OPENING HYMN IN CHRIST ALONE

In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song, This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All; Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe; This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save; Till on that cross, as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied; For every sin on Him was laid. Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground his body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am his and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death; This is the power of Christ in me. From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from his hand. Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

THE ACCLAMATION

Celebrant Alleluia! Christ is risen! People The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

THE COLLECT FOR PURITY

All Almighty God, to You all hearts are open, all desires known, and from You no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MAGNIFICAT (The Song of Mary) – In Unison

My soul magnifies the Lord, * and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; For he has regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from now on, * all generations will call me blessed; For he that is mighty has magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on those who fear him, * throughout all generations. He has shown the strength of his arm; * he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones, * and has exalted the humble and meek. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent empty away. He, remembering his mercy, has helped his servant Israel, * as he promised to our fathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit.

Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON (The people sit) DEUTERONOMY 6: 20-25

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 66: 1-9 (The people stand)

Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.”

Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him, who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations— let not the rebellious exalt themselves.

Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

THE GRADUAL CELTIC ALLELUIA

THE GOSPEL

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. People Glory to You, Lord Christ. JOHN 14: 1-14

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to You, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON (The Very Rev.) Allen Kannapell THE NICENE CREED (Please stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of

the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his Kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

For those serving on the “front lines” in the current pandemic, including many in our parish and extended families; for their protection, for the safe-guarding of all at high risk, and for us all, that You would be our Almighty Fortress and Strong Defense,

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. We give thanks to you, O God, and ask your blessing for all mothers: for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers some day and for those whose hope to have children has been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all persons who have mothered others in any way, those who have been our substitute mothers and we who have done so for those in need.

Reader: Lord, in your strong and tender mercy. People: Hear our Prayer.

You are invited to add your own prayers at this time.

Celebrant: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN (The people sit or kneel if able)

Celebrant Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Page 9: Companion Bulletin for Livestream THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF ... · the livestream, and light candles before the service begins. OPENING HYMN IN CHRIST ALONE In Christ alone my hope is found;

Amen.

THE OFFERTORY LORD I NEED YOU

Lord I come, I confess; bowing here I find my rest, And without You I fall apart; You're the one that guides my heart.

Chorus Lord I need You, oh, I need You, ev'ry hour I need You; My one defense, my righteousness, oh, God how I need You.

Where sin runs deep your grace is more; where grace is found is where You are. And where You are, Lord, I am free; holiness is Christ in me. Where You are, Lord, I am free; holiness is Christ in me.

Bridge So teach my song to rise to You when temptation comes my way. And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You; Jesus You're my hope and stay. And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You; Jesus You're my hope and stay.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but chiefly are we bound to praise You for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for He is the true Paschal Lamb, who was offered for us, and has taken away the sin of the world; who by his death has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again has won for us everlasting life. THE LORD'S PRAYER

Celebrant And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

As we receive Communion together by intention, you are invited to meditate on Jesus’ presence with us using the following prayer:

Prayer for Spiritual Communion Dear Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love You above all

things, and I desire to possess You within my soul. And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, I beseech You to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to You,

together with all your faithful people, and I embrace You with all the affections of my soul. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

COMMUNION WORSHIP

OUR GOD REIGNS (HOW LOVELY ON THE MOUNTAINS)

How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him who brings good news, good news Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness: Our God reigns, our God reigns! Chorus Our God reigns, our God reigns, our God reigns, our God reigns! He had no stately form, He had no majesty that we should be drawn to Him. He was despised and we took no account of Him;

yet now He reigns with the Most High. It was our sin and guilt that bruised and wounded Him;

it was our sin that brought Him down. When we, like sheep, had gone astray, our Shepherd came,

and on his shoulders bore our shame.

Page 12: Companion Bulletin for Livestream THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF ... · the livestream, and light candles before the service begins. OPENING HYMN IN CHRIST ALONE In Christ alone my hope is found;

12

Meek as a lamb that's led out to the slaughterhouse, dumb as a sheep before its shearer,

His life ran down upon the ground like pouring rain that we might be born again.

Out of the tomb He came with grace and majesty; He is alive, He is alive! God loves us so; see here, his hands, his feet, his side - yes, we know He is alive!

THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Celebrant Let us pray. All Heavenly Father, we thank You for feeding us with the spiritual food of the

most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we who receive physically and by intention are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out to do the work You have given us to do, to love and serve You as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN I SING THE MIGHTY POWER OF GOD

I sing the mighty pow'r of God that made the mountains rise, That spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; The moon shines full at his command, and all the stars obey. I sing the goodness of the Lord that filled the earth with food. He formed the creatures with his Word and then pronounced them good. Lord, how thy wonders are displayed where'er I turn my eye! If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky. There's not a plant or flow'r below but makes thy glories known, And clouds arise and tempests blow by order from thy throne, While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in thy care And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there.

THE DISMISSAL

ANNOUNCEMENTS

All our in-person events have been suspended at this time (to be resumed as soon as possible), but our community life continues together online:

• The “Chat” feature on our livestream services is a great way to interact with brothers and

sisters who are worshiping with us! Here are seven ways to use the chat: o Pre-Service. Log on a few minutes early and greet everyone else! o During worship. Praising God is always appropriate! Since we can’t hear you

sing, type out a brief praise. o Sermon responses. This is your chance to encourage the preacher to “preach

it!” with an Amen or Hallelujah without even opening your mouth. o Prayers of the People. Any request on your heart that you’d like God’s people

to lift up in prayer. (Remember to save sensitive requests for the prayer chain, though.) They will be collected by 1100 am and sent into the church to be read at the end of the Prayers of the People.

o Passing of the Peace. Every single person can share God’s peace! Take this one beyond the live chat and send some texts.

o During Communion Worship. This is a great time to share something about God that you’ve seen more clearly this morning.

o Post-Service. After service Ryan usually plays extra music, which is a sweet moment of thanking God for the opportunity to worship Him. This is a transition time when both praises ring out and the coffee hour chat begins! Since the chat gets cut off once we end the livestream, consider talking with your Community Care Group about a post-service Zoom meeting just to exchange “face-to-face” hellos.

• AAA Pregnancy Center’s Mother’s Day through Father’s Day Contributions – will be handled differently this year. Since there are no baby bottles to distribute or bring back, please choose your own container, collect loose change or bills, or write a check. We will let you know who we will be getting them to the center, in the near future.

• Community Care Groups are well underway with joyful virtual meetings! Our community group meetings include a call-in feature if computer or internet access is a problem for you. If you aren’t connected yet with a group, and would like to be, please contact the Office at (734) 367-0422 or [email protected]. You are not alone – come participate in a group and find out how true that is!
