STACIe GodboUTSCHOOL NURSE

There have been many exciting things happen-ing in our schools this year related to the health and safety of our students and staff. I would like to extend some special THANK YOU’s to the people who have made these happen.

During our inservice days, Lisa Peterson from the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota came and presented “Seizure Training for School Personnel”. This training covers what epilepsy is, recognizing and responding to the four most common types of seizures, triggers, treatment options, and the impact of epilepsy on students. Epilepsy is the most com-mon neurological condition in children, and many seizures go misunderstood and misdiagnosed. This training is beneficial to all staff who work with stu-dents that are already diagnosed, and it will bring awareness for potential signs of seizures in children who may not have a diagnosis. We are also working with Lisa to become “Seizure Smart Schools” by having our students trained as well.

Members of the Carlton Fire and Ambulance trained staff from both buildings in Adult and Child CPR and AED’s. Dane Johnson, Dean Wolf and Steve Schmidt volunteered their time to work with our Medical Response Teams in each building. They also assisted us in purchasing new AED’s with updated American Heart Association guidelines for both schools!

Vision and Hearing screening went well with the help of our AMAZING volunteers: Lindsey Cadotte, Susan Cochran, Teresa Solomon, Sandi Davis, Jessica Owens, Amy DeCaigny, Sheri Herman, Nikki Czerwinski, Mary Swanson, Bobbie McCorison and Tabitha Kusnierek.

We had 10 handmade hats donated by Char Matteson to South Terrace. We so appreciate all your hard work that went into making these beautiful hats for our students who may need them as the weather gets colder.

THANK YOU to everyone mentioned above! People like you make our school great!!

Carlton Schools health and safety THANkS!

Register for your classes ASAP so they won’t be cancelled.

It’s that time of year when seniors are making decisions about life after high school and visiting colleges and military oppor-tunities. Mrs. Saunders accompanied two students to the Coast Guard Station in Duluth to learn about serving in this branch of the military. A tour of the search and rescue ship, the USCGC ALDER provided insight into the homeland missions in our region maintaining a safe waterway in all season.. In addition, we toured the land facility and had the chance to board the new rescue boats in our Duluth Port.

On Monday, October 17th, all Carlton Freshman visited a college. Half of the class went to the College of St. Scholastica and the other half went to Lake Superior College main campus and the LSC Emergency Response Training Center and Firefighting Program.

Students had the opportunity to learn about college admissions and tour each cam-pus. Freshman will begin their College and Career Readiness education this year in their Social Studies classroom. The field trip was chaperoned by Mrs. Saunders, Mr. Schmidt, Mrs. Coy, Mrs. Splinter and Mrs. Macarther.

TXT4Life Group participates in the Suicide Awareness walkThe Carlton High School TXT4Life

Group organized students, parents and teach-ers to walk in the 2016 Suicide Awareness Walk in Carlton. The group is chaired by Kyleah Schmidt, Senior and plans to create education programs for students at Carlton High School to help create awareness for suicide prevention in our school and com-munity. We feel that we are all part of a big family that should support each other and be there when someone feels sad or depressed or something has happened to you and life is really hard.

Our school should be a safe place for stu-dents and adults. The TXT4Life Club will meet to do activities, make posters, do lessons for younger kids and inform everyone about the TXT4Life phone number

be respectful, be responsible, be Safe, and be kind. These four behavior expectations are what we want our South Terrace students and staff to model each and every day as it becomes the common language that we speak. During the month of September and October, 273 “PAWS”itive Behavior Tickets were given from staff members to students recognizing them doing some-thing positive for their school and fellow students. Every Friday, three names are randomly chosen from our “PAWS”itive Behavior bucket for an opportunity to win a gift certificate from Applebee’s. Our local Applebee’s in Cloquet graciously donated 100 gift certificates to help rec-ognize the “PAWS”itive behavior of stu-dents this year.

As a kickoff to October being rec-ognized as National Bullying Awareness month, South Terrace students were able to spread the message and power of kind-ness around our school. Students and staff covered the sidewalks and playground blacktop with messages and images of kindness with the hope of bringing a smile to the faces of those who come our school. Messages like “You are great no matter what” and “Kindness + Niceness = You” are just a few of the positive words that could be read around the outside of South Terrace.

At the end of September, students in both 3rd grade classes walked to the Carlton Library. This was a great oppor-tunity for students to explore their local community when they walked through town, as well as experience what the library has to offer. Jodie Johnson gave an excellent presentation on different types of genres and gave a tour of their new space. Over half of the 3rd graders signed up for library cards, along with many oth-ers who already had one. They were able to use their new library cards that day to bring some books home.

Mrs. McCuskey’s 5th grade students had the opportunity to participate in the 48th annual Conservation Day held at the Cloquet Forestry Center. Some of the activities that students participated in were learning how logs are made into

useable lumber, how to build a shelter in the wilderness, and becoming aware of the dangers of and how to fight a wildfire.

