Electro-hydraulic direct drives

The drive consists of a power unit with a standard AC-induction electric motor run-ning at fixed speed driving a variable displacement hydraulic pump together with ahigh torque low speed hydraulic motor. (Fig 1).

The hydraulic motor is mounted directly to the driven shaft with a mechanicalcoupling or by splines. No gear reducer, belts, chain or sprockets are required. Thespeed of the driven shaft is determined by the variable flow from the hydraulicpump. The electro-hydraulic drive can operate continuously throughout the entirepower range up to approximately 200% of the rated torque from zero to full speed(Fig.2). The rated torque determines the size of hydraulic motor selected.

The drive can operate intermittently above the installed power rating, with the samelimitations as any fixed speed electric motor with the equivalent service factor. Thisdrive solution has a distinct advantage during lengthy acceleration cycles or duringoverload conditions. Loads that exceed the maximum torque requirement are effec-tively avoided by a pre-set pressure limiting function, which destrokes the pump.

The machine is also well protected from shock loads due to the low kinetic energyof the low speed motor. Because of this low moment of inertia, unlimited starts andstops are accepted without any restrictions. The standard drive can operate in bothdriving and braking mode, forward and reverse (4-quadrant drive) without any addi-tional or special accessories.

Electro-mechanical variable frequency AC drives

A variable frequency alternating current (VFAC) drive, consists of a frequency con-verter, an electric AC induction motor and a high speed coupling. For a low speedhigh torque drive a gear reducer together with a low speed coupling will have to beadded. (Fig 3).

The speed of the standard induction motor is controlled by regulating the fre-quency of the supply voltage. (Fig 4).

The controllable frequency range for heavy duty drives is considered to be from 0 to100 Hz. When running at 50 Hz the VFAC drive can operate continuously at 100 %of the electrical motor rated torque. At lower frequency/speed the continuous outputtorque is reduced (fig.4). At zero speed the max torque is limited to approximately60 % of rated torque for a self-ventilated induction motor.

The VFAC drive can intermittently operate above 100 % of rated torque, i.e up to150 % during 1 minute every 10 minutes. The starting torque can intermittently fora period of a few seconds only be in the 180-200 % range.

A VFAC drive selection must be based on its continuous torque capacity over theentire speed range. This is a most important consideration due to its limitations, especially at lower speeds, leading to oversizing.

Electro-mechanical DC drives

A direct current (DC) drive consists of an AC/DC converter, a DC electric motorand a high speed drive coupling. For a low speed high torque drive a gear reducertogether with a low speed drive coupling must be added. (Fig 5).

A DC-motor can operate continuously at constant torque up to 100% rated speed.Speeds above rated can also be obtained through field weakening, but the motor isnow limited to operate at constant power, see fig 6.

A DC-motor can operate intermittently above these limitations, but only with timerestrictions due to internal overheating of the windings. The shaft driven fan isinsufficient to control the temperature at lower speeds and usually forced cooling isincluded to improve lower speed performance.

A DC-motor is sensitive to harsh environments. In many applications an encloseddesign is necessary and forced cooling with filtered air becomes necessary.Conductive carbon dust is still generated internally from the brushes and the drivemust be stopped for cleaning on a regular basis.

COMPARISON OF VARIABLE LOW SPEED - HIGH TORQUE DRIVES

Gear reducers

Common to both VFAC and DC drives is the use of gear reducers to develop hightorque at low speed. The selected size of the gear reducer depends on the type ofapplication, prime mover, output torque, speed and required service life.

For continuous heavy-duty applications the reducer is normally oversized by afactor of 1.5-3.0. In very tough shock-load applications the factor can be evenhigher. The losses in a gear reducer depend mainly on the type of reducer and num-ber of reduction stages.

A standard helical or planetary gear reducer will have losses between 1-2 % perstage. For a 3-stage reducer the overall efficiency will be in the area of 95-97 % atrated output load. The losses in the reducer are not so much affected by the loadwhich means that the efficiency drops with output loads lower than rated (sizingfactor >1).

