Meet Nicole Tomei Zwolinski, exec at worldwide marketing group After Nicole Tomei Zwolinski took Intensive Office Education (now Software Technology) at Tallmadge High School, she realized she wanted to study business and marketing at Bowling Green State University. The 1998 Tallmadge graduate is now Senior Vice President, Marketing and Global Director, Contents and Events for GfK, a worldwide data marketing and consumer information firm headquartered in Germany. With over 15 years of Business to Business marketing experience, Zwolinski leads GfK’s marketing strategy, event management, content development and brand performance. She has been recognized throughout the industry and her company for her creativity. Last year, Zwolinski spoke to sopho- mores at Tallmadge High School about her career pathway and encouraged them to take business and marketing classes, as well as journalism and the arts. Finding an internship and working without a salary might not sound like a dream, but it can be a stepping stone to success, she told the group. After interning with the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball team, she cold-called marketing firms and found an internship at Nfo Worldgroup in Toledo, which led to her job at GfK. “Internships are incredibly valuable,” Zwolinski says. “Volunteer, participate in clubs and activities and learn every day.” Tallmadge business teacher Joni Giles says, “Nici’s dynamic personality and enthusiasm for life is truly contagious. KYOCERA SGS is an international leader in cutting tool technology for the aerospace, metalworking and automotive industries. Compact Executive Director Mary Jane Stanchina recognized student successes in the six districts, including Meredith Hartsook, who took first place in the Start-Up Business Plan Event at the International DECA Career Development Conference in April. “Marketing Management truly did change my life,” Hartsook told the group. Programming and Software Development instructor Terri Whitmer spoke about her students’ successes at the Business Professionals of America Nationals, where Fox Noland took first place and Noah Tranbarger placed in the top three. Stanchina thanked all those who supported the COMPACT COMPASS: FOUR E’s INITIATIVE this year. “This grant is the culmination of efforts and ideas we have been talking about for 20 years,” she explained. Stop by Joshua’s new coffee barA new coffee bar at Joshua’s Restaurant,

located inside Stow-Munroe Falls High School, is now open to students, staff and visitors. Featuring homemade pastry created by Level II students, the coffee bar also offers Bent Tree Coffees and cold and hot Stone House Teas.

Joshua’s Restaurant will open for lunch from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays beginning October 26. Culinary Arts College Tech Prep students prepare and serve different menu choices under the supervision of chef/instructors Shelley Giangaspero and Tracey Lee. For information or to be added to the e-mail list call 330-689-5213 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

An Autumn Buffet, replacing the Holiday Buffet, will be held Wednesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 16.

Construction Technologies students build pavilion As part of Construction Technologies College Tech Prep’s commitment to service,

students are building a small pavilion for Davey Elementary. The structure will serve as a shelter for teachers who are supervising children. The pavilion will be dedicated to the memory of Kahlil Pulliam, a Davey student who died in a car accident last year.

Held at the Global Center for Health Innovation in Cleveland, the event showcased 50 of Northeast Ohio’s best up-and-coming technological business startups. Attendees learned about the latest innovations via elevator pitches from exhibitors and then cast their votes on their favorite tech company.

Cyber Investigations Academy hosts spring fundraiser

Cyber Investigations Academy at Cuyahoga Falls, previously called Criminal Justice, hosted a fundraising event in April to benefit the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina counties. Lily Rose Lee, formerly known as Michelle Knight, spoke to an audience at Cuyahoga Falls High School about her experiences being kidnapped and held captive for more than a decade in Cleveland. Students helped organize and publicize the event.

Tyler Stadden, Stow-Munroe Falls, is the head painter at Macco Collision Repair and Auto Painting on Waterloo Road. Ben Crites, Cuyahoga Falls, is working at Tallmadge Collision Center as a painter’s helper and is training to be a painter. Mike Little, Cuyahgoa Falls, is working as a body technician at Montrose Ford in Fairlawn. Shawn Hurr, Cuyahoga Falls, is working for Falls Auto Body in the paint department.