On Friday, October 7, over 250 grand-parents entered the doors of South Terrace Elementary to visit classrooms, partici-pate in classroom projects with their grandchildren, and have a fantastic lunch! Students were also able to attend the book fair with their teachers and grandparents. Thank you to all of the South Terrace staff and community volunteers for doing a wonderful job hosting Grandparent’s Day!

17 families participated in Title I Family Night at South Terrace. The eve-ning was an opportunity for parents / guardians to find out what Title I is, how students qualify, how students exit, how South Terrace Elementary is keep-ing parents / guardians informed about their child’s progress, and a time for idea sharing on how to help children with reading and math. Families were treated to a meal and students had the chance to participate in some fun reading and math games. They also had the opportunity to win some really great prizes! Thank you to all of the teachers and staff who helped put on this wonderful event for our South Terrace students.

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 took the Optional Local Purpose Assessment (OLPA) in mathematics this month as practice preparation for the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) test in April 2017. The purpose of the assess-ment is for students to familiarize them-selves with the MCA test looks like, the device they will use for testing, and to get an idea of where they are currently at aca-demically in relation to the MCA’s. South Terrace students will take the math OLPA again in January as well as the reading OLPA. The OLPA is an optional test that is not used for accountability purposes.

UPCoMING eveNTS Thanksgiving Break - No School - November 23-25, 2016Thank you for all of the support the

community of Carlton gives to its stu-dents. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Partnering for SuccessThere may be few locations better to

live than Carlton. We are ideally situ-ated with fantastic resources available for frequent and convenient use. Carlton High School is fortunate to have two trout streams, Thomson Reservoir and Jay Cooke State park within walking distance. Students can also take a quick bus ride to the Twin Port Cities for enriched field experiences. From an educational oppor-tunity standpoint, among Carlton’s most valuable advantages is our close proximity to Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC), located three miles from the high school. We are very thank-ful FDLTCC has long been a support-ive partner for the continued success of Carlton students.

FDLTCC was on the forefront of College in the Schools programming in Minnesota, which offers students oppor-tunities to earn college credit while still enjoying their high school experience. working closely with FDLTCC program advisors, we are able to offer qualifying students more than 40 college credits, taught by Master Carlton teachers with-out leaving campus. When our College in the Schools students toured FDLTCC this fall, Admissions Officer, Mr. Josh Cleveland informed Carlton students FDLTCC was also their campus. Mr. Cleveland shared with our students all the resources available for their use, including their recently renovated library, study group spaces and online tutoring.

As a tribal college, FDLTCC is com-mitted to serving American Indian com-munities and promoting cultural under-standing. Every Wednesday, several of Carlton’s American Indian students attend FDLTCC with our Indian Education Coordinator, Victoria McMillen as part of the College-Connect program. The College-Connect students benefit from unique cultural activities, project-based learning, and academic supports in math and reading led by Nandagikendan Academy Director, Tara Graves. The pro-gram has been well received by our stu-dents and is vibrant component of their educational experience.

Carlton High School and FDLTCC continue to grow this partnership for the benefit of students. We are excit-ed for 2017 and a new program to offer additional advanced opportunities through interactive video, thoughtfully developing courses to increase college and career readiness and hosting a boys and girls doubleheader basketball game at the college this winter. Looking closely at FDLTCC post-secondary programs, we are able to explore ways we can best prepare our students for success in high school and beyond.

Thank you for your continued sup-port of Carlton High School, and please remember your feedback is valued and questions are welcomed. Please contact me by email, [email protected] or phone: (218) 384-4226.

The Carlton Community Memorial Scholarship program accepts donations for scholarships for graduating seniors. The focus of scholarship is based on the request of the donor. Many scholarships are memorials in name of a loved one or they have a focus area like science, sports, citizenship or leadership, Members of the Carlton Community recognize the

benefits of Post-Secondary Education for Carlton students and all donations are greatly appreciated by students and families. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship program for the class of 2017, contact Dave Rosen, Community Scholarship Chairman at 218-384-4226 or [email protected]

The 23nd annual Giving Thanks Feast at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2016. The event is sponsored by the student life organizations on campus and begins with an opening ceremony at 5:00 p.m. in the amphi-theater to welcome all guests and visitors. An honor song and traditional music will follow. Dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The feast is open to the public and is free to everyone.

The Giving Thanks Feast started 23 years ago as an effort to create greater awareness of the American

Indian tradition of giving thanks for a productive harvest. The popular event at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College draws several hundred people each year. The evening feast will have a traditional menu consisting of turkey and ham, venison, wild rice, corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, fry bread, berries, dessert and beverages.

This year’s Giving Thanks Feast will also honor the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College students who are military veterans or are currently on active duty.

The Giving Thanks Feast will have a collection site for anyone wishing to bring donated canned food or other non-perishable food items. All donations will be distributed to needy students through the Bruce Carlson Food Pantry on campus.

People interested in the Giving Thanks Feast are invited to come for any portion of the event. No registration or admission fees are required. For more information, call Jesse Stirewalt at (218) 590-3345 or via email to [email protected].
