The British Christmas TreeGrowers’ Association (BCTGA)says a freshly cut, healthy treeshould last six weeks in a home, ifcared for correctly.

The BCTGA’s Christmas tree ex-pert, Roger Hay, says: “It is es-sential to choose a tree that hasbeen recently cut and still fresh.

“If the needles are bright, that’sa good sign. Avoid trees with dulland dried up ones.

“Shake the tree gently to see ifthe needles start falling off. If so,you need to move on. The treeshould also feel heavy becausethis is a sign it has a high watercontent and is therefore fresh.”

It is important that youbuy from a garden centreor shop that has built up agood reputation over timeand, if you shop around,there are bargains to behad.

The Norwegian Spruceis the most common andcheapest option, theNordmann Fir is next upthe price scale, and theFraser Fir is most expens-ive.

But, when it comes tocost, a spruce is no morelikely to drop its needles –if correctly watered – thanits more expensive rival.

You may prefer to opt foran artificial tree, whichthese days can be quitetasteful – although thebest ones aren’t cheap.

In more recent years ithas been possible to rent a Christ-mas tree for the festive period.Your chosen tree is dug up priorto being delivered at home, com-plete with a sustainable root sys-tem. Then, come January 6, thesupplier returns to pick it up and

it’s replanted and grown on fornext year. It’s not a budget option,but is surprisingly cost-effective,given that it is delivered and col-lected, and you know your treewill go back into the ground foranother 12 months.
