The definition of SCADA is “Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition”. The major function of SCADA is for acquiring data from remote devices such as valves, pumps, transmitters etc. and providing overall control remotely from a SCADA Host software platform. This provides process control locally so that these devices turn on and off at the right time, supporting your control strategy and a remote method of capturing data and events (alarms) for monitoring these processes. SCADA Host platforms also provide functions for graphical displays, alarming, trending and historical storage of data.

PLC | SCADA | Long Range Wireless

Case Study

Wireless Ethernet bridges were employed in the city of Tulkarm to link multiple pump stations, wells and reservoirs sites together allowing unified control and monitor from a single location in addition to automated control based on predefined scenarios.

Pump Stations, Wells and Reservoirs Tulkarm / Palestine

Area: Middle East

Type: Pump Stations

Local and Remote Control via graphically rich SCADA system

The pump station pumps water from the wells and all the way to the reservoirs, yet in other locations, the well may directly pump to the reservoirs. This water network was essential for Tulkarm having a radius of almost 20Km in total.

“One of the many success stories of integrating high-level communications solution to solve an industrial automation challenge.

Rami Al Jayeh, GM of Spacia Systems

The Challenge

In a crowded city where proper infrastructure is missing, the possibility of installing fiber cable is narrow. Yet several distant locations containing pump stations, wells and reservoirs were required to have a central and unified control and monitor. It was immediately realized that a special design was needed for the communication between sites and the central station that can handle real time monitoring.

Project Features

Three pump stations equipped with MCC panels

Soft-starter, YD and DOL Motor Starters

Six Water Wells and Four Reservoirs

All Sites Utilizing 2.4GHz Wireless Bridge

Local and Remote Control via SCADA System

ATS System and Standby Generator

Total IO Signals on SCADA is 1600

The Benefit

The results were very convenient and the whole system empowered the water infrastructure in Tulkarm, providing water to additional populated neighborhoods thus expanding the total area covered by the water network. The Tulkarm Municipality was very pleased with the cost effective and well implemented solution.

The Solution

Spacia System Read more at www.spacia.com.jo

SPCS105-A1-1214

Three pump stations, each one equipped with an MCC panel that includes soft-starters, YD and DOL motor starters established. With main incomers varying and reaching up to 800A depending on pump ratings, ATS panels were employed for the standby generators in case of power failure.

Regarding the control, modular PLC panels were assembled and programmed, processing IO signals varying from 80-200 signals per station. After studying the process plan required for the operation of the system, advanced programming procedures were implemented to produce an error free, self alarming automation and control mechanism that makes it easy for the operators to handle.

The real challenge of providing fluent and reliable communications between panels in circumstances were it is difficult to install fiber cables for sites that are distant from each other several kilometers, long range 2.4GHz wireless Ethernet bridges were utilized to overcome this issue.

These wireless bridges, equipped with Yagi antennas, provided robust network over up to 10 Km line-of-sight-distance between the stations. This ensured smooth monitoring and control for the whole system from a central SCADA equipped station.

In addition to the remote control via SCADA over wireless network, local HMIs were employed on each station guaranteeing local control and monitor in emergency cases or general maintenance, giving another depth of safety and security for operators.

The overall radius of the project was estimated to be around 20Km, with 1600 IO signal being processed and transmitted in real-time.

PLC | SCADA | GPRS

Case Study

The project aims to upgrade and expand the water network supply system for Karak governorate and adjacent areas in order to reduce NRW and meet the demand for the year 2030 for a population of 350,000.

Water Loss Reduction Program Karak / Jordan

Area: Middle East

Type: Pump Stations

Local and Remote Control via graphically rich SCADA system

Establishing of water network supply system for Karak governorate and adjacent areas in order to reduce NRW and meet the demand for the year 2030 for a population of 350,000. The project components include PLC controlled pumping stations linked with centralized SCADA system.

“The project proceeded smoothly without problems and was totally completed in one year.”

Engineer W. Kh., Project Manager

The Challenge

Five pumping stations were to be rehabilitated and established in distant and remote locations. The purpose of these stations was to pump water to new stations and new reservoirs. The remote stations were to be connected to the central station and monitored via a SCADA system.

