COMPANY PROFILE MAIN PRINCIPLES SEMPERMED SEMPERFLEX SEMPERFORM SEMPERTRANS Concentration Our focus on four distinct divisions allows Semperit to effec- tively align its business activities to specific market condi- tions. The allocation of resources to a strategically selected range of products enables us to develop our dynamic inno- vative strength and to continually optimise all value creation processes. Internationalisation By continually expanding our position on existing markets and moving into new markets, we are consistently push- ing ahead with the internationalisation of the Group and effectively leveraging comparative competitive advantages. Foreign business accounts for around 94% of total Group revenue, enabling increased flexibility in procurement, manu- facturing and sales, which opens up new growth perspectives and serves as an additional impetus for growth. Cost leadership One of the most important factors contributing to the suc- cess of the Semperit Group is systematic cost management combined with the continual improvement of productivity at all levels of the company. This has enabled the Group’s com- panies to attain international cost leadership in most business segments. The Semperit Group can only ensure its growth and earnings over the long term by maintaining a sustainably competitive cost position. The Sempermed division is one of the world’s leading suppli- ers of surgical and examination gloves. While rubber protec- tive gloves were originally only used for medical applications, Semperit now manufactures products for a broad range of customers, including the chemicals and food industries. The product portfolio consists of two main groups. The non-ster- ile examination gloves make up the largest share of glove sales, and are also used for industrial applications. The sec- ond product group consists of sterile surgical gloves that are solely targeted at medical customers. The product range also includes a selection of protective gloves for the industry and special gloves. Today, protective gloves are not only manufactured with natural and synthetic rubbers, but also with non-latex plastics. With its Sempermed factories in Thailand, which specialise in manufacturing examination gloves in nitrile and latex varie- ties, Semperit operates the largest production facilities in the world in this segment. The rapidly growing market for non- latex gloves is being covered by the production facilities that were acquired in China in 2002. The high quality sterile surgi- cal gloves are manufactured exclusively in Austria. As one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of moulded and extruded rubber as well as plastic products, the Semperform division supplies customers in a wide range of industries. Semperform is a valued, long-time partner of many original equipment manufacturers around the world in all of its prod- uct segments. Special products in the rail superstructure segment ensure that freight, passenger and metro trains weighing many tons travel safely and quietly. In its cable car equipment segment, Semperit has been developing elastic damping elements to reduce strain and wear on key components in cooperation with the world’s largest cable car manufacturers for more than 60 years. Semperit is also a virtually exclusive supplier of vibration-damping films for all major manufacturers of skis and snowboards. As a global market leader, Semperit produces handrails on three continents for all of the world’s major manufacturers of escalators and moving sidewalks. In the window and door profile segment, Semperit is not only the market leader in Germany, but has also built up a key position in the growth markets of Eastern Europe in recent years. The Sempertrans division is one the world’s largest manu- facturers of conveyor belts. With its wide range of textile carcass and steel carcass transport and conveyor belts and its heavy steel cable belts in all standard dimensions, the divi- sion’s three plants in France, Poland and India cover a broad spectrum of market segments including industrial, transport, commercial, mining and harbour applications. New investments have made it possible to manufacture belts with a width of up to approximately 3.2 metres. State-of-the- art development and manufacturing technologies ensure optimal performance and application flexibility. Continual optimisation at all stages of the manufacturing process guar- antee maximum operating safety and long service lives. Sempertrans also offers its customers conveyor belt instal- lation and maintenance services as well as consulting and development services for the preparation of belt specifica- tions. The company currently operates 18 production sites and a large number of sales offices on three continents: Europe, Asia and America. Semperit develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of rubber and plastic products. Business activities in the Group are split into four divisions: Sempermed, Semperflex, Semperform und Sempertrans. Semperit’s strategic objective is to attain a leading position for its products on international markets. The focus on the above-mentioned business segments, internationalisation along the entire value chain and cost leadership are the main cornerstones of Semperit’s business strategy. The Semperflex division develops, manufactures and sells hydraulic hoses, industrial hoses, elastomer sheeting and wear-resistant products. Semperflex is one of the European market leaders in all of its business areas. The division also enjoys a good position on the markets for hydraulic hoses in North America and Asia. Due to the rapid growth of the Semperflex division, business activities were restructured on an operational level at the beginning of the second quarter of 2007 to encompass two business units: Semperflex Hydraulics (hydraulic hoses and pressure washer hoses) and Semperflex Industrial (industrial hoses, elastomer sheeting and wear-resistant rubber). Hydraulic hoses from Semperit are specially designed to meet the demands of international customers in machine construction, mining and the production of agricultural and construction machinery. They not only fulfil all general stan- dards, but also the specific additional requirements of various market segments. Industrial hoses are widely used by com- mercial, industrial and municipal customers for the safe and reliable transport of solid, liquid and gaseous materials. Nearly all leading European manufacturers use elastomer sheeting from Semperit as a key raw material for the produc- tion of gaskets and stamped parts. Sheeting is also a key product for many technical dealers.

research and developmentThe research and development activities of the Semperit Group focus on the continuing development of materials, manufacturing processes and product qualities for the benefit of the customer, the environment and the company. Accord-ingly, the business areas are provided with support in achiev-ing their operational targets and implementing high quailty standards.

The worldwide research and development centre of the Semperit Group is located in Wimpassing, Austria. It serves as the interface for all Group companies, and coordinates the ongoing know-how transfer and exchange of experience among the individual production plants.

employeesCompetent and motivated employees are essential to suc-cessfully implement the company’s growth strategy. For this reason, Semperit strives to ensure the long-term retention of a highly qualified and motivated staff. It carries out numerous initiatives designed to offer employees attractive jobs within the context of an international business environment, along with targeted training and continuing job education opportu-nities.

For Semperit, it is important that employees thrive in a posi-tive working environment, where each individual can per-sonally develop according to his own skills. The company promotes the professional development of its employees by means of special training programmes which prepare them for future duties and responsibilities. Furthermore, ongoing con-tinuing education measures support employees in their efforts to effectively cope with their challenging work.

In the 2007 financial year, Semperit Group has improved its revenue and earnings for the 17th consecutive year. Group revenue rose by 5.9% to EUR 607.8 million and operating profit (EBIT) climbed disproportionately by 26.0%, to EUR 63.9 million. This was due to targeted price increases and consistent cost management. Due to the negative financial result, earnings before tax only rose slightly by 9.8% above the previous year’s level, to EUR 59.6 million. After deduct-ing minority interests, the consolidated net profit for the year 2007 climbed to 11.5% to EUR 44.6 million.

The positive business environment, particularly in Europe and Asia, served as the basis for the generally good level of orders throughout 2007. North America was the only market in which Semperit did not achieve any appreciable gains in market share, which is mainly related to the unstable eco-nomic situation and the depreciation of the US dollar. More-over, the company was subject to currency translation losses resulting from the consolidation of its sales in euros. Price increases for raw materials, which were quite substantial for several types of rubber as well as for crude oil based chemi-cals and fillers, were offset by targeted procurement planning and increases in Semperit’s selling prices.

Semperit is confident that they will be able to once again announce further improvements for 2008 financial year. Semperit expects to maintain its growth path based on efficiency improvements, an even quicker realisation of mea-sures designed to respond to raw material price hikes and capacity expansion in selected production plants.
