The European standards (EN standards) for butt-welding fi ttings have been published at random intervals up until 2009 and replace the correspon-ding previous national standards (AFNOR, BS, DIN, ÖNORM).

This brochure contains important information regarding the content of the standards especially with respect to the comparison made with the previous, applicable DIN standards.

The corresponding national standards were withdrawn after all 4 sections of the EN-10253 were published. The following is a reference to the corresponding DIN standards.

Fittings for butt-welding

DIN 2605 DIN 2609 DIN 2615 DIN 2616 DIN 2617

EN 10253-1 Wrough carbon steel for general use and without specifi c inspection requirments.

EN 10253-2 Non alloy and ferritic alloy steel with specifi c inspection requirements.

EN 10253-3 Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels without specifi c inspection requirements.

EN 10253-4 Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels with specifi c inspection requirements.

Sections 1 and 3 (EN 10253-1, EN 10253-3) describe fi ttings which do not satisfy the important safety standards in terms of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and which cannot be used for applications according to Article 3, Paragraph 3, of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC). These sections of the EN 10253 will therefore not be considered in this brochure.

EN 10253-2

Fittings for butt-welding; non alloy and ferritic alloy steel with specifi c inspection requirements. (designated as Section -2 in this brochure)

EN 10253-4

Fittings for butt-welding; austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels without specifi c inspection requirements. (designated as Section -4 in this brochure)

Seamless and welded fi ttings for butt-welding are: elbows, concentric and excentric reducers, tees with equal and reduced ends and caps.

The EN 10253-2 and -4 support the underlying safety requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and are harmonized standards for materials.

According to the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and other guidelines (e.g. Guideline 7/19) seamless fi ttings are considered to be materials whereas welded fi ttings, including those that are made from welded pipes, are considered to be components. Details are listed in the informative Appendix ZA of the standards.

These standards defi ne:

– The type of fi tting– The type of steel– The mechanical properties– The dimensions and tolerances– The test requirements– The test certifi cates (inspection certifi cate 3.1 or if optionally requested 3.2 according to EN 10204)– Marking– The preparation for shipment or protective measures and packaging; (the surface protection of the fi ttings is implied under protective measures)

The fi tting are designated as follows:

– Specifi cation of the EN-Standard (EN 10253-2/-4) and specifi cation of the type (A or B)– Material abbreviation or material number– Type of fi tting (bend, tee, reducer, cap) – Outside diameter D/D1*– Wall thickness T/T1** – The bending radius and angle in addition for elbows

*) small outside diameter for tees with reduced junction and reducer **) wall thickness on the weld end D1 for reducers and tees with reduced junction

The selection of the fi ttings and the steel material is the responsibility of the user.

EN standards

EN 10253-2/-4

The EN standards describe the basic specifi cations which can be supplemented with additional options upon request and placement of orders.

Type of fi tting

Typ A

Decreased pressure factor Same wall thickness on the weld ends and on the fi tting body as for a pipe with the same specifi ed wall thickness. Their resistance to internal pressure is less than that of a pipe with the same dia-meter, same wall thickness and made of the same grade of steel.

The required calculation methods are based on the calculation standards defi ned in EN 13480-3 (Section -2 in Appendix A, Section -4 in Appendix B). The respective utilization rate for some of the specifi ed wall thicknesses is listed in tables in the Appendix B (Section -2) and in Appendix C (Section -4).

Typ B

Full pressure factor Increased wall thicknesses on the fi tting body, same resistance to internal pressure as for a pipe with the same diameter, same wall thickness and made of the same grade of steel.

The required calculation methods are based on the calculation standards defi ned in EN 13480-3 (Section -2 in Appendix A, Section -4 in Appendix B). The respective increased wall thickness for some of the specifi ed wall thicknesses is listed in the tables in the Appendix C (Section -2) and in Appendix D (Section -4).

DIN standards

The basic specifi cations are described in the DIN standards. In some of the sections, additional options are specially labeled for use when agreed upon in the order.

DIN 2605-1, DIN 2615-1, DIN 2616-1

Decreased pressure factor These standards apply to steel fi ttings for butt-welding, whose wall thicknesses are the same as those of the pipes they are welded to; however they only permit a lower internal pressure.

The basis for the calculation is TRD 301.

The respective utilization rate for some of the specifi ed wall thicknesses is defi ned in Tables 1 and 2.

DIN 2605-2, DIN 2615-2, DIN 2616-2, DIN 2617

Full pressure factorThe respective DIN standards apply to steel fi ttings for butt-welding which are able to resist the same internal pressure as the pipe they are welded to.

The basis for the calculation is TRD 301.

The respective increased wall thickness for some of the specifi ed wall thicknesses on the fi tting body is listed in Tables 1 and 2.

The manufacturing process and the assigned product forms of the starting material are listed in Section 8.2.1 and Table 1. Special manufacturing processes and starting materials can be ordered with Options 2 and 3 (Section -2) and Options 1 and 2 (Section -4).

EN 10253-2/-4

A special heat treatment can be agreed upon with Option 5.

EN 10253-4 The provisions regarding the heat treatment of the fi ttings are made in Section 8.2.3: hot formed fi ttings must be solution annealed after the reforming process. If specifi c conditions are met cold formed fi ttings do not require heat treatment after the reforming process. There are no temperature recommenda-tions for heat treatment.

A heat treatment can be demanded with Option 3.
