A Message from the President

For those who may not know, the McLean Community Center will be closing in Spring 2017 for renovations. This closure includes MCP’s current home, The Alden Theatre.

Rest assured, the show will go on!

Our Spring 2017 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed April 14-30, 2017 at Vinson Hall.

This summer, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be performed July 7-16, 2017 at McLean High School.

Up to this point, MCP has achieved success by carefully selecting shows and budgeting expenses. Our revenues are derived almost exclusively from box office receipts, augmented by highly appreciated grants from the Arts Council of Fairfax County, several tons of volunteer elbow grease, and – for the past several seasons – the generosity of MCP Patrons.

With the support of our Patrons, in 2012 MCP was able to lease a shop facility in Herndon. The space has been refurbished by MCP volunteers and equipped with platform storage to accomodate furniture and props, thus freeing up the floor space for set construction. The scene shop has been an invaluable asset and is vital to MCP’s success. The continued tax-deductible support of our patrons is critical to helping MCP defray the monthly lease costs. To do theatre for the community, in the community, with the community, and sustained by the community.

Director’s Notes

Why Company, now, in 2017? Why bring back Stephen Sondheim’s negative version of marriage and relationships that was clearly his version of the straight couples of New York City in the 1970s. He obviously had a disdain for them, relationships and marriage.

This is one of many scores that we all listened to in the 70s, ran out to buy the first day the album was released and played it over and over again, putting our own staging to it. And then got to the theatre to watch and... well... all came out going, “Really?” This was not a happy show, it was rather sad... Bobby struggles with committing fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage.

Now it’s 2017. People are different, relationships are different, and so are marriages. Yes, we do question, wonder “What if?”, and wonder what we lost or gave up; but we have also learned that it’s OK to wonder or doubt as long as you realize what you DO have, and the beauty and strength of it.

I’ve asked this cast to put aside the negativity and make Bobby “likeable” along with the rest of the characters. People would always come out of the theatres saying they “Didn’t like any of them.” You see, after over 40 years, I do like them... today. And I hope you will, too.

This cast has worked very hard for months, reshaping their characters to meet my vision. John Niles, the music director, has tweaked and created moments that will make the hair on your arms stick up. We have molded a different story, without changing the integrity of the original script. More positive moments to push Bobby to be hopeful and “ready” for life, not afraid of it.

So, welcome to Company. It’s time for the cast to reach out and give it to you. Enjoy.

Nikki Arbiter (New Yorker) is an NTSU voice major who has performed a diverse range of characters from The Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, Domina in A Funny Thing Happened… and Ms. Anderson in A Little Night Music. You may recognize her from a Mattress Warehouse commercial. Thanks go to her always patient and loving family.

Christopher Borton (New Yorker) is excited to be back at MCP, last seen in Drowsy Chaperone (quartet, superintendent). Other local roles have included Johnny in Curtains, Rusty Charlie in Guys & Dolls, and Robert Livingston in 1776. During the day, he works with the American Red Cross Blood Services as a project manager. He and his wife perform with the Voce Chamber Singers and have also music directed shows together. Thanks to Alana for reaching out and to Sharon for making me part of this fun Company!

Carla Crawford (Sarah, Feb. 3-12) is thrilled to be making her MCP debut. She most recently portrayed Truvy Jones in LTA’s production of Steel Magnolias. Other favorites include Titanic (Alice Beane), Sweeney Todd (SMP), Great American Trailer Park Musical (DS) and a Laker Girl in LTA’s Spamalot. Carla sends hugs and kisses to her children, Trice, Grace and Witt, and to her patient husband, Tom. Special thanks to this extremely talented cast and crew.

Gary Bernard DiNardo (David) has long wished to play in Company, and is thankful for the opportunity. Last seen as Emory in The Boys in the Band (DS), and as a Pig in Shrek (RCP), he is proud to join the MCP family. Thanks to his parents, whose support could have bolstered the Titanic.