A gear reducer is normally selected with a higher rated output capacity than theaverage running condition, which means that the reducer will always be oversized. That will increase the weight and cost of the reducer and also reduce the overallefficiency.

Hägglunds Drives hydraulic motors are world-famousfor their reliability and performance. They provide thedriving force needed but they are only a part of thesystem.

If the drive is to function in an optimal way, thereliability and performance of the pump unit must besimilar to that of the hydraulic motor.

In the past we found when power units were suppliedby others that they did not match the requirementsneeded, for understandable reasons. So, to ensure thequality and realiability we developed our standardpower unit range, designed to match our motors inquality and performance.

Electric motor, pumps, oil tank, valves, and otherperipheral equipment, gathered together into one unit.Together with the hydraulic motor and a control unit, they form a complete drive system.

Today we have three types of power units. Theintegral type, with all the components fitted into acabinet.

Two types of open units, the HPU which is anhorizontal type using a closed loop system. TheLPPU is a low power power unit, up to 45 kW, usingan open loop system.

The advantages of the integral pump unit are the lownoise level, at the same time as all the parts areprotected against dirt, dust and water/moisture. Itrequires only a small space, can be positioned directlyadjacent to the hydraulic motor, and is very easy toinstall and maintain.

Irrespective of which variant is selected, the powerunit supplied is built to function properly with ourmotors. The whole system comes from one supplierwith the same high quality throughout the entire drivesystem.

Reliable and with good performance

Page 6: Comparison of variable low speed - high torque driveskdhyd.com/pdf/pro/HAGGLUND/UNIT.pdf · Comparison of variable low speed ... The drive consists of a power unit with a standard

Acomplete hydraulic drive system fromHägglunds Drives comprises a control sys-tem,electric motor, oil tank, pump andhydraulic motor. In most systems, the con-

trol system, electric motor, oil tank and pump are alllocated in a sound insulated cabinet.

The pump is driven by an electric motor that runs atfixed speed. The oil flow from the pump is controlledby the swash-plate angle, which can be changed by asignal from the control system.

The pump and hydraulic motor are connectedtogether by flexible hoses and/or by steel pipes. Theoil f lows from the pump to the motor in one of thehoses/steel pipes. The oil flows into the motor cylin-ders and presses the pistons radially out towards thecam ring. The cam ring is designed in such a way thatthe motor axle rotates and drives the shaft of themachine. The speed of the motor is controlled by theflow of oil into the motor.

An increase in the oil flow means a higher motorspeed and vice versa. The direction of rotation of themotor changes when the pump transfers the oil pres-sure to the other hydraulic hose/steel pipe to themotor. Both the hydraulic motor and the pump have avery low moment of inertia, which makes it possibleto stop or reverse direction quickly.

The second hydraulic hose/steel pipe is used as areturn line for the oil to the pump. A part of the returnflow is bled off into the tank where it is cooled andfiltered.

There is a third hose/steel pipe that returns drain oilfrom the motor to the tank.

This is how it works

Main components intwo door Power Unit

1. The free standing cabinet is built of a robust steelframework with sound insulated doors, panels andcover. It is surface treated to prevent corrosion andageing in tough process industry environments. Thesolution is an open one which simplifies accessibil-ity during maintenance and service.

2. The electric motor that we normally use has a highefficiency and is also extremely reliable. It is started at no load and runs at fixed speed.

3. The hydraulic pump is of the variable displacementaxial piston type with very fast acting pressurecompensator override. All controlling items are built on to keep pipeworkto an absolute minimum and electro-hydraulic stro-ker provides flow control by controlling pump dis-placement.

4. The tank is manufactured of stainless steel to pre-vent corrosion.

5. The oil filters are dimensioned for oils with highviscosity and a high degree of contaminationseparation. Duplex filters can be supplied as anoption, allowing you to replace filters duringoperation.

6. The oil cooler is dimensioned to maintain the oiltemperature in the hydraulic system at the correctlevel. In this way good lubrication characteristicsare ensured and the service life of the oil and of

the complete drive system will be long.

