Complete CADCAM Solutions

Innovation and achievementDelcam is a world-leading developer and supplier of advanced CADCAM software, with more than 35,000 customers in over 80 countries. These clients vary from global names like Nike, Boeing and Mattel to small start-ups and individual craftsmen.

Founded 30 years ago, we are the largest developer of product development software in the UK, with subsidiaries in Europe, America and Asia. Our global success has been recognised with many awards, including six Queen’s Awards for Enterprise with two in the last five years in the categories of International Trade and Innovation.

Since the company’s formation, there has been a high commitment to research and development, amounting annually to more than 25% of sales, and many patented inventions.

Identifying and targeting new market opportunities has led to the continuous development and introduction of highly innovative products, which significantly enhance manufacturing capabilities in a wide range of industries. These include automotive producers, aerospace manufacturers, jewellers, electronic packaging and footwear companies, mouldmakers and education.

What is CADCAM?Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacture (CADCAM) is the phrase that is often used to describe Delcam’s core business. Essentially Delcam provides the computer software tools to design complex 3D shapes and then drive computer-controlled machine tools to cut the shapes accurately from any number of materials from hard steel to soft foam or wood. However, in recent years the company has expanded its remit considerably to provide computer software tools that now encompass the entire manufacturing cycle in a modern industrial production environment.

These include project management and collaboration tools, rapid prototype or rapid manufacturing technologies (that build the shapes up rather than cutting them out) and even specialist medical applications using data from the latest non-invasive imaging systems.

The ProductsEach product can be used independently to solve a specific customer’s problem, providing the perfect point solution, for example, adding programming for high speed machining or extending an existing CAD capability to support more complex 3D shapes. Offering a full suite of products enables Delcam to combine any number of individual elements to provide an integrated package to meet a customer’s needs. Tailoring solutions in this way ensures that Delcam can match a company’s needs today, but also grow to match their needs tomorrow.

Not all of Delcam customers are large. The software has also been supplied to many independent designers, toolmakers and moulders. Special efforts are made to develop systems for these smaller companies and so give powerful solutions to their manufacturing problems at a realistic price.

Graduate & Placement ProgrammeOur graduate and placement programmes run side by side at Delcam to ensure that all new starters get the training and support they need at the start of their careers.

We start by providing intensive training; for developers that will be in Delcam’s primary programming language, C++, and for engineers and marketers it will be in Delcam extensive range of CADCAM products.

Following the initial training courses you will begin a series of rotations around the different teams at Delcam. Developers will gain experience in working in up to five different development teams, growing your knowledge and expertise by working alongside experienced Delcam software engineers across our broad range of CADCAM products.

Engineers and marketers will get the opportunity to rotate around the different departments at Delcam covering Training, Support, Professional Services, and Product Marketing. Again maximising the range of skills you will learn during your time with us.

One year placements at Delcam work in exactly the same way, as for us it’s just the first step in what we hope will become a future career at Delcam. Even our summer internships go through the same training and although there is only time for one rotation we often offer undergraduates the opportunity to return the follow year to continue their development at Delcam.

For those graduates wishing to work towards professional registration we provide support for Chartered registration with both the IET and IMechE with the help of existing Delcam Chartered Engineers.

While the majority of our graduate and placement opportunities are based at our Birmingham headquarters, as an international company with offices in over 80 countries opportunities for travel soon arise for those that are interested.

For all disciplines you will get experience of working on real world projects from your very first rotations. Putting it bluntly, at Delcam we’ve got too many exciting new opportunities and projects to have people making the tea!

Delcam Directors

Clive Phillip Martell BSc MSc CEng MIEEChief Executive Officer

Clive Martell joined Delcam in 1982. He was appointed Marketing Director in 1994 and responsible for Delcam’s European Subsidiaries in 2001. Clive became Group Operations Director in April 2008 before becoming Chief Executive in August 2009. Mr Martell is a Chartered Engineer with a Bachelors degree in Production Engineering and a Masters degree in Machine Tool and Manufacturing Technology from the University of Birmingham.

Edward Barrett Lambourne BSc MSc CEng FIETTechnical Director

Edward Lambourne, joined Delta plc in 1973. He was responsible for the initial introduction of CADCAM software into Delta following a two year secondment to Cambridge University to help develop the DUCT CADCAM system, which was the original foundation for Delcam’s products. Mr Lambourne was one of the founders of the business within Delta plc and he was instrumental in the buyout of the company from Delta in 1989. Mr Lambourne is responsible for the Company’s development and IT systems activity, which includes one of the largest mechanical CADCAM development teams in the UK. Mr Lambourne has a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University and a Masters degree from Cambridge University for CADCAM research. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology.

Mr Lambourne commented:

During my two years research project at Cambridge, I was part of the team at the University Engineering Department led by Donald Welbourn that invented the DUCT CAD/CAM system. My Cambridge MSc thesis was on the subject of blending intersecting surfaces, an essential requirement for Delta to be able to model and machine body dies for water taps using CAD/CAM.

After spending two years on secondment in Cambridge, I returned to Delta’s site at Dartmouth Street to join Hugh Humphreys, who specialised in the introduction of new manufacturing methods, in introducing CAD/CAM technology to the Delta Group. We quickly realised that there were big opportunities for DUCT in the mouldmaking industry and with the encouragement of the Delta Group Chairman we were able to start building a team that eventually became Delcam.

Looking back, Delcam is an excellent example of how university research can be spun out to create a new small business that can be grown into a significant global player. It is fitting that the Delta and Cambridge elements are still reflected in the company’s name. Although Hugh and I were privileged to have the opportunity to start this business, it is the team that we have grown here that is the reason for our success.
