The company is 15 minutes from Zhejiang University. These components have a predictable wear out mechanism the evaporation of the electrolyte. Electrolytic Capacitors In addition to ambient temperature, there are many other factors affecting the life of the electrolytic capacitors. It is important to: Choose components carefully. Utilize quality suppliers. Derate capacitors appropriately. Manage the ripple current and component temperature. Electrolytic Capacitors As a general rule, the life of any give electrolytic capacitor degrades by half with each 10C rise in component temperature. Electrolytic Capacitors Driver Efficiency Case Temp (C) Case Temperature vs Efficiency (based on typical 150W driver) For a given ambient temperature and operating point, the case temperature of the driver will largely be determined by driver efficiency. Electrolytic Capacitors Product Life (hours) Driver Efficiency Life Time vs Efficiency (Typical, calculated at 55 Ambient Temperature, assume 10,000 hour long life aluminum caps are used In this example, moving from 85% efficiency to 95% efficiency increases product life by a factor of 3.5X. Note: this is using the exact same high quality capacitors. ROI and the Power Electronics The power electronics (driver) impacts the actual return on investment due to: Product cost Efficiency Life Reliability The design of the driver has significant impact on the project ROI. The Triple Impact of Efficiency Higher efficiency in the driver has a triple impact: It uses lowers energy costs resulting in direct operating savings. It lowers component temperatures resulting in longer life Lower component temperatures also produce higher reliability. The difference is bigger than you might think. Efficiency vs Lifetime Power Consumption For the same 150W supply over a lifetime of 50,000 hours: 95% uses 395 kWh 85% uses 1324 kWh At 9 cents / kWh, the 95% converter saves $83.60 over its life. Cost savings of $ 209k for an installation with 2500 drivers Energy Usage (kWh) Driver Efficiency Efficiency vs Power Loss For a 150W supply: 95% = 7.9W loss 85% = 28.5W loss Thats not a 10% difference its a factor of 3.3x All of the power loss is dissipated in the driver as heat. Pdiss (W) Driver Efficiency Heat Impacts Reliability & Life Failure Rate Time T1 Heat both increases failure rate and shortens product life. T2T3T4 Reliability Failure rates of LED drivers are dominated by the semiconductor devices which includes the main MOSFETs, diodes, control ICs, and opto-coupler. The electrolytic capacitors contribute only a small portion of the driver failure rate. The failure rates of semiconductor devices are largely dependent on the operating temperature. Typically the failure rate of an LED driver is increased by 25-40% for every 10C increase in the case temperature (and internal components). 38 Reliability Our demonstrated reliability at this site is already in excess of 3 million hours. Efficiency vs Reliability All other factors being the same, the heat dissipated to power loss has a significant impact on reliability. In this example, an 85% eff. driver has half the reliability of a 95% eff. driver. Calculated MTBF Driver Efficiency Example based on a typical 150W driver. Standard Certifications The Inventronics products meet (or will meet) most safety certification requirements. Some certifications may require a minor adjustment (e.g. wire color) and therefore a separate part number.