7. The control system is configurable for differenttypes applications, providing consistent start, stopsequences. The operation can be controlled byexternal signals or from the front panel of thecontrol system. Various operational parameters canbe displayed such as rpm, pressure, electric motorpower and self-diagnostics.

Adapt your Power Unitdepending on the powerrequired by your system

A system of few components, but many combi-nations to provide any solution for the Hägglu-nds Drives performance range.

The Hägglunds Drives motors performancerange, demand, power and flow from singlepump systems with low flow to multi pump sys-tems with very high flow and power. Our powerunits are designed to suit all these demands withdifferent style and almost any combination ofpump/electric motor size. Our systems are userfriendly and can be adjusted or controlled tochange pressure and flow and therefore drivetorque, drive speed and hence drive power. It isquite easy to adjust or upgrade to suit changingproduction demands.

The controllability of hydraulic drives bringsversatility to machines which transform themfrom the slave of an operator into an intelligentproduction unit which can sense and react to sit-uations to improve production flow. Our drivecontrol Spider provides all the necessarystart/stop logic, system health monitoring andmachine control techniques.

The unit is easy to install,it is fully functiontested before delivery and takes a short time tocommission. Even on large machines installa-tion can be undertaken during a normal shut-down period so no production losses are experi-enced.

If r equired on truly critical applications astandby unit can be included to give security ofservice even after failure of a duty set.

CompactCompact is a line of cam-ring-motors with a rotating hollowshaft. Torque: up to 73 500 Nm.Speed range: up to 280 rpm.The Compact motor is a toughand powerful solution for manyindustrial and marine applica-tions. It is compact, versatileand with unbeatable power toweight ratio.

Power UnitA neat package designed toprovide variable hydraulic oilflow to the motors. Low noiseinsulated weatherproof cabinet, easy maintenance and minimumfloor space required. Manycombinations of power, flowand control available.

Control SystemsSpider is a modern configurablemicro-controller based drivecontrol & monitoring system.

The MCA is an advanced PLCmachine control system.

This is how it worksA complete drive system fromHägglunds comprises the drivemotor with mounting accesso-ries, a control system, a power

unit with electric motor, oiltank, pump, oil conditioningand instrumentation.

The pump is driven by theelectric motor at constant speed. The oil flow to the drive motorfrom the axial piston pump iscontrolled electronically. Takingthe pump swash-plate overcentrechanges the direction of thedrive.

The oil pressure forces thepistons radially outwards againstthe cam ring, creating the torquewhich is proportional to thepressure applied. The motor

cylinder block directly coupledto the shaft rotates the machineand the body is held by a torquearm or bracket.

The speed of the drive isdirectly related to the flow fromthe pump. Therefore, the power, speed and torque are easilycontrolled. This hydraulic closedloop system provides a highlydynamic four quadrant drivewith driving and braking inforward and reverse.

The motor and the pump havea very low moment of inertia, which makes it possible to stopor reverse quickly. The extremelyfast pump pressure controlremoves unwanted transientsof stresses and strains on themachine.

FEEDER DRIVES

Page 20: Comparison of variable low speed - high torque driveskdhyd.com/pdf/pro/HAGGLUND/UNIT.pdf · Comparison of variable low speed ... The drive consists of a power unit with a standard

The Feeder Drives system fromHägglunds Drives consists of ahigh torque hydraulic motor, ahydraulic pump, an oil reservoirand a control system. Flexiblehoses and/or steel pipes connectthe hydraulic motor and thepump to each other. The powerunit, which can be mounted re-motely from the motor, supplieshydraulic oil to the motor asdemanded, by a control signal.

Hydraulic motorsThe hydraulic motor is of theradial piston cam curve designand mounted by virtue of its inte-gral coupling (or optional inter-nal splines) directly on the drivenshaft without coupling arrange-

ments or gearboxes.

A torque arm is utili-sed to counter the

reaction forcewhilst elimina-ting any undesi-rable forceson the mainmotor bea-rings.

