Objective

For students to learn, understand, and apply the concept of greater than, less than, or equal to by accurately using the symbols and concept in numerical sentences and other contexts in addition to making real world connections.

Meet Cody

Cody the Crocodile lives in a swamp with big fish and little fish. He is a very hungry crocodile that has a big mouth so he can eat big fish. Help him to fill up on lunch by eating as many big fish as he can. So put your waders on, we are wading in!

Cody wants to always eat the largest fish around. When his mouth is open and pointing to the largest fish, it looks just like the greater than symbol.

When reading a problem, it is just like reading a book. Read the problem from left to right so the symbols make sense.Use a < sign to say less than.Use a > sign to say greater than.Use an = sign to say equal to.

Example: 16 > 9

In my head I read it as “sixteen is greater than nine.”

Notice in the examples that the mouth of the symbol is always facing the largest number.

Since we must always read left to right, sometimes the less than symbol is used ( < ). Notice that Cody’s mouth is always ready to eat the largest number, yummy!