Motor starters type and power rating should match the required load and save power as efficient as possible. One of these stations should have SCADA installed to monitor and control the rest remotely.

Project Features

Five pump stations equipped with MCC and PLC panels

Soft-starters power rating varies from 90-550kW

Power Factor Correction Panels up to 500kVAR

UPS with 3kVA capacity and external battery banks

Manual control on MCC panel, remote panel or HMI

Remote control and monitor via SCADA over GPRS

Modular PLC with I/Os ranging from 100-380 per panel

The Benefit

Al-Karak city upgraded their existing water network and accounted for the increase in demand in the coming years. The design was flexible allowing for future addition of more stations to the system via GPRS/3G/4G or whatever new technologies might arise in the future. The solution is robust and working reliably for years.

The Solution

Spacia System Read more at www.spacia.com.jo SPCS107-A1-0115

Five pumping stations in 5 different distant locations were constructed. Each pump station had an MCC to control the pumps. Based on the loads, the appropriate motor starters to select were soft-starters with Motor Protection Device. This provided complete protection against over/under current, over/under voltage, phase imbalance, earth fault, jam, and long start.

The MCCs had main circuit breaker varying from 400-2500A depending on total load. To optimize power consumption, Power Factor Correction Panels (PFCPs) were deployed in parallel to each main circuit breaker. Ranging from 100-500kVAR, the PFCPs reduced the reactive power significantly, and consequently, lowering the electric bill.

Modular PLC controllers were installed and programmed to process I/Os varying from 100-380 I/O per panel. In addition to its native I/Os, the PLC communicated with the motor protection device via ModBus® protocol to get readings and faults and report them as alarms to the SCADA system while automatically taking an action in case of critical faults.

One of the pump stations, located in Lajjoun, was to host the centralized SCADA system and provide the ability to control and monitor the other four stations remotely. This needed proper communications channel between all the stations and hence a special design was implemented.

In order to link five remote stations, a reliable communications medium is required. Fiber optics were out of the question because the nature of infrastructure made it very difficult to dig and install new conduits, hence the wireless solution was adopted. Wireless radio bridges could not also be used because the distance between the stations was beyond their reach so cellular communication was the most practical solution. Therefore, GPRS modems were installed at each location, sending data from the local PLC to the Lajjoun station’s PLC which is hosting the SCADA system. Bidirectional communications allowed for monitoring and control over the remote stations.

Each MCC panel was equipped with a UPS of 3kVA to ensure the communications are not to be interrupted for any reason.

The main  server  holds  the  core  engine  to monitor

and  control  the  BMS,  CCTV  and  Access  Control

System,  hence  integrating  these  systems  together

and giving easy and quick access  for  the client over

the  whole  system  from  a  single  interface.  The

system can also be accessed remotely in cases it was

needed. This is what can be called a truly Integrated

Building Management System.

The  operation  and  isolation  rooms  were  equipped  with  a

specially  designed  control  system  supplied  by  “Maquet”

called “Tegris”. The BMS was integrated with this system, by

sending and receiving signal from  it, resulting  in a complete

control and monitor over the operation and isolation rooms.

Typical  HVAC  equipments  were  also  controlled  including

AHUs  and  FCUs.  FCU  were  supplied  by  Airmec  and  was

seamlessly  integrated via  the Modbus standard protocol.  In

addition to the HVAC, monitoring the MDBs and SMDBs was

accounted for and alarms were raised in case faults occur.

Around  200  high  specs  cameras  were  installed  in  various

locations and configured  to provide real‐time monitoring as

well  as  sub‐streams  for  recording  on  a  large  storage NVR.

5MP  cameras  were  deployed  to  ICU  rooms  so  that  the

doctors  can monitor  the patients  from  tablets  showing  the

slightest sign of any discomfort the patients may suffer. The

NVR  hosted  advanced  VMS  software  to  provide  additional

features and digital signal processing  for camera  feeds such

as face recognition and record on motion to save space.