Edd Hass, Stow-Munroe Falls, is joining the U.S. Navy and Kyle Wojciechowski, Tallmadge, is joining the U.S. Army. Shane Heberand, Roosevelt, is enrolled in the welding program at Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

IBA student attends Ohio Business WeekInternational Business Academy student Andrew Striner, Stow-

Munroe Falls, attended the Ohio Business Week held in July at Ohio University. His tuition was paid for by the Stow-Munroe Falls Cham-ber of Commerce thanks to contributions to the President’s Club.

Ohio Business Week is the only weeklong business camp in Ohio where high school students practice tackling real business-world challenges while having a real college experience.

Alayna Chlad, Roosevelt, is completing her clinical fellowship at Community Speech Services in Green. She graduated from Baldwin Wallace as a speech language pathologist. “I would have never known what a speech language pathologist was if it wasn’t for the Teaching Professions program,” Chlad says. “I looked into speech therapy and observed several classes and immediately fell in love. I knew at that moment it was what I was supposed to do.”

Culinary completer now pastry chefHannah Gibson, 2012 Culinary Arts completer from Tallmadge,

is the pastry chef at the Aurora Inn Hotel and Event Center. Previously, she worked at Sunny Hills Golf Course and Kent Lanes. She earned her associate’s degree from The University of Akron’s Hospitality Management, Culinary Arts program in 2016.

Programming students win at BPA nationals

Fox Noland, Stow-Munroe Falls, won first place at

Business Professionals of America Nationals in Orlando in the Information Technology Concepts category. He also placed in the Top Ten in three other events. Noah Tranbarger, Stow-Munroe Falls, placed in the top three in C-Sharp.

Marketing students place first in Cavs competition

Interactive Marketing/Design students at Cuyahoga Falls placed first among dozens of high schools in a marketing competition conducted by the Cleveland Cavaliers last school year. The students proposed that the team offer a year membership for students ages 13 to 17, which would include tickets to three games and other Cavs Cavalry benefits. Students created a 30-second video to showcase their proposal.

Hudson Auto Tech gets equipmentHudson’s Auto Technologies College

Tech Prep program recently purchased new cooling system service machines, transmission and power steering service machines and a fuel injection cleaning machine for the lab. In addition, Glenn and Lisa Denholm of Denholm’s Auto Service in Twinsburg donated a brake lathe to the program valued at $3,000.

Diane Burbick Conference set for January 13, 2018Eighth grade girls and their parents will be special guests at the

Diane Burbick Math and Science Conference, which will be held on Saturday, January 13, at Akron City Hospital.

The girls created metal starfish while they learned about heat treat methods.

Girls Geared camp kicks off first yearOffered for the first time in June 2017, Girls Geared for

Engineering Camp featured a week-long exploration of aerospace engineering and mechatronics. As part of the experience, the seventh and eighth grade girls participated in fun and challenging hands-on engineering projects and activities, such as constructing and launching a rocket, making a fidget spinner using CAD technology and pouring a metal object in the casting lab.

Site visits to Rockwell Automation and NMG Aerospace highlighted opportunities for women in high-tech companies. The multi-disciplinary camp was sponsored by the Compact and Kent State University’s College of Aeronautics and Engineering.

A.C.E. Academy students fly planes at KSU airportIn the 16th year for the A.C.E., Aeronautics Career

Education Academy, participants flew an orientation flight with pilots from the Kent State University airport and saw the Goodyear Aerospace airship. Other highlights included tours of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the MAPS Museum and time spent in KSU’s new air traffic control simulation lab, building and launching rockets and learning about helicopters from the Ohio National Guard.

Student Ambassador training on October 24Representatives from all Six District Educational Compact

College Tech Prep programs will take part in Student Ambassador Leadership training on Tuesday, October 24.

Leslie Ungar, President of Electric Impulse, Inc. will conduct the interactive seminar, held for the fifteenth year. Compact Ambassadors present at sophomore orientations and visitation days. The morning session will be held at the Davey Tree Expert Co. Institute in Kent.

Project SEARCH holds end-of-year celebrationAt the Project SEARCH Celebration held in May, nearly 50

Summa Health employees, who supervised and supported student interns were recognized and treated to lunch. Coordinator Carol Sayre welcomed families and Summa personnel. Six students who completed the program last year are working at competitive jobs. Project SEARCH is a collaborative, site-based initiative located at Summa Health.