R. Kieth Flores (Paul) is excited to be in his 4th MCP show, with appearances in The Drowsy Chaperone, Man of La Mancha and Guys & Dolls. Other shows - Once Upon A Mattress (Minstrel) and The King & I (King) (SP); The Fantasticks (Bellamy, VTC); Wizard of Oz (Hickory/Tinman; Zemfira); Ragtime (LTA). Kristina Friedgen (Marta/Co-Choreographer) returns to MCP having appeared in Jerry’s Girls directed by Stefan Sittig. Recent roles include: Frumasarah in Fiddler on the Roof (WATCH nomination), Petra in A Little Night Music, and Belle Carroca in My Favorite Year. She has worked with LTA as a director (A Streetcar Named Desire and Woman in Black), TAP as an assistant choreographer (A Chorus Line), and DTC as a director/choreographer (The Drowsy Chaperone). Kristina holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Maryland.

Cara Giambrone (Jenny) is thrilled to make her MCP debut in Company. She has been seen regionally as Georgie in The Full Monty (LTA), Elizabeth Benning in Young Frankenstein (TAT), Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins (RCP) and Sunset Boulevard (RCP). Other credits include Blood Brothers (Mrs. Johnstone), Nunsense (Robert Anne), Man of La Mancha (Aldonza), Songs for a New World, I Love You…Now Change, Funny Girl and the title role in Peter Pan. TV appearances include Nightmare Next Door, For My Man, House of Cards, Do No Harm and VEEP. Love to Gary!

Scott Graham (Harry) has recently played Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet (CRT), George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (CFTC) and Shelly in Glengary Glen Ross (GP). He designed set and lights for Shutter (ATC), lights for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (CRT), and lights for Doubt (CFTC). Favorite roles have been Billy in The House of Blue Leaves, Pozzo in Waiting for Godot, Orin in Children of a Lessor God, and Eugene in Brighton Beach Memoirs. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis on directing, writing and acting from Saint Leo University and attended graduate film school at American University in Washington, DC. Scott is currently the Senior Video Editor and Motion Graphics Artist at the National Press Club and is father to three wonderful kids.

Sharon Grant (Susan) previously appeared at the Alden as Edith in Pirates of Penzance, as Rosemary in How to Succeed…, and as Bonnie in Anything Goes. Kate Keifer (Amy, Costume Coordination) returns to the Alden Theatre after previously appearing in How to Succeed… and Godspell. She was last seen on stage as Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins (RCP). Other shows include Les Miserables, Curtains (WATCH nomination), Honk!, Mame, and City of Angels, all with RCP. Love and thanks to Steve who always says yes and to Jack, Jane and Olive, her own “company.” Viva!

Rick Kenney (Larry) merrily joins this Company for his first show in McLean, after a few dozen other community theater productions in the past 40-plus years. Recent roles include the Stage Manager in Our Town and ensemble in Les Miserables (RCP), Ben Weatherstaff in The Secret Garden (NextStop), and Grandpa Gellman in Caroline, or Change (ESP). A long-time resident of Reston, his favorite role offstage was teaching drama at Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon, where he still shows up as a substitute teacher occasionally.

Lucia LaNave (Church Singer) Lucia is ecstatic to be in this brilliant production! Most recently she originated the role of Helene in Pray for the Dead, and she played Dorothy in Zemfira Stage’s The Wizard of Oz, earning a BroadwayWorld.com DC Award nomination. She thanks the creative team for giving a 16 year old a chance to do this difficult, mature show. She has loved every minute. Enjoy the show!

Matt Liptak (Bobby) has appeared locally in shows at LTA, TAP, and Dominion Stage. Company marks Liptak’s debut with the McClean Community Players. Recent notable roles include Patsy in LTA’s SPAMALOT (WATCH nominee), Riff Raff in LTA’s The Rocky Horror Show (LTA Awards Winner) and Nicky-Trekkie-Bad Idea Bear in LTA’s Avenue Q (WATCH nominee, LTA Awards Winner). Liptak thanks everyone in his life that has helped him understand what it means to be loved and to be alive.

Melissa Pieja (April) is thrilled to be performing in her first MCP production. She has been singing and dancing since she could walk and talk and is so happy to be back on the stage again. Her favorite past roles include Jekyll and Hyde (Lucy), A Chorus Line (Val) and Wizard of Oz (Glinda). By day Melissa is a Microbiologist with ATCC in Manassas and mother to a beautiful, spunky four year old daughter, Eva. In her spare time Melissa enjoys running, entertaining and traveling. She would like to thank her wonderful family (Jon, Jack, Ben, & Eva) for all of their support, and wishes everyone in the cast and crew a fabulous show!