The access control system controls over 200 doors equipped

with  card  readers,  magnetic  locks,  exit  buttons  and  door

contact  for  feedback.  Permissions  and  access  levels  are

defined  and  configured using  the  same  server  that  already

controls BMS and CCTV along with card programming device

to  remove  or  add  cards  from  the  database  and  give  each

card  its desired access  level. The access control system also

allowed for the  integration of elevators  in terms of allowing

users  to stop on certain  floors based on  their access  levels.

The  integration  required  special  programming  on  the main

server  to  provide  fast  and  reliable  RS232  communication

with the elevators system.

Finally,  over  around  400  speakers  were  distributed  across

the  floors and  in different places  to ensure  full coverage of

audio  for  all  areas.  Specially  zoning  design was  applied  for

example, dedicating a  zone  for  stairs, others  for each  floor

depending on what department it is. This provides the ability

to  page  each  zone  independently  as  desired.  Most

importantly,  allowing  critical  fire  alarm  messages  to  be

broadcasted overriding any current audio playing.

Three 8 zones audio matrix amplifiers were installed and the sources split between them giving a logical 8x24 audio matrix switch. This was need because of the huge size of the villa which needed 24 stereo audio zones to cover it. Hidden speakers were installed in some locations where any modification to the interior design was not acceptable, as well as installing rock speakers around the pool maintaining the homogeneous landscape design.

Over 128 security sensor scattered around the villa consisting of curtain sensors, gas, heat and smoke detectors as well as magnetic contact were connected to a 64 zone security panel. The client had full control over the security system using its native keypad or the home automation touch-screens.

High definition video distribution system was implemented based on the HDBaseT technology to transfer HD media over UTP. More than 10 –tucked away- HD sources including OSN, Apple TV, media players and more, could be routed to 16 TV locations providing wide diversity of media content to watch and if desired to share the same media such as football game to more than one TV maintaining HD clarity.

Video and audio intercom units were integrated with an IP ready PBX system from Avaya using SIP protocol.

Over 200 lighting circuits and 10 shutters were controlled by assembling and installing 5 dimming panels, each assigned a region of the villa, and integrating the light control4 with keypads, touch-screens, mobile devices, and even motion sensors. Other wireless lighting dimmers were placed locally inside each room to act as an emergency/backup feature in case the connectivity with the lighting panels was disrupted for some reason.

Four 24 port Gigabit Ethernet switches and one PoE switch were installed along with six access points to cover and hold robust network connectivity, providing a crucial solution for the other system because the home automation system is IP based. Link aggregation between two switches was established to connect a remote switch dedicated for the perimeter IP cameras.

Multi-room audio distributed across 8 zones including landscape zone and rock speakers were installed. Along with 2 iPod docks, multi-tuner and Digital media as sources, the audio system allowed for audio messages to be announced across the house on certain events such as low diesel level.

64 security zones connected to more than 70 sensors consisting of magnetic contacts, beam detector and motion sensors, ensured the security of the whole premises. Because of its integration with the whole system, security zones can be armed and monitored remotely or even programmed to trigger actions such as using the motion sensors of the security system to turn on lights in certain areas when disarmed. CCTV cameras were displayed and broadcasted throughout the rooms via the SMATV system supporting DVR control through home automation interfaces and remote controls.

Centralized control panels were assembled to control more than 110 lighting circuits and 14 shutters. Along with 6 buttons led lit keypads spread throughout the house, light and shutter control could not get easier in which some areas light up automatically, after sunset, upon detecting motion.

Intercom units on main entrances were linked with the house’s PBX system to answer and open gates in addition to opening doors using the touch screens and mobile application of the automation system.

The network infrastructure was designed carefully and built from scratch to ensure smooth operation and robust connectivity between home automation components, personal computers and the Internet.

Due to the client’s frequent travels, some system programming and network configuration were performed to allow the use of smart phones over 3G to have full control and monitoring over the whole system. Because the Control4 authentication procedure is implementing over SSL (Secure Socket Layer), controlling the house over the internet could not get more secure.