Powerunits

The powerunit is a fullyself contained

skid mountedunit. It is an open

loop hydraulic sys-tem designed for con-

tinuous duty industrialdrive applications.

The power unit consists main-ly of an electric motor, a hydrau-

lic pump, an oil reservoir anddirectional control valves. Thehydraulic system is continuallymonitored by virtue of variousswitches in the power unit. These

switches monitor conditions suchas temperature, oil level etc.

Electrical controls

The drive offers the possibility ofeither fixed, trimmable or fullyvariable speed control. Thedifference being by virtue of thetype of directional control valvesutilised in the system.

Drive functionThe power unit´s prime mover isan AC induction motor, whichruns at constant speed driving thehydraulic pump.

The hydraulic motor mounted onthe driven machine shaft turnsonly when the pump/valvereceives the demand signal andflow is generated. There is noneed to start/stop the electricmotor, only to zero the signal tothe pump/valve. This techniqueeliminates high current spikesand utilises AC induction electricmotors very efficiently.

Max output torque (Nm) at max pressure.

Speed (rpm)

Explanation of the diagram

The graphs show output torque and speed at motor shaft for power units with an

installed power of 11 up to 45 kW.

The max torque figure for each motor is valid at a hydraulic pressure of approximately 350 bar.

These maximum torque figures are for intermittent use only and can not

be used for continuous operation.

YOUR OPTIONSTank-sizesPumps

The pumps above are highpressure axial piston pumpswith adjustable displacement, operating on the swash-plateprincipe. They are equippedwith pressure compensators.

A mobile version of vanepump with fixed displacementis also available. It is notequipped with pressure com-pensator.

There are two sizes of tanks avai-lable, 100 litres and 300 litres.

A very simple rule is that thevolume of the tank should be atleast two times the main flow perminute to get low flow speed forthe oil in the tank to avoid air andcontamination within the oil.

The tank is equipped with: ❑ visual level gauge❑ level switch (two levels)❑ temperature switch with

visual indication❑ air breather filter ❑ drain tap❑ filling point with quick

release coupling

Control Systems

The choice of electrical controlsystem depends on the operatio-nal requirements. ❑ speed control required❑ number of electric motors❑ level of health monitoring❑ interfacing with other items❑ accuracy of speed control

There are also several other con-cerns e.g.environment and space.

The levels of control can beenhanced or reduced. HägglundsDrives will make recommenda-tions as to the minimum levelthat should be considered.

It is also possible to use systemsprovided by the customer.

Hägglunds Drives AB, Mellansel, is certified by DNV according to the rules

of SS-EN ISO 9001 since 1992.

Starting torquecapacityThe hydraulic drive has theability to provide full startingtorque without time restrictions. This is an important feature inapplications when the machine isrequired to start up under fullload. The ability of the hydraulicdrive to develop continuous over-load torque without limitationmeans undesirable trip outs areavoided.

Start/stop frequencyThe hydraulic drive canstop/start on unlimited numberof times. The electric motor runs conti-nuously at fixed speed, driving

the pump. The speed and thestarts and stops, are controlled bythe signal to the direction controlvalve without changing the speedof the electrical motor.

Low speed hightorque capacityThe hydraulic drive can operateat maximum torque and zerospeed without time restriction. The hydraulic motor is mounteddirectly onto the feeder drive

shaft, offering a compact driveunit with no alignment problemsand completely maintenancefree. The hydraulic motor can

develop its exceptionally hightorque from zero speed.

Shock loadprotectionThe hydraulic drive isinsensitive for high shock loads.A hydraulic drive without gearreducer has approximately 1/500thof the inertia of an equivalent high-speed drive with gear reducer.

Sudden stalls or overloads areabsorbed by the hydraulic systemas the drives come to an instan-taneous stop, eliminating high

transient stresses and strains onequipment.

ControllabilityThe above features offer theoperator infinite capabilitieswith regards to interfacing thedriven machine control with forexample the plant processcontrol requirements. It is an extremely user friendlysystem.