Alana D. Sharp (Joanne, Costume Coordination) is thrilled to make her debut at MCP in this iconic role! Favorite roles include M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias (LTA), Mdm. Thernardier in Les Miserables, Lucy in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Nina Weiss in Brooklyn Boy (RCP) and Aunt Dete in Heidi (ESP). Alana earned a BFA in Acting from Wright State University. Many thanks to this wonderful cast, crew & staff for such a wonderful experience and love to Sam, Brie & Sebastian for letting mommy out to play.

Jerry Gideon (Co-Producer) This is Jerry’s 13th production with MCP and his second stint as producer, having co-produced MCP’s production of 1776. He has worked on stage and film as an actor, as well as behind the scenes crew, prop master, set decorator, assistant director, and assistant stage manager. Jerry earned a WATCH nomination for MCP’s production of Deathtrap (props, special effects). Jerry has been working behind the scenes, producing props, special effects, and set dressing since high school drama – more than a few decades ago! Of course, his real love is to be on stage or in front of a camera, but that is a story for another bio. Jerry is a member of the MCP Board of Directors, and current MCP President. Jerry wishes to thank his loving family for allowing him the time to pursue his passion.

Claire Tse (Co-Producer, Sound, Props) is debuting as the Company Co-Producer and Sound to stretch her theatrical CV. Being Props Mistress & Set Dressing for MCP’s Comic Potential, 1776, and Calendar Girls; her favorite roles were as backstage ninja for Footloose, La Cage Aux Folles, Rumors and Deathtrap. Being on Sound Book for Jesus Christ Superstar invoked Claire’s interest in Sound. Many thanks and love for all the cast, crew and family support through the background drama and comedies to produce our memorable show.

Production Bios

Sharon Veselic (Director) is excited to be back home in Virginia/D.C. after 12 years in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. In that time, she directed 29 productions in local theaters: from Dramas, to Comedies to Musicals to Children’s Theater. She is a graduate of St. Leo College in Theater and Childhood Education with a MA from FSU in Education. Years ago, she worked in the area Dinner Theaters, Adventure Theater and was the Directing Intern at ARENA STAGE for three years before moving to NYC, where she quickly moved into production in film in Television as a Production Coordinator. Sharon is retired, and made the decision to return to what she loved most: Community Theater. Since her return just months ago she has directed at Little Theater of Alexandria: Steel Magnolias, and after Company will be headed to Reston to direct the classic Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She thanks this cast and staff for being so smart, strong and talented. And as always, thank you to Sally, without her none of this would be possible. 

John Edward Niles (Music Director) was the Artistic Director and Conductor of Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia. He has also conducted productions with Virginia Opera. He has worked with COLVA Productions and Riverside Dinner Theatre. He is presently the Program Director of the Lear/Stewart Emerging Singers Program and the Wagner Studies Division of the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. He has conducted in Germany as part of European American Productions as well as Euro-East (Prague), Scan-Mus (Helsinki) and EURAM (Austria).

Lori Roddy (Orchestra Manager) is happy to be back at McLean, working on this production of Company. She has worked as a music director, vocal director, pianist and performer, sings with the Potomac United Methodist Church choir and performs with Washington Vocal Artists. Many thanks to Sharon, Rosie, John, a great production staff, cast, crew, and orchestra! Love to David.

Rosemary Dyer (Vocal Director) has worked on several MCP shows, and is thrilled to be back. She completed her musical studies as a Fulbright scholar to the Rome Opera House. She has been a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony twice and has appeared three times at the White House, as well as the Smithsonian. She founded the Prince George’s Opera while pursuing her career as an organist-choir master in sacred music, and as a specialist in American musical theater. Her voice students include Metropolitan Opera audition winners as well as featured artists on and off Broadway. She is Music Director of the Potomac United Methodist Church and the prestigious Washington Vocal Artists.

Melanie Barber (Co-Choreographer) is a DC-area dance instructor and choreographer. Company is her first show with MCP. Previous credits include A Grand Night For Singing, The Marvelous Wonderettes (MP), My Fair Lady, The Music Man (PTC). Enjoy the show!

