Flight Inspection – Systems and Services

The company designs and manufactures flight inspection systems and other data processing systems for airborne real-time applications and is licensed as a design and manufacturing organization.

In 1990 Aerodata won the contract to design and manufacture ‘new generation’ digital flight inspection instrumentation for the calibration aircraft fleet of the German Air Traffic Control Authority BFS (now DFS), and subsequently for privatized service provider Flight Inspection International, who now is named Flight Calibration Services. The company has since supplied similar equipment to Swisscontrol, the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau, the Royal Norwegian Air Force, the Dutch Aerospace Laboratory NLR, the Slovak Aviation Inspectorate, Airservices Australia and to the Civil Aviation Authority of Sudan. Adding to Aerodata’s success in 1996, the organization’s former subsidiary company in the United Kingdom, Flight Precision Ltd, was awarded the contract to calibrate all military navaids of the Royal Air Force, including their overseas stations. The contract commenced operation in late 1996. The contract required Aerodata to deliver three new Flight Inspection systems to Flight Precision Ltd. in 1996.

The expertise to provide modern, powerful, and cost-effective flight inspection systems was acquired during various precision navigation and airborne real-time data processing projects. Reliable, airworthy hardware, using ruggedized housings, power supplies and electronic components, designed to operate in extended temperature ranges, are used to produce equipment suitable for civil and military operations. Furthermore, Aerodata’s open system architecture, for both hardware and software, using well established industry standards guarantees compatibility with future computer component developments.

Aerodata's successful design philosophy for the processor, hardware and software, delivers to our customers a fully developed and proven flight inspection system, which, when combined with our commitment to long term product support, allows continuous and cost effective operation throughout the systems lifetime.

Profound skills in satellite navigation technologies, which are further outlined below, have led to the development of the precision phase P-DGPS position reference system for flight inspection. In collaboration with NovAtel, the Canadian GPS manufacturer, Aerodata introduced an inertially coupled phase tracking system as a position reference for flight inspection. With its outstanding precision and integrity, this P-DGPS is again likely to set the pace for flight inspection technology. Furthermore, the knowledge in satellite navigation technology has led the company to provide advanced solutions for land navigation.

From 1999 to 2001, Aerodata undertook a major development effort to upgrade its flight inspection systems with latest technology, which introduced networking and distributed processing capabilities into the systems and which ensures that Aerodata

equipment will remain at the forefront of flight inspection technology for many more years.

Following the technology upgrade, Japan Civil Aviation Bureau awarded to Aerodata the contract for the delivery and integration of 2 flight inspection systems AeroFIS®

into Bombardier Global Express aircraft. Subsequently, Aerodata was contracted to deliver flight inspection systems to the Airport Authority of India, the Ukrainian air navigation service provider, the Greek CAA and the German flight inspection company Flight Calibration Services, the Pakistan CAA, the Indonesian DGAC, Airservices Australia, the Royal Norwegian Air Force and other Air Navigation Service Providers. In the meantime, Aerodata has delivered more than 70 flight inspection systems to its customers; more than 55 systems with current generation Aerodata technology are in operation around the world today.

As a prime contractor, Aerodata delivered a King Air 350 flight inspection aircraft equipped with AeroFIS® to Serbia and Taiwan. Both contracta included aircraft, AeroFIS®, aircraft modification, certification, pilot and operator training as well as post-delivery maintenance and support.

Avionics and Navigation Systems – Production and Integration

High precision navigation systems are steadily growing in significance. On the occasion of a symposium conducted by the German Institute of Navigation (DGON) 1989, the Institute of Flight Guidance and Control at the Braunschweig Technical University gave the world's first public demonstration of a fully automatic landing guided exclusively by satellite and inertial navigation.

Based on the expertise of the Technical University of Braunschweig, Aerodata has developed the AeroNav® navigation and mission management system. AeroNav® couples satellite navigation with inertial navigation and other high precision navigational sensors such as laser altimeters and VOR/DME. Flight-rated on-board

data processing systems developed by Aerodata form the core of this technology and are used both for data acquisition and for process control.

In addition to the navigation functions Aerodata has integrated enhanced mission management functions into AeroNav®. The mission related functions, such as data communication, FLIR interfaces etc., are focused on the operational benefit for special mission aircraft and helicopter operators. AeroNav® is now used as a central mission and navigation system by several police squadrons like the German Federal Border Police.

Aerodata’s communication product, the satellite based telephone system AeroPhone® is in use on more than 500 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. The AeroPhone® enables operators to talk to any phone number worldwide at a price between 10% and 20% of Inmarsat telephone cost. The audio input and output of AeroPhone® is typically interfaced with the aircraft intercom system. Together with the datalink capabilities of AeroPhone® the product is the ideal solution for cockpit crews and operators. The AeroPhone+® product family is the new generation of the SatCom system which provides additional functionality and interfaces like

• Worldwide voice and data communication

Special Mission Aircraft - Modification and Operation

An essential part of Aerodata's business is the equipment and operation of special mission aircraft. The parallel business of instrumentation development and operation enables rapid feedback from system operation to the engineering departments thus ensuring that the benefits of operational experience are taken into account during follow-on development work as soon as possible.

One of the major projects of Aerodata, which influenced the company’s approach to engineering challenges from the very beginning, was the responsibility for the equipment and operation of two Dornier 228 polar research aircraft of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research. The design capabilities for equipment which complies with harsh arctic conditions is reflected in the robustness of all Aerodata systems.

Additionally, Aerodata has equipped and operated other special mission aircraft. A Hawker Siddeley 125 was fitted with sensitive air pollution and airborne wind detection sensors for which the company was awarded environmental protection prizes referred to earlier. The aircraft was operated by Aerodata on behalf of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Within the framework of atmospheric measurement projects, Aerodata has contributed to the German Ozone Research Program by equipping a German Air Force C-160 Transall. In that case, Aerodata took additional responsibility for the management of the associated flight program.

Aerodata has delivered about 20 “low integrated” mission systems to different police customers in Germany, in particular German Federal Police. Further, Aerodata supported the police helicopter squadron of Lower Saxony in the acquisition of three new police helicopters. The program involved the development of the tender specification, bid evaluation, supplier selection for all mission specific subsystems and system integration support.
