When heart valves comefrom a printerA record 750 exhibitors are taking part in this year´s Compamed (see chart onpage 10). The big topics in 2014 are medical 3D printing, wearables—that is,measurement technology worn on the body—and lab-on-a-chip systems forimmunoassays and nucleic acid analyses.

One of the largest information tech-nology companies in the USA is

now planning to get into 3D printingas well. The management of the IT gi-ant Hewlett-Packard thinks that theworld market for 3D printers and re-lated software and services will growfrom US$2.2 billion in 2012 to $11billion in 2021. In turn, experts fromthe American market research compa-ny International Data Corporation(IDC) are assuming that 67 percentmore 3D printers are going to be soldthis year than were last year. The med-

ical area of application holds greatpotential for 3D printing—all the wayto the notion of creating entire bodilyorgans with 3D printers someday.Therefore, it is not surprising that 3Dprinting technology will be featuredprominently at this year’s Compamed(Photo 1) in Düsseldorf.

“Indeed, 3D printers represent anexciting combination of material andprocess technology”, explains HorstGiesen, director of both CompamedandMedica at Messe Düsseldorf.“Youshould be very excited about the pro-

gress in this field that will be presentedat Compamed 2014”. The Düsseldorftrade fair management will be high-lighting particularly all of those Com-pamed exhibitors that offer 3D print-ing technology in an overview sectionfor interested visitors under the banner“3D fab + print”.

Printing real heart valvesfrom human cellsIn a joint effort, scientists from the uni-versities Harvard, MIT, Sydney andStanford have compiled a comprehen-sive research report that experts in thefield of medical 3D printing consider agreat leap forward. According to thescientists’ own account, the study de-scribes a breakthrough in the way 3Dtissue with blood vessels can be print-ed. The supply of blood is crucial forthe function of organs: sufficient oxy-gen must be delivered and waste andtoxic substances must be removed fromthe circulation. The report tells scien-tists about the solution that enablesblood vessels to be produced with a 3Dprinter. A special printer is employedthat is able to print out the smallestfibres now possible, and also connectthem with each other. This type ofprinting can virtually duplicate the ves-sel structure in a human organ. Subse-quent to printing, the fibres are coatedwith human cells and with a special

technology worn on the body (so-calledwearables), and for compact medicaltechnology. Not only is the sensor tech-nology necessary for providing func-tionality in these applications required;so is a safe energy supply. Batteries and

Highlights of Compamed 2014 include the Compamed High Tech Forum in Hall 8a,run by IVAM, the International Association of Microtechnology, and the Com-pamed Suppliers Forum organised by the journal Devicemed in Hall 8b. All the time, microsystem technolo-gy (MST) is increasingly being consid-ered for implants, for measurement

German researchers from the Tech-nical University of Berlin and the Ger-man Heart Centre in Berlin also areworking on 3D printer solutions. Thevision of Professor Hartmut Schwandt,head of the 3D laboratory at TU Berlin,entails printing actual heart valvesfrom human cells. Based on computedtomography, a heart valve structurecould be custom-printed for a particu-lar patient; then the structure could bepopulated with cells from the individ-ual’s own body, in effect forming anatural heart valve.A special syntheticmaterial is provided for the structure.This will be decomposed by the body,but initially it maintains the correctshape of the construction. Accordingto Professor Schwandt, the requiredcell material will be generated from atissue donation and cultivated for sev-eral months in a bioreactor by means

High-performance batteriesfor a safe energy supplyAlong these lines, the British companyAccutronics is bringing to its Com-pamed display a new development thathas just been awarded a £100,000prize by the United Kingdom’s innova-tion agency. This is the high-perfor-mance Chameleon battery. Thanks toan integrated microchip, this solutionenables intelligent communication be-tween the battery and the chargingdevice. Voltage and power are thensupplied by means of the charging de-vice only if required.This not only pre-vents overcharging, but also limits en-ergy consumption.

The intelligent chargers, flexiblewith regard not only to design but alsoto use, can be equipped with single ormultiple charging slots to handle alter-nating or direct current. At the outsetof its comercial availability, the CMXbattery-and-charger series is being pro-vided for use in ventilators, X-ray de-

tectors, nebulisers, patient monitorsand endoscopy data recorders.

Back to the product trends: TheHahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft institutefor microtechnology and informationtechnology (HSG-Imit) exhibits thepotential of lab-on-a-chip systems withits disposable Lab Disc plastic test car-rier about the size of a compact disc(Photo 2). This development is a tech-nology platform on which immuno-assays and nucleic acid analyses can becarried out. Time-critical diagnoses ofinflammatory responses in newbornstriggered by bacteria and the qualitycontrol of foodstuffs and drinking wa-ter are the first applications.

Lab-on-a-chip systemsfor use in clinical trialsHSG-Imit has built a pilot line forbatches of 10,000 to 50,000 tests. Suchquantities are a prerequisite for prov-ing the efficiency of the new technolo-gy in clinical studies.
