road south to Highway 26.
Liquor licenses were approved for the Hard-wood Mill Restaurant and Oberlin Restaurant (formerly Darrell’s) at the golf course.
Secretary/Treasurer Colleen Sonnier re-ported the prisoner expenses were over budget again in Febru-ary, but said the sheriff has gotten the numbers down. Expenses for the prisoner upkeep is $8,894.67 over budget through February.
There were 37 pris-oners in the Oberlin jail, eight DOC; seven in Jackson Parish; 20 in Avoyelles; and 15 in Pine Prairie.
Jurors voted to ap-prove advertising for bids for generators for the Dunn Street lift station in Oakdale, the Oakdale police station and the Reeves police station.
Brenda Byrd request-ed reducing the number
of Civic Center board members from nine to five. She said the board has discovered over the years that the large number is burdensome and makes it hard to get a quorum for meet-ings.
Juror Matt Fontenot agreed the board is a volunteer thing and made a motion to re-duce the number from 9 to 5 members, if the D.A. has no objections.
Fontenot also sug-gested checking out whether the police jury building and Civic Cen-ter require back flow preventers.
A road off Sam Cloud Road with no name was accepted into the parish system at the request of Juror Heath
Ardoin. Road Supervi-sor Greg Mahaffey said it met all criteria.
Airport Manager Joel Johnson reported a sum left over from a grant that could be diverted to purchase a vehicle for solid waste. The jury voted to amend the

Habitat for Humanity home planned for OakdaleHabitat for Humanity: Calcasieu Area Inc. wants
to build its first-ever home in Allen Parish. Habitat hopes to have a Faith Build -- a house largely spon-sored and built by local churches and volunteers -- in Oakdale later in the year, according to Lenn Knapp, Habitat’s executive director.
To get the process started, Habitat will hold a community meeting from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at Oakdale City Hall (333 East Sixth Av-enue).
At the meeting, Habitat representatives will talk with residents about available land options, volun-teer and committee opportunities and family enroll-

Donna Bailey, member of the Habitat board of directors, will spearhead the effort in Oakdale. She hopes as many residents as possible join in on the endeavor.
“As a lifelong member of the Allen Parish commu-nity and First Baptist Church in Oakdale, I am very excited that this Faith Build is coming to our parish to help one of our families,” Bailey said. “ I’m hopeful that the members of our community will join in this effort, because there is no greater joy than when we are serving others. Our life is blessed beyond mea-sure when we are working for the kingdom of God.”

places at which to hold the said elections, and the Commissioners-in-Charge and Commissioners, respectively, shall be those persons designated according to law.
Notice is further given that a portion of the monies collected from the tax described in the Propositions shall be remitted to certain state and statewide retirement systems in the manner required by law.
The said special elections will be held in accordance with the applicable provisions of Chapter 5 and Chapter 6-A of Title 18 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, as amended, and other constitutional and statutory authority, and the officers appointed to hold the said elections, as provided in this Notice of Special Elections, or such substitutes therefor as may be selected and designated in accordance with La. R.S. 18:1287, will make due returns thereof to said Governing Authority, and NOTICE IS HEREBY FURTHER GIVEN that the Governing Authority will meet at its regular meeting place, the Parish School Board Office, 1111 West 7th Avenue, Oberlin, Louisiana, on MONDAY, MAY 12, 2014, at FIVE O’CLOCK (5:00) P.M., and shall then and there in open and public session proceed to examine and canvass the returns and declare the results of the said special elections. All registered voters of the Districts are entitled to vote at said special elections and voting machines will be used.
