Region 9 and 12 met in Georgetown for the 4th quarter board
meeting. This was the 1st combined regional meeting since Texas
split into 2 regions, north and south Texas.
Our IPSSA presi-
dent Marc Cannon,
Amy Nijjar IPSSA
admin and Ray
Arouesty Arrow in-
surance joined the
combined region
meeting.
These meetings are
always very informative, and
it gives everyone a chance to
bring new ideas forward.
Ray gave us a rundown on
why we all need to have li-
ability insurance to protect
ourselves. It just makes
sense.
All in all great meeting.

“What were they Thinking?” We have all run into those situations that are just so outrageous, funny or just plain stupid that they warrant a photo - it doesn’t just have to do with all the “creative” plumbing or equipment layouts we have seen. HORROR FILE OF THE MONTH
Page 5
Red touch yellow “dangerous fellow”, red touch black
“friendly jack”. A little rime to remember when you come
across a coral snake.
Unlike other venomous snakes, the coral snake has round
pupils, a blunt head, and no heat sensing pits. Its venom
sacks are not attached to the fangs but are adjacent to the
teeth, permeating the puncture holes as the snake latches
onto a victim. Contrary to common belief, the maximum
amount of venom can be delivered without chewing; the
venom delivery is related to the duration of time the snake
is attached, not how many times it bites its prey. Multiple
bites do facilitate quicker venom transfer, but do not nec-
essarily affect the quantity.
Coral snake venom is neurotoxic, another fact which dis-
tinguishes it from other North American poisonous
snakes. Neurotoxic venom affects the way the brain com-
municates with muscles, slurring speech, affecting move-
ment, and ultimately ceasing cardiac or respiratory func-
tion. A bite from a coral snake can go without symptoms
for as long as twelve hours. Coral snakes are shy and
rarely spotted.

addition to many Region 12 IPSSA members, there were several pro-
spective members as well as other area pool industry professionals in

given out throughout
the event. The atten-
dees were able to
spend valuable time
directly with the ven-
dors they may only see
at our meetings once or
twice a year and learn
about their products up
close and personal.
The new location was a hit, as it was more centrally located allowing
more access to all north Texas pool professionals. Region 12 would
like to thank the manufacturers and distributors along with the other
factory representatives that participated, without you the event would
not be possible. Many thanks also goes to the volunteers from several
of the Region 12 Chapters who showed up to help, as well as the table-
top committee. Plans are already in the works for next years 4th Annual
Tabletop! See ya There!!

FORT WORTH MEETING
Page 13
Battlefield Promotion – It was February of 2003 and I had been se-
lected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, in the U. S. Army. The
one really long pole in the tent was that we were preparing to go to
war and our unit was selected to be a part of the initial push into Iraq.
All favorable personal actions were put on hold, this included promo-
tions. The Army figured we would be in combat operations for a short
period of time and everyone would be back in the states within at
least six (6) months and favorable personal actions could be con-
ducted at that time. Well now, we all know how that worked out.
They were right about one thing, Combat Operations in their words
lasted only two (2) short months. After which we transitioned into
“Stabilization Operations” and all discussion of us going home early,
ended. We were informed that we had to keep Boots On the Ground
(BOG) for at least a year but that the moratorium on favorable per-
sonal actions had been lifted. There was one rather large challenge
with the U. S. Government declaring that Combat Operations had
officially ended in Iraq. The challenge being that it seems no one
bothered to inform the insurgents of this very important transition in
our operations. We continued to be attacked almost nightly with mor-
tar, machinegun and small arms fire on our Forward Operating Base
(FOB). At times the insurgents were in brazened enough to even
attack us in broad daylight.
With the moratorium being lifted my promotion orders were posted in
July of 2003. Now information flow become a challenge. At that time
mail / correspondence or should I say “Snail Mail” was moving at,
well, a snail’s pace. It was taking on the average 2 – 3 months for
correspondence to catch up with us. I finally received my promotion
orders in September of 2003. Now y’all need to keep in mind that
Combat Operations had “Officially” ended on May 1st of 2003. With
orders in hand we could now officially conduct a “Battlefield Promo-
tion”.
Our Command decided to conduct the ceremony on the roof top patio
TALKING STORY With Jim Stearns A.K.A. The Pool Sheik
of a two story concrete building that was behind our head-
quarters and along our FOB’s perimeter fence. Most struc-
tures in the Middle East are constructed of a concrete prod-
uct. Most have a patio for a roof along with a 3 - 4 foot high
palisade that runs the entire perimeter of the roof. The main
reason this location was chosen was for its commanding
view of downtown Bagdad, the perfect backdrop for our
ceremony. Not the most beautiful sight in the world but a
far sight better than a commanding view of a desert. Also
keep in mind that each and every attendee to this ceremony
would, without fail, be armed with their weapon(s) of choice.
In attendance we had Soldiers with M-16 carbines, M-4
carbines (Newer / Smaller version of the M-16), M-203 gre-
nade launchers (M-16 with a grenade launcher attached)
and M-9 pistols (9mm pistols). It just might have invoked
images of a backwoods family get together.
Let the ceremony commence. The Soldiers were put into a
formation, the colors were posted, our National Anthem was
played and the awardee was ordered to “Post”. I marched
up to the Presiding Officer saluted and they began to read
the promotion orders. As if on cue a small arms firefight
erupted just on the other side of the FOB’s perimeter fence
below us, that grew in intensity within a very short period of
time. Without missing a beat three (3) things occurred si-
multaneously. First, everyone in attendance took a knee.
Taking advantage of the protection that the palisade of-
fered. Second, thru a crescendo of metal on metal clicks
everyone brought their weapon to a ready status. Maga-
zines locked and rounds chambered, weapons still on safe.
And third, the Presiding Officer stated matter of factly
“nothing to be alarmed about, it is just the locale’s offering
their “Celebratory Fire” in honor of Colonel Stearns’ promo-
tion”. His quick thinking really helped in reducing that initial
pucker factor that flashed thru everyone’s mind of whether
they should fight or flight. He instructed them to continue
reading the orders so we could finish the ceremony as
quickly as possible. They finished reading the orders, cut
my old rank off with a K-Bar knife, pinned my new rank on
my uniform and cover (hat). The firefight continued along
with our growing pucker factor. Just as the Presiding Offi-
cer ordered that the colors be retired four (4) Apache heli-
copter gun ships come screaming in over our heads. Firing
their rockets and miniguns, adding to the intensity of the
growing firefight below. Once again the Presiding Officer
matter of factly states “Colonel Stearns this is your official
“Fly Over” in honor of your promotion today. Now lets get
off this roof and take cover.”
Of course this ended up being my most memorable promo-
tion during my entire Military career.
THAT IS ALL!!!
Jim
