    Lets talk about

    comparative degree

    using the words

    endinginerfirst!

    When do we use the

    comparative degree

    with words ending in

    When we compare TWO persons,

    places,or things, we use simple

    describing words called adjectives which

    end in -er,together with the word

    than.

    The rule looks like this!

    1.)Jane is shorter than Judy.2.)Kelly is fatter than her brother.3.)The marble is smaller than the

    soccer ball.

    4.)Andrews work is neater thanRaymunds.

    5.)The ruler is longer than thepencil.

    6.)The storybook is thinner thanthe dictionary.

    7.)The mountain is bigger than thehill.

    use the superlative degree with

    words ending inest?

    Yes!

    Definitely!

    We use simple describing words

    called adjectiveswhich end with

    -est when we compare one or

    more personswith all other

    people in a group. For example,

    the brightestchildren in the

    school; or one or more places

    with all other places, for example,

    the richest countryin the world;

    or one or more things with all

    other things of the same kind, for

    example, the cheapest

    vegetables in the market.

    Adjectives which end with -est

    are called superlatives.

    AS!

    Do you know when to use AS?

    Rule No. 1! We use as +

    adjective + as (e.g. as old

    as)to say that twothings or

    people are the same is

    some way. It looks like this.

    Note that we say as me / as him / as

    her/ as us / as them, and not as I /

    as he / as she etc:

    1.)The two star hotel isnt as big as the four star hotel.2.)Im not as clever as her. (She is cleverer than me)

    Jean cooks as well as Tom.

    (= Jean and Tom are both good cooks.)

    He couldnt run as quickly as Maria.

    (= Maria ran more quickly than him.)

    Rule No. 2! When use not as asto talk

    about a difference between two things

    or people. Here are the examples!

    Rule Number 3!We can also use as +

    adverb + as (e.g. as well as). Here is

    how you do it!

    Jane has got as many friends as Mary.

    I dont have as many books as you.

    Helen earns as much money as Colin.

    Jack doesnt do as much work as me.

    They arent carrying as much luggage as us.

    Rule Number 4!We use as

    many + plural noun + as (e.g.

    as many friends as)to say that

    the number of two thing same

    are equal. It looks like this!

    We use not as many. asto

    say two things are not equal.

    Heres the rule number 5! We use as much + uncountable

    noun + as (e.g. as much as money as)to compare two

    things.Uncountable nounsare words for things that we

    cannot count, and so they do not have a plural form (money,

    work, luggage, traffic). Here is the application of this rule!