Shayne Gardner (Stage Manager) made her stage debut at 7, is a life-long participant in community theatre, and marked her 20th year working in the Alden Theatre in 2015. Shayne fills many roles for MCP, from serving on the Board, set construction, and even recently appeared in Calendar Girls as Cora. She also works with ArtStream, which provides performance opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental challenges.

Bill Glikbarg (Set Design) is a founding member of McLean Community Players and the current Chairman of the Board. He enjoys designing and building scenery for various groups in Northern Virginia, most recently with ACCT and LTA. The Alden Theatre is one of his favorite places to work because of the excellent backstage facility. At LTA he did Twentieth Century in the 2013 season with John Downing, winning a WATCH award for set deisgn. Bill is retired from consulting to the federal government on large IT projects, and lives in Great Falls with his wife, Lynne.

Lynne Glikbarg (Lighting Design) has been associated with MCP and its predecessors for over twenty years. Her most recent productions for MCP include Comic Potential, Footloose, 1776, Calendar Girls, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Game’s Afoot, Perfect Wedding, Damn Yankees, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, Oliver!, and Evita. Lynne is retired and living with her husband Bill in Great Falls, where she sandwiches in babysitting for her grandchildren between international travels.

Bob Zeigler (Sound Design) has done sound, lighting, and set construction for a number of theater groups in the area. His sound credits include How to Succeed…Trying and A Funny Thing…Forum for CAST, Deathtrap for VTC, and co-design on Joseph and…Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar for MCP. He shares theater love with Joan (the real thespian in the family) and their Chihuahua pups.

Rebecca Harris (Hair & Makeup Designer) is grateful for being invited to work on MCP’s production of Company. Her previous hair design credits over include The Great American Trailer Park: The Musical, Dirty Blond, and Steel Magnolias. Thanks to our wonderful director for inviting her to take part in this show. Rebecca would like to thank the entire cast & crew for of their hard work, and her friends and family for all their love.

Adrienne Kammer (Scenic Painter) is delighted to be working again with the MCP. Recent credits include MCP’s productions of 13, Barefoot in the Park, Jesus Christ Superstar, Calendar Girls, and 1776. While living in Belgium she worked with NATO’s S.H.A.P.E. Players, receiving the Topper award for the scenic painting of Man of La Mancha. The US Army Festival of the Arts awarded her third place for set painting and properties management for The Adventures of Pinocchio. Her most memorable set was Oklahoma!, where she literally painted an acre of corn “as high as an elephants eye”. When not set painting, she is ‘Mommy’ to two cute dogs and ‘general contractor’ for her wonderful, supportive husband, John.

Carol Strachan (Asst. Stage Manager) has produced Unnecessary Farce, Jesus Christ Superstar and Oklahoma! and has directed Social Security, The Importance of Being Earnest, Brigadoon, Perfect Wedding and Oh Coward! for MCP. She has appeared on stage in Guys and Dolls, Grease and A Christmas Carol. Last year Carol was on stage in Amadeus (MCP) and Calendar Girls and Fawlty Towers (BP).

Adrian Steel (Asst. Stage Manager) has worked on MCP’s The Drowsy Chaperone, Man of La Mancha, Damn Yankees, La Cage aux Folles, Guys and Dolls, 13, Calendar Girls, Unnecessary Farce, and Footloose. He has also worked recently backstage at LTA, TAP (on the Tinker Bell team, which won a 2015 WATCH award for special effects), RCP, and RMT. He expresses his appreciation to the cast and crew who have been wonderful to work with.

Cathy Farnsworth (Publicity) has enjoyed morphing from a technical editor in her pre-retirement life to a volunteer part-time publicist for MCP. Looking forward to opening night and a great run for the talented and hard-working cast and crew of Company.

Tula Pendergrast (Ad Sales) was a board member/Vice President of MCP for many years, and since 2007 has worked in various capacities behind-the-scenes, helping to make the community aware of the McLean Community Players’ quality theatre productions. She is a former ESOL teacher for Fairfax County.

This fellowship woodwind quintet from the University of Maryland takes its name from the Swahili word for “bridge.” Coming together from around the country and abroad, their wide-ranging performances include ongoing outreach to Tanzania.
